Question on decal softener
Dave Ambrose replied to Helper Monkey's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'll give another vote to Walthers Solvaset. The important thing is to get the decal positioned and tamped down. Then brush with Solvaset, and leave it alone. The decal wrinkles like an elephant. This will frighten neophytes and small children. But, left undisturbed overnight will be snuggled down to any details present. While it contains acetic acid, it also contains another solvent. Works better than either Microsol or Microset. -
We had a pretty regular group in there for a while, then we had to shut it off due to expense and server load. If you're interested in chatting, just go into the chat room and wait. If you see someone in there, go join them.

Very cute. We have a later Sprite and MG Midget in our driveway.

I like this look.

Good stuff. What motor is that? It looks British, but I can't place it.

Somehow, I would have never conflated "Leave Conversation" with Delete. Thanks for the tip!

The MCM photo crew was there. We should see some pictures in the contest issue.

New Site/Forum Look
Dave Ambrose replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Let's see if this works -- I dragged and dropped the file into the area at the bottom of the editor. That seems to work, and actually work very well. The insert URL just sat there and spun its little working animation. I was using the direct URL from photobucket.. -

If you're having problems with the site, you should try these two things first: Clear your browser cache. This has been fixing some of the weird problems. Also, as we fix stuff with the theme, the cache may go out of date, but not update on your computer or device.Ensure that cookies are enabled for this site. They use them to maintain your login info, among other things. -
What's your next model purchase?
Dave Ambrose replied to JollySipper's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Unless something else pops up that I just gotta get, I'm getting the new Proteus submarine from Fantastic Voyage. -
Looks like the preview button is gone, and there's no setting to bring it back. If you mess up a post, you can just click edit at the bottom, and fix it.

One thing with pictures -- make sure there are no spaces in the file names. The error checking code gets confused. Accounts are determined to be unique if they have different email addresses, not IP addresses. If you inadvertently created two accounts, let me know and I'll fuse them together.

Why is it.........................??

I understand your frustrations. It took me a while to get used to the new site. If you think things have changed here, you should see the admin pages. We upgrade for two reasons, useful functionality, and most importantly, security. Do you all remember when we got hacked? We were off the air for something like 5 days. The root cause was some software that hadn't been updated. Hackers got into our server, and started serving up malware. It took a lot of late nights to clean up after that. If you're in the web site business, you know that your site is under attack virtually all the time. Security is important. Sometimes, our upgrades include/require a new default theme. That was the case here. In exchange for having to learn a new layout, you get better rendering on tablets and phones. These, days, that's important. Ultimately, we'll reach a wider audience. Whether that turns into more new or returning builders will depend on how well we treat the noobies. The picture upload facilities have improved. I haven't tried them yet, but they look a lot easier to use. Drag and drop beats using Photobucket. Notifications should be working now. If they aren't for you, please PM me. -
All Gregg on this one. Yes, we do. Please, please, please, keep it civil. We had problems with people getting into flamewars on the last one. If you find yourself getting angry, just leave. I will be keeping an eye on it, and will ban recalcitrant people from the chat room.

The problem's at our end. We're working on it.

Len, I'm right below you. Believe me, I feel your pain. Our problem is that some providers demand that the return address for the email be the same as the domain for the outgoing mail server. Our outgoing server belongs to our hosting company, not us. They did this in an effort to block spam. Unfortunately, it also blocks a lot of useful content. So far, my rogues gallery includes AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, and (I think) GMail. Unfortunately, getting this fixed isn't simple, but we're working on it. Thanks, Dave Ambrose Update: You turn your back and boom, something different is broken. I'll look into it.

please stop it !

The problem is internal stress in the plastic from the molding process. Best thing to do is to liberally paint the topside of the groove with solvent glue, then let it dry. The plastic will then bulge where it's stressed and you can sand it flat. This process also works for when you shave door handles, emblems, and the like. -
What did you see on the road today?
Dave Ambrose replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My son and I were coming back home from lunch when we saw an early '60s Jaguar sedan on the road, and a '34 Chevy on an auto transporter on the same road within 2 minutes of each other. We decided today was cool car Friday. -

You know, I'd settle for either one. -
This may be a bit far afield, but there's also the San Diego Model Car Club. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park.
