  1. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: NONE There is no completion deadline so as to allow all participants to build at their own pace or as circumstances permit. Group Build is open to all skill levels and all scales (i.e. 1/43rd, 1/32nd, 1/24th, 1/20th, 1/16th, etc) Q&A, suggestions, and comments here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=89848 Revision: Particpants are now free to change or revise their choice of subject car. 2. That's great Paul! See you on the grid. Post #4 revised That's a superb start JC. Try not to finish it before the rest of us even start
  3. More progress on the door jamb: Started work on the door. I carefully cut a groove on the vent frame to accept the side glass using my razor saw: I ground off part of the molded trim to provide clearance for the glass: I built the glass guide channel using Evergreen strips:
  4. Coming along nicely, Tom!
  5. That's nice, Mitchell. Love the colour as well. Is that gunmetal grey?
  6. Started adding more structures to the door jamb: Quick check on the door fit and making sure that it sits flush with the surrounding bodywork: A quick and thick coat of filler/primer or surfacer to begin blending: I also thinned out the lower grill openings on the front cowl based on my observations of the full sized car:
  7. Thanks guys for the very kind compliments, I don't know about great craftsmanship but I'm having a lot of fun even if it gets frustrating sometimes. And I thank you for sticking with this build as it is turning out to be a saga! And to think that I was going to build it "box stock"
  8. I've modified the thread title to avoid confusion because there will be a properly formatted and official "Endurance Racing Group Build" thread. In the meanwhile, this initial thread can serve to answer questions and as a place to sign up for interested participants.
  9. Brilliant, JC! Entrant's list (post #4) revised Post #7 revised
  10. JC, you are more than welcome to participate as long as progress on that GT40 is no more than 25%. You can also participate with multiple entries if you wish as long as they are all at or less than 25% built.
  11. Hi Paul. I wanted to leave it up to the participants to set their own personal time limit. This should allow everyone to build at their own pace and encourage everyone to challenge themselves. Out of the Box builds, partial or full on conversions, massive scratch building, insanity are welcome and highly encouraged. The provisional stipulations are: 1. Subject automobile must have competed in at least a single round of an FIA sanctioned endurance race and can be documented as such. 2. Coloration and markings should be reasonably accurate. 3. Partially begun (up to 25%) projects are acceptable. 4. All participants must check in with their intended project(s) before the start of the 2014 24 Hours of LeMans (see "countdown clock" link above) 5. Participants are responsible for posting and updating their build progress. 6. Because of the possible length and duration of this thread as well as to maintain focus and integrity, all posts by the entrants must be entirely relevant to the build and must be limited to photos or snapshots of the build in progress. Any irrelevant posts or pictures of pets while charming will be deleted. Spectators or non-participants are prohibited from posting anything in the thread. Any comments, suggestions, or assistance such as reference photos should be conducted off thread or by PM. 7. This is intended to be a fun and NON-COMPETITIVE group build with the goal of challenging oneself and achieving personal goals regardless of challenges, difficulties or setbacks. Again, these are provisional and are open to suggestions by the participants. BTW, here's a link to a comprehensive list of previous 24 Hours of LeMans winners. Clicking onto the winning entry's listing opens another link to photos of the actual car: http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/winners/&race=le_mans
  12. An alternative to micro balloons is baking soda. Remember when using CA or CA with fillers is that the patch will be harder than the surrounding plastic. This will require a lot of care when blend sanding otherwise you will end up sanding more of the surrounding plastic than you initially intended to.
  13. Project snapshot: Started work on the doors and door jambs. Thinned out the door skins: Used more robust .030 thick styrene for the door jamb base structure because of stresses due to the doors opening and closing. The hinge area is also reinforced with a bead of thick CA on the inside joints. Additional surface details will be added.
  14. Entrants: mikevillena: Porsche 935/78 123yokomo: Aston Martin LMP1 afx: '65 Ford GT40 P/1005 maltsr: Audi R10 TDI
  15. Bill, you've got the whole bloody grid in your stash!!! So far there will two of us lonesome endurance fans building but we will press on regardless. Isn't that the spirit of the 24 Heures du Mans anyway? We ought to kick off the build to concide with the start. The countdown clock: http://www.24h-lemans.com/
  16. Painted the driver's seat and used some red flocking to simulate the cover. I also used Scale Motorsport Kevlar decal for the first time. Had to apply MicroSol to get it to snuggle down. A few tiny bubbles here and there. Oh well. Started building out the front cowl structures:
  17. Thanks again, Robin. Unfortunately, I already painted the driver's seat red w/ yellow kevlar so French Blue won't look right. So it's down to Rosso or Silver.
  18. Nice job Shaun!
  19. Found some reference photos for the passenger seat. The upholstery has an interesting texture: I experimented with various techniques but I think I've found something that comes close: But I found something that is even closer: Rollcage in primer: Played around with making a mold of the seat from my Alfa 155 V6 DTM and tried to familiarize myself with casting. First shot was horrendous as to be expected. I modified the mold somewhat and I preheated it before pouring the resin. This Alumilite Super Plastic is really great. It flows very nicely and cures firmly but is easy to carve: Spent some time cleaning up the seat and filling in some short areas and pin holes. Fabricated the seat mount:
  20. Lucky you! Have fun and take lots of pictures
  21. With Le Mans just around the proverbial corner, would anyone be interested in an Ednurance Racing group build? Perhaps restricted to cars that are documented to have actually competed in endurance racing througout the years especially Le Mans. Open to all scales? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEyYDxdMMnE
  22. Hi Gene. Yes, I use a candle to stretch sprue. With practice you can learn to vary the thicknesses that you can draw. You can also vary the taper at the ends.
  23. Alistair, let's start an Endurance Racing Group Build. Le Mans is just around the corner!
  24. Great start Robert! I see from the 1/43rd scal e models in the background that you are an endurance fan. I especially like the Rebellion Racing Lotus. With Le Mans just a few weeks away, perhaps we can start an Endurance Racing Group Build?
  25. When filling holes I try to use a length of stretched sprue from the same kit. This ensures that the plug will have the same hardness and expansion properties as the surrounding plastic.
