I can actually live with a bad kit. Hey- I grew up building reissued AMT annual kits ! I don't recall it ever being chiseled into rock that a kit HAS to be accurate! Yes, the really bad kits bother me, but for the most part, only the 'Trekkie Types' among us will get too worked up over it. I'd rather see a substandard kit of a car I like, such as this Challenger, than a well done kit of a car I could give less about (like, say, the Black Widow kit). For the money they spent on making yet ANOTHER '57 Chevy kit -yawn- you'd think they could've tooled up an actual kit of the AAR 'Cuda!
-
Funny- I built this kit with a 440 as well (From the AMT '71 Charger kit). Didn't seem like much of a stretch, as the 1:1 Scouts ran Mopar 727s. (Related note: If you want to jazz up the featureless Scout's transmission, the tranny pan from the Charger kit is a pretty good stand-in.) I usually just leave the IH 345 in 'em, though. It's not a very powerful or economical engine- but they run forever. Think of them as a Slant six, only with twice the slant and two extra cylinders!
-
I recently did likewise- I still haven't got the 1/25 '67 A-800 I yearn for! Sheesh- couldn't Revell or somebody do a Scout kit, instead of thirty or forty more '57 Chevy and Nova variations!? Or better still, a Travelall or a '39 D-series pickup. Yeah- build the '39 stock, or as the recent D-Max diesel powered street rod built for the show circuit by International? Yep, I'd buy a few o' them!
-
Great job- particularly on the stance! The Revell Mustangs have always suffered from the too tall stance and those ###### featureless, clunky truck tires! And the paint may not be correct, but it looks the part anyway! I sure wish Ford would stop making Dark Highland Green unavailable on non-Bullitt Mustangs! I wanted to buy a 1:1 Bullitt last summer- I could have afforded the payments AND insurance, but I'd probably be flat broke when the time came to gas up! Plus, I didn't want to spend another three years at my job to pay it off! I'll settle for my Revell rendition for now!

I'm starting to eye that '86 El Camino kit in my stash and wonder if that four-cam Ford Mod motor from the AMT Phantom Vicky kit would fit... ... or perhaps the supercharged Shelby 5.4? No, maybe kitbash a couple of mod V8s into a Triton V-10...
-
the stance, the weathering, the flatmotor, and those pipes... killer, man! Just killer.

I've got one of these bodies, too- it's a 1951 Buick 'Chopper Head' custom. I was going to open the hood on mine, but I wussed out and am going to do it as a curbside. Right now, it's on a JoHan Olds promo chassis, and has a '57 Buick grille and tri-bar headlights. Still haven't figured out the glass or interior. The body is supposed to use an AMT '51 Chevy as a donor kit... right! Nothing of the chev even comes close to fitting, and the chassis is way too short! I really liked the quality of the body, though- even though it's as thick as a hippo's skull!

AMT Ertl Blueprinter Parts Pack
Chuck Most replied to Lyn's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In the Blueprinter reissue, It seems some of the grilles were misidentified (one of the '55 Chevy grilles is actually a '53 or '54 version) but they're very nice! The engines in this issue were not plated, like the Stevens International issue of a few years back- you know, the one that included the Allison v-12 and the T dragster body. But they're still nice, and the lack of plating actually seems to make the details a bit sharper. I just built two of the Pontiac 421s from the Blueprinter issue- one dual quads, one blown and injected, for a club project, and I'm always picking up more of them when I find them (I think I've got five or six of the Blueprinter engines/grilles sets in various levels of 'completeness'.) I only wish they'd included a Ford 427 (Cammer or no, either one's nice) but hey, Revell did a parts pack 427, so all is good! There was another AMT parts pack reissue around 1997 or so, that included the (plated) Allison motor, a plated tubeular hot rod/dragster chassis, and the Drag accessories pack, which included a TV camera but oddly enough not a Christmas tree staging light setup! Also included was a set of plated wheels, including some six-spoke Halibrands with five-spoke no-lug rears. It would be nice to see more of this stuff reissued, if not as stand-alone products, than perhaps as 'bonus' inclusions in full kits. -
Well put. So, Kevin- when's the Firefighter ambulance gonna get done?

Ever drill a hole and find out its too big or small?
Chuck Most replied to abedooley's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Awesome, I can't even tell you how many times I've misjudged a drill size!- now somebody needs to come up with the solution to the question "Have you ever carved up a kit into an AFX funny car, carefully and painstakingly test-fitting along the way to make sure the axles were where you wanted them, then after final assembly realized that somehow the wheelbase must've magically shrunk 1/8" between the final test fit and final assembly and now the front tires are almost rubbing the backside of the fender opening even though everything looked perfect before all that?" At least the holes will be the right size now! -
Kick me out if I shouldn't be posting these
Chuck Most replied to customcreator's topic in WIP: Dioramas
Not a car in sight, yes, but it is a diorama, and this is the diorama segment of the board... I don't see a problem. Can't comment much else other than it looks cool, as I know nothing about Mortal Kombat! And to the rest of the guys- Sub-Zero would drive a Crosley or a Nash. Think about it... -
Or, just for fun, take a good kit, make it innacurrate as you possibly can, then go back and fix it all! Seriously, happy B-day!

I've been itching for the L-700 w/crushed car load for a while, too! Glad to see the '34 closed cab Pickup back, too- one of my all-time faves!

3 New Round 2 releases indicated as "New Tooling"
Chuck Most replied to Bernard Kron's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Wow. I'm not the only one hoping to see that one back! Rob, you may have a point, but... all the kits mentioned in this thread have been reissued within the last five years as well, yet here they are ,back for another go! I think the Opel last popped in '01 as a Buyer's Choice issue. I'd rather see this one back ONCE this year than the '67 GTO for the third time in two years! Wonder if they'll be bringing back the Diamond Reo tractor anytime soon? THAT one's been out longer than five years! -
Speaking of wasted money,
Chuck Most replied to Joe Handley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You know, I didn't think it was possible to ruin a Wrangler Unlimited (sorry, I don't want to hurt the feelings of anybody who owns one, I just don't dig the idea of a 4-door Wrangler... though the '06 and older Unlimiteds kind of remind me of Scramblers and I do dig those!) but this proves it. I actually feel like going out and hugging the first Wrangler Unlimited I see in the parking lot. (If yo own a 4-door Unlimited, I suggest you do likewise.) Looks like something from that failed Speed reality show from a few years back, Extreme Pimp my Ride- Liberace Edition. Now, if they'd have done that to a Scout... I'd reach through the computer and kill 'em! -
A updatade on my 1:1 travel trailer
Chuck Most replied to Nick Winter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
So, then what do we call ya? Yanuck? Cankee? Canaderican? Ameradian? Ow... my head is killing me right now... -
I wasn't exactly blown away by this kit, and how do they improve it? By molding it in RED ! Watch for the missing trunk lid cut line that should be over the taillamps, and don't expect the engine detail to overwhelm you, and you should be fine. I can't vouch for it's overall accuracy or anything like that, but it sure looks like a new Camaro to me. Dave, I think you could probably make something very sweet from this kit, just brace yourself for lots of bodywork. The first (and last) AMT Camaro Concept I bought (gray plastic) was basically just one big series of sink marks. I ended up stealing the wheels and tires (best part of the kit) for another project and flushing the rest of the kit down the toilet. Stealing the tires worked well. Flushing styrene castings down your toilet, however... NOT reccomended. Can't wait to see what you come up with, Treehugger!

3 New Round 2 releases indicated as "New Tooling"
Chuck Most replied to Bernard Kron's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Let's see.... USA-1 Monster Truck 1/25 kit... yawn. Hasn't this one been reissued to death already in the last three years or so? 1969 Dodge Daytona 1/25 kit... yawn. Same old junker that was just in the lineup near the end of RC2's tenure. 1967 Pontiac GTO 1/25 kit... yawn... sheesh, I'm seeing a pattern developing... General Lee 1969 Dodge Charger 1/25 kit... okay, this one isn't so bad, provided of course that it comes with the body that has the RIGHT REAR WINDOW THIS TIME! (Tunneled like on the craptastic '70 F&F release, not flush like a 500/Daytona) And thank goodness it won't be molded in that hideous, see-through orange plastic like the last go-around! I'll be much happier to see the '77 Monaco back on the shelves, even the 'fixed' '74 Roadrunner/GTX/Satellite/Whathaveyou will most likely end up in my 'build this' pile. It would be cool if they 'updated' the '74 by slapping the body onto the AMT '71 Charger R/T chassis, a kitbash I've always wanted to try, but so far haven't. Still, the '74 with duals sounds like a must-buy. I'll still be content to wait for the Double Dragster re-release... THAT's going to be great !!!! I don't care if it is going to have that tacky collectable 'tin' box... I'll be snapping as many of those puppies up as the law will allow! Maybe more, even! I'd REALLY like to see them rerelease some stuff that we haven't seen in years, like they did with the '51 Chev drop top. Don't they have a late '70's Datsun 280 tool from the Lesney years? Or the Dodge cargo van, maybe with the original MPC annual kit's grille restored to it? Or... here's a thought, how's about bringing back the MPC/AMT '32 Chevy Cabriolet? Tool us up a new panel delivery body and restore the Gangbusters accessories... we promise we'll be good if you do! Sheesh... even the old '70 Galaxie cop car... I'd be happy to see that one back, incorrect Boss 429, too-deep wheels, and all! Sure, I know plenty of people are going to love to see the USA-1 , Daytona, and '67 Goat back, but honestly, if you gave me the weekend to prowl around inside the MPC and AMT tooling crypts, I could pull out three better choices for re-releases than these, as could you! These three kits, in their latest previous reissues, are still clogging the shelves at all three of my local shops. I'm not sure why they think they need one more run out of them, and I wonder what neat stuff is still tucked away in Dyersville, just waiting to see the light after decades of dust and dark... -
I can't belive they let it slide
Chuck Most replied to oldman23's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
And here I was, thinking it was something from Star Wars... Ernie- if you think this kit is bad... check out the Trumpeter '60 Bonneville. I think the engine was developed by some moonlighting Lego engineers ! And the little gaffes and foul-ups, wow. I'm pretty lenient on stuff like this (well, more so than many other modelers), but the whole time I was working on that kit I was constantly muttering"Oh, you have GOT to be kidding me..." Builds up into a pretty fair representation of a '60 Bonnie, though, if you don't mind a little extra pain and suffering during the build process! -
Pontiac Musings. How about a buildoff?
Chuck Most replied to Ron Hamilton's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I only had one Pontiac model ('65 2+2) in my collection when GM announced Pontiac's number had come up. (Not counting ANOTHER '65 2+2 I built that my dad now has.) http://public.fotki.com/ChuckMost/customs/08383.html Since that time, I've been actively seeking out Tin Indian kits, and I've since finished a '62 Catalina, '65 GP, and that craptastic Trumpeter '60 Bonnie. I have two Goats stashed away- '65 and '04, I'll post them when I can. Not sure if I could actually participate in a build-off, though- throw me a deadline and I fold like a futon -
Sounds like it'd be cheaper and easier just to pay the 25 cents and not bring something! For my money, though, glad you opted NOT to do that! Maybe if my 'club' had such a policy I'd be a bit more motivated...

Well, I'm not CB, but for what it's worth, I like how this one's coming!
