A Dodge & a Nissan? Magnissimo? R34 Magnum? Am I nuts?!
JayVee replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This thing is still crazy, and I still love it. I like that paint scheme a lot. The darker lower section creates a slick visual effect. -
Thanks Mike, brakes and calipers are from the Model Car Garage.

Thanks guys! A Ford Focus kit is providing the seats and center console. Here are the modified pieces before painting and assembly just to show how things are being bashed. The sheet styrene piece will be used to make a flat platform for the rear of the floor:

Here's the finished chassis and drivetrain. It took the requisite amount of test fitting, fiddling, and styrene tube stock to get the stance, tracking, and wheelbase right (and to get all four wheels on the ground at once...): A few aftermarket doodads were added (slotted disk brakes, calipers, coil, air cleaners), and the kit distributor was drilled to accept plug wires. I filed the top of the distributor cap flat and used the smallest drill bit I have to make the initial holes, then I used a larger bit to get the holes the right size: Next up is the interior. Thanks for checking out the pics!

Love it! I always enjoy seeing your projects, they're outstanding!

Project looks super, love all the details!

Engine's done, and it fits under the hood (yay!). After vacation I'll finish the drivetrain:
-
Excellent details, looking forward to seeing more of this build.

Thanks! I want to hang on to this engine because I see an old school build in my future. Now about the front inner fenders... turns out they are molded as part of the kit chassis so I seperated them with a razor saw and they mount right to the outer fenders. A little massaging for clearance and they'll be good to go.

true, but now I have no choice but to come up with something...
-
They will be spectacular! Wait 'till you see how cool they are going to be!

LOL, those look ok on that F1 but just a couple inches too big IMHO. That's a great reference site BTW, thanks for the link.

I dealt with a round of "kitbasher's surprise" once I checked the fit of the engine to the floorboard and firewall, so I moved the radiator support and motor mounts forward 7mm. I also added the tranny mount and built up the rear of the chassis to mount to the truck bed. Because the chassis tucks up far enough under the body I was able to keep the front control arms in stock position, which was good because of where the headers are going to be positioned. I also flipped the tie rod to clear the oil pan: Only minor grinding of the tranny tunnel on the floor board was required. The firewall was smoothed, but I'll need to fill in the slots where the hood hinges would go: The interior was temporarily assembled to test fit the chassis. Here's how it will sit: -JV

Funny you should mention that. I would normally wait until much later in the process to paint, but lately I've been encountering so many painting gremlins that I didn't want to do a ton of chassis work and end up with a useless truck body. With all the work done that was done to the bed it would have been a tough job to strip it for repainting. Now I have to be extra careful to make sure the super glue on my fingers is good and dry!

This looks terrific! I really like the looks of the wheels from the Deuce kit on this truck. Perfect stance, too. I'm seeing a lot of great pickup trucks on this site these days. I just started one too, and also ended up painting it metallic gray. On this Chevy I think the color works great with the massive chrome grille.

Here's my 1:1. Fun car!
-
I wanted to make sure the hood would clear the top of the hemi, which it will if I use these air cleaners instead of the blower scoop. The hood has the modified snorkel chrome, and I'm going to leave off the hood side chrome after seeing some 1:1 reference photos. I'll touch up the snorkel chrome with Alclad as I go along. Now I'll build the engine, drivetrain, and chassis, and then see how the tranny tunnel and firewall will need to be modified to clear the hemi.

It sounds like he made it look more like the '55-'56 F-100 grille that is more suited to the wide front end of the truck. I'll check it out. With the right ride height this '50 is starting to grow on me. It sort of looks like some kind of industrial ant eater.
-
Thanks guys! One of things that I've struggled with regarding the looks of this '50 Ford is the goofy look of the grille area. (Others will probably take offense to this observation, but that's just how it looks to me.) But I think by recessing the grille a bit and ditching the bumper it helps to modernize the front end a bit. I chose Tamiya light gumetal with pearl clear to try for a tougher, meaner look to further counteract the cartoony look of the front end, and I think it works. Here's how it came out: As far as the hood chrome goes, I'd like to leave off the side trim, but I don't know if the indented lines are really how the 1:1 hood is made. If they aren't on the 1:1 then I'll use the side trim. The front nostrils will have the chrome trim with the centerbar removed. The seats have open oval headrests so that should look good with the oval hood openings. Thanks for checking out the progress!

I opened up the rear wheel wells and the bed floor to clear the wheels and the frame: After test fitting, I could see that the diff will sit low enough so the central part of the floor didn't need to be removed. So, I'll add this bed floor made from sheet styrene: These wheel tubs were made from a monster truck rim and sheet styrene: The rear ride height will end up about here: The headlights were seperated from the grille, and the grille was filed down to recess it. Here's the back of the grille: Here it is in place. The bumper slots were also filled in: Now that I see it coming together I think it will look good painted dark gunmetal with a gray interior with purple, silver, and black fabric highlights (using the spatter paint technique). Thanks for checking out the progress photos!

Here's a thread with info on the Chevy truck: '57 Chevy street truck
-
This is a project that was finished a couple of years ago. Some guys wanted to see more photos of how the truck was made so I figured I'd start this thread. This is basically a kitbash of the WagonRod kit with the '57 Chevy pickup truck kit. Parts of the WagonRod interior, chassis, and drivetrain were used to modernize the truck. The wheels are made by Aoshima, and the paint is Tamiya clear orange over gold. The bed floor is made from basswood, and the bed runners are styrene strips painted with Alclad chrome.
-
Thanks, this was a set of wheels made by Aoshima. They definitely have the AMG look. Perfect for a new Benz or an old Chevy truck.
-
Here's the new chassis (basically a stretched version of the Willys coupe chassis). The original chassis was used to set the wheelbase. The chassis mounting points were repositioned to mount to the cab floorboard, and the upper control arms were seperated because they'll be repositioned with spacers to lower the front end. Whenever I narrow a set of Pegasus wheels I use a razor saw and save the excess chrome rings to be used to widen rims as shown on these wheels: Here's the chassis in place. Next I'll modify the bed floor to clear the rear wheels, frame, and axle diff. There will be Dremel plastic shavings everywhere as usual:
