31 Nash: way beyond "Rat Fiink" Coupe: new project 5/9/13
Alyn replied to John Teresi's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I know I'm gonna love your airbrush work John, but it will have to play second fiddle to the interior. The upholstery just turned out fantastic. It's fancy, yet basic at the same time. Great work capturing the look of the 1:1. -
Thanks, Riley. Bill Davis showed how good the silver and blue go together, so I wanted to try that combo.

I never fail to enjoy the Heartland. Way too much eye candy. Having Clay Kemp enter this year was a true honor. I have always marveled at his work on-line. To see it in person is beyond description. Thanks to Bill Davis for rounding up the 1:1 37 Chevy gasser. That thing was nostalgia all the way. On Sunday afternoon, he fired it up and the smell of race gas floated in the air like the worlds best cologne. They really do need to bottle that smell. I swore I didn't need to pick up any more kits, but there's so much at the Heartland that you're bound to run across something that lures you in. I came across a double Corvette kit with another C4 to replace my promo, and a 53 like my buddy drove back in high school; plus the very cool Revell 50 Olds. Put this one on your calendar next year.

Here's the finished product. Didn't have enough time to do up some full size moon discs, so I had to settle for the kit wheels and tires. Some competition decals would have been a nice addition as well. Maybe next time Since this was just a promo build, it won't be going into the under glass section, so these are the final pics

Thanks, Bill yeah, I expect to be there sometime today and tomorrow. I'm still at work at the moment, but ready to wrap it up for the day. I had some left over Tamiya blue, so I threw that at it as well. Not enough drying time to go with a clear coat on this one, but it looks ok. Here's a few more pics

final update for the night. Got some paint on the body. years ago I painted full size cars. Mostly panel repairs, but a dozen or so completes along the way. I always loved the transformation from primer/sealer to paint. ugly to purdy makes all your sanding, beating and banging, and more sanding worth while.

Thanks again, John. Jason, this will be curbside. I just won't have time to build a motor, plus it would drive me crazy not to detail one. With the hood permanently shut, I can say there's a normally aspirated 580 cube big block under the hood. Hoping to run around 260 MPH or so.

Thanks, John. I think I'm on track. I figured I'd build this one fast, like you but without the detail, or the fantastic air brush work, or the clever designs, or ... Here's the latest batch of progress shots added a tail to the whale got the body work done and in primer. Not super good body work, but good enough for one of the girls John hangs out with. that shnozzola is a bit big, but it's what I had available from the rear The original intent was for a salt flats style Corvette. The air opening is small due to the plentiful ram air effect at Bonneville speeds. The sail panels on the rear balance out the side profile aero to help stability at speed. I probably won't have time to do up some moon discs, so the salt flats look is gonna suffer. Now on to the paint booth ...

The Ohio contingent checks in ... Thanks guys. These promos are quickie builds by there nature, the quickest model I'll every build. This will be curbside, but will show the interior, so I used some .080" styrene rod and put together a simple 5 point roll bar. The interior tub is dove gray and the roll bars are painted Tamiya XF-8 blue. I found a scrap of flat styrene and turned it into a fuel cell. The gas cap is a small section of sprue, rouned off and painted silver. Here's the basic interior. The seat is from the parts box. Dash is painted flat black, then rubbed with oil from my skin to give it a slight sheen. I skimmed over the dash details with a silver pen. now, back to the bench ...

If you're in the Midwest region, you may know that the Heartland Nationals is coming up this weekend in Overland Park, Kansas. Every year we build a couple of dozen promotional models for raffles, auctions and such. Since this year's contest theme is the Chevrolet Corvette, all the promo's will be Corvettes. I'm frantically trying to get mine done in time for the show. Here's what I'm starting with, the AMT 95 Corvette Coupe. I owned a new C4 years ago, but my wife turned it into a Ford Taurus after our daughter was born. I always look back on that car with fond memories. (The Vette, not the Taurus). These clam-shell hoods on the Vette's are very often warped, so I taped this one down and tried to get it reasonably straight. I'm gonna give it a big nose That's the upper half of a pen I had laying around. I cut off the end at an angle and filled that in with scrap plastic, and drilled out a hole for an air intake on the rounded end. yep, I'd say that's a big nose

Chevellicious ! Great color combo with the orange and white. ditto on the interior. The lighter colored panel inserts are a nice touch.
-
Great looking jack, Mark. Looks like you've captured about every detail possible. You ought to enter the jack into a show by itself in the miscellaneous category and see how she does.

31 Nash: way beyond "Rat Fiink" Coupe: new project 5/9/13

Obviously, this car was built to be outlandish, and the high mounted engine is just one aspect of that. As far as whether or not it would work; as long as the pinion angle and the angle of the engine match, it certainly could be made to work. The design goal for a driveline with simple u-joints is not to make sure the engine points to the rear axle, but to keep the pinion and transmission output shaft at close to the same angle. If this is not the case, a constant velocity joint at the transmission output shaft can be used to resolve the issue. Just sayin' ... Looking forward to some of your fabulous airbrush work, John -
Man, I'm all jacked up now ! Great little tidbit to add to this already excellent project.

detail aside, that is some nice use of color -
The Heartland is just around the corner. Don't let this one slip by your contest agenda. Always great models, great friends and great vendors. Hope to see some of you guys at the show.
-
Cool stuff, Pete. I like that you're modeling an open valve train engine. That will add some great detail.

John, my Dad and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting with you guys. My Dad was also at the 2011 banquet and remembered the great successes you had that year. It was really something to see it all repeated this year. I have to wonder if a back to back performance like yours has ever happened in previous years. Congratulations once again. Brian, I haven't seen you around in a while, and thought we might have lost you to some other hobby like gardening, skeet shooting or creating furry puppets. It's good to see you back on the forum. I've always been a fan of your weathering skills. Thanks so much for the generous comments.
