  1. Cool picture Andy, it would make a great diorama. John Strick
  2. Saturday, for all the above mentioned reasons. John Strick
  3. Art, Thanks for the history, VERY interesting stuff !! John
  4. My 10 speed is a 1978 Schwinn Superior that I bought new. Still ride it regularly, I have it torn apart right now to repack bearings & such. Last year I purchased a 1960 Schwinn Tiger middle weight cruiser. I overhauled it mechanically but left the 50 year old patina. It is a blast to ride but not on to long a trip. What makes it really cool is it has a late 60's Bendix 2-speed axle. John Strick
  5. Tom, Thanks for posting those pics. I wasn't able to get there this year, even though I only live a couple miles from the IX center. John
  6. Andy, Any vehicle you build will be ok. John Strick
  7. Very nice Tim, your builds seem to always have the right look. John Strick
  8. My votes are the Pyro Lincoln, Cord ,& Auburn. All hard to build, very poor tool work, the bodies were lumpy. But with a LOT of work can be made presentable. The IMC 48 Fords, Cougar II, & Mustang II. They were almost impossible to build. I finished the Cougar many years ago & couldn't stand to show it to anyone. Another I found very hard to build was the AMT Mercedes Gullwing. Just badly engineered. John Strick
  9. Wow Tim thanks for the kind words. I didn't know if anyone else remembered all that. I first met Bob Bost ( one of the originals ) in Nov.-Dec. 1980 when he was organizing a model club here in the Cleveland area. That winter he kept telling us about this group of great modelers that had met & just talked about model cars. That next June (1981 ) he invited me, Glenn, & Bob to our first NNL, held in Cleveland the same weekend as the Hot Rod Nationals. There I met you, Chuck Helppe, Tom Woodruff, & Tom Dillion. Having spent the late 70's building in solitude, then getting a magazine & meeting all these other adult modelers within a couple years. It was quite a rush. That Oct. about 20 of us met in a room at the Toledo Turnpike Motel ( interestingly now the location of a Toys-R-Us ) & the rest as they say is history. The idea of a non-competitive event obviously struck a chord & spread very rapidly. Literally all over the world. While I believe that judged contests are & always will be important, there is something about just displaying & talking about models that is very positive. What was a bit of a radical idea 30 years ago is now the norm. John Strick
  10. The first of what was to become the NNL took place in Tom Woodruff's garage in June 1980. It was a group of friends that had known each other from the old MPC model contests in the 70's. Since most lived within a couple hour drive from Toledo and usually went to the toy show anyway it was decided to meet again there and the NNL Nationals was born. There has been a meeting at the toy show every October since with anywhere from 20 to 400 + in attendance. The most recent was just this last Satruday Oct. 3rd and we have plans already in place to meet again next year. John Strick
  11. Mark's explanation is pretty close, The Name is Nameless National Luminaries not National Nameless. Also the event in Tom Woodruff's garage was not in response to the article in Scale Auto but just happened to take place (June 1980) just after that issue of SAE was out. Of course the guys in attendance had a bit of fun with his outburst and the name and event was born. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made it to the Toledo NNL Nationals this past Saturday. The new location worked out well and I think a good time was had by all. We are set for next year at the same place and date October 2nd, 2010. Theme will be Bikes, Trikes, & Motorcycles. John Strick Cleveland Automotive Modelers
  12. Check out Modelhaus John Strick
  13. Yes the NNL is on Saturday the 3rd, 2-8 pm. The toy show is Sat. & Sun. John Strick
  14. Admission to the NNL is $10, to the toy show I think it is $12 good for both days. Remember the toy show and the NNL are two totally separate events, we pay John Carlisle the toy show promoter rent for the NNL space. I know this bugs some people paying two admissions, because most shows the same people run the model show and the vender area, we are one of the few if not the only one that is separate. Sorry I know this hurts some folks in the wallet, but that's the way it is. John Strick Cleveland Automotive Modelers
  15. Tom, Thanks for posting this info. John strick
  16. Thanks again Art, those old B&W photos had me wondering, as the car did LOOK too dark to have been the yellow it is now. So with that cleared up we can ether use those plans to scratch build one or wait for Lance Sellers kit. As I've got several projects in process it will be a while before I get to it anyway. John Strick
  17. Art, Thanks very much I had wondered for years about the color of that car. I have seen conflicting reports over the years whether it was originally orange or the current yellow. John Strick
  18. For others interested it was in the June 1965 issue of Rod & Custom. Joe Henning used a MPC 1928 Lincoln as a starting point. Possibly also of interest is that Lance Sellers is working on a master for the 1911 Marmon, there is a picture of it on the Garage Area/ cars under construction page on his web site. There is no timetable for its completion. John Strick www.lsresincars.com
  19. That's cool, I am not on the forums much and did not realize some are just here to cause grief. After thinking about it I can see how you could have doubts. This forum can be such a positive thing. So anyhow I am going to stop talking and go build something!
  20. Lyle, Thanks for the kind words. Sorry I probably went a bit over the top with my response, I was just taken aback having my honesty questioned. Tom, thanks for posting the new toy show flyer, my scanner does not work so I have to rely on others to do that kind of thing. We are working closely with Toy Show promoter John Carlisle to make the change as smooth as possible, we hope to see All of you there!! John Strick
  21. I would NEVER have thought anyone would doubt my post on the NNL & Toledo toy show was legitimate. I realize it was my first post, I joined just to get that important info out as early as possible. I also put the same message on the other magazine's forum. Further I sent emails to both magazine editor's hoping they mention it on their editorial page. As soon as we have our flyers done we will circulate them as widely as possible. I probably should have included a link to the Oldtoyland shows web site, but as I said I would not have in a million years thought anybody would question it. My real concern is what kind of people are using this forum that others would question the legitimacy of someone else's post ? As a guy that has been involved in organizing the Toledo NNL since about 1982 I'm not sure whether I am hurt or angry over the above comments. If you still don't believe me and show up at the Lucas County Rec. Center on OCT. 10--- we won't be there. John Strick, Cleveland Automotive Modelers Society
  22. Because of contract problems with the Lucas County Rec Center the NNL Nationals and the Old Toyland Toledo Toy Show will be changing date and location starting with the October 2009 shows. The new date and location is October 3&4 for the toy show and October 3 for the NNL. location will be the Sylvania Exhibition Center at Tam-O-Shanter. 7060 Sylvania Ave. Sylvania, OH. 43560. This is about 10 miles northwest of the old location. Please mark your calendars for this earlier date, we would hate for anyone to show up a week late for these shows. We hope to see everyone there.
