Why do you build model cars?
jas1957 replied to nboldman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Been building for 40 plus years & I don't know how to do anything else. As everyone else here I'm a car nut, & find great satisfaction in a model well built. -
Bought about a dozen, completed 2. Started a couple others. Good year because that's less than I've bought in the past & more that I normally build.

Only 22 hours left & no one has bid, what gives ?
-
Rare it may be but I'm not too sure any old kit is worth that !

Thanks for clearing that up Art, I knew it was the early '90s but not exactly when. I hate to use Mike's death as a commercial but it is a very strong reminder that if you see something from the after market that you want. Get it you never know when or why it won't be available. After many years regretting not buying Mike's '51 Studebaker conv. when he was alive I found one at Toledo a couple years ago.

Yes it was about 1990 that Mike cast the 1911 Chevy. He did two versions, a complete stock kit & street rod without the wheels & such. Mike was a good guy unfortunately he died I think within a few months of producing it. I know of one person that has one of those & have heard of another that supposedly has one. I have asked the one person about getting it cast. So far no word, I would LOVE to have one & imagine many others would also. Especially with the NNL Nationals theme being 100 years of Chevy next year.

I had the same problem, posting the info for the Toledo NNL. I had to reset the date.

The motion sensor is probably to sensitive, some used to be adjustable. Don't know if that's still the case. Years ago didn't like a certain co- worker, I would go out to the lot, bump against his car & set the alarm off. Can't do that today, too many cameras everywhere.

How angry do you get?
jas1957 replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As a couple others here have said, if a build is going that bad I just walk away. Sometimes for an hour, sometimes a week. I have found that works wonders, I am able to come back with a fresh prospective & attitude. If a simple out of the box build takes 6 months so what, I find in the long run the results are worth it. -
If it's the Premier/Palmer kit I have both the hardtop & convert kits. PM me with your address & I'll dig 'em out & photocopy the instructions. Art you are of course correct, all the Larks no matter who built them were super simple kits. You hardly need the instructions to build them. John Strick

Issue #159 just hit my mail box
jas1957 replied to Jairus's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Jairus, thanks for the story on Z-ing a frame. I am working on a fenderless 36 Ford & have been trying to figure how to get it lower. Your how- to explains it all. I knew about Z- ing the rear but had never heard of doing it on the front. Thanks. John Strick -
Not all of the transmissions from back then were aluminum. Many of the early automatics had cast iron cases, manuals also. Talk about bears to get in & out, those things weighed a ton !!

Thanks Tim for those pics, a whole bunch of building ideas there. I remember reading about that Hudson dealership years ago in I think Autoweek. I wondered if it was still there. -
Best place to buy kits?
jas1957 replied to Pastor Plastic's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hobby Castle on Cleveland's west side & Wings in Lakewood OH. Also at the Toledo & Cleveland toy shows. Bought several kits at the Buckeye Scale Auto club show in Columbus a few weeks ago. Once in a while on ebay. -

Sad News - George Toteff passed away
jas1957 replied to Danno's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Amen to all the above comments, our hobby exists because of Mr. Toteff. There is a very nice obituary posted on the Round 2 web site. John Strick -
Synchronizing 2 motorcycle engines side by side
jas1957 replied to LDO's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I know somewhere I read about running 2 engines side by side. They had one engine turning the opposite way ( reverse cam & oil pump ). Used some kind of gear setup at the back that linked them & then into the same trans. I don't know if it worked well or not but bet it was wild to hear & watch. -

The Most Dangerous Car You've Ever Owned
jas1957 replied to David G.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Owned a 69 Malibu around 81-82. 350,4 barrel, auto, 3500 pounds, 9" drum brakes. That thing just did not want to stop. COMPLETELY rebuilt the brakes a couple times using first line parts, nothing. Just to much car for the stopping power available. Looking back I can't imagine that Chevy put that thing on the road, truly scary. Of course I was only 24-25 at the time, too dumb to really know the danger. John Strick -
I met Pam 20 years ago this week, married 18 years next April. We have a 15 year old honor student in high school & they are both cool with my modeling! Life is good.

Awful kit, great job. We need details as to what you did.

Lyle thanks for the kind words, after reading another thread about the NNL it is nice to hear. Super pictures !
