Great product for replicating Vinyl tops!!!
cruz replied to cruz's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I would just sand it down I guess, I don't see that being much of an issue. Of course I would advice that you leave the painting of the body for last! -
I have put in some more time on my Caddy. Decided to start doing some of the interior, here are some photos of the progress!! Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki AS you guys can see, BMF really makes everything pop when you compare it with just the painted part! Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Tires, rims and whitewalls are gorgeous along with the kit!!

Yes Casey, the primer will actually make the adhesive dry quicker, just make sure to give it enough time to do so. The first time I did this, I didn't try it on any spare body, I just went ahead and shot it straight on the model and finished it off after that. I would suggest to try it on a spare body though.... -

After BMF/Polishing!! Hosted on Fotki I hope this is helpful and something you guys might want to try!!! -
This is a little trick that Jairus told me about. I am seeing this question about simulating vinyl tops popping up a lot around here and thought about sharing this with you guys! I built this '68 Charger several months ago and wanted to replicate a vinyl top. Of course, I also bought some Plastruct styrene pieces to simulate the molding that separates the vinyl roof from the body since this model did not have a molded vinyl top like the Revell '69 Charger has. I visited a Michael's Craft Store and purchased a can of 3M Spray Mount Artist's Adhesive. It's a product used to mount pictures, posters or prints against any chosen surface by the user. This is the Plastruct styrene that I purchased, it shows the size I went with, of course, you guys can choose a different size if you so desire, I just thought that this one was the closest to scale after studying some reference photos of a 1/1 car. After placing the styrene pieces around the roof and masking the body, I shot the 3M Spray Mount lightly making several passes until getting complete coverage. One thing to remember, this will not dry anytime soon so right after spraying it, cover it up with primer and let it dry. I use a food dehydrator to speed up the drying time on my painted parts so after 2 hours it was dry. After drying was complete, I used a 3200 grit sandpaper and sanded the roof down a bit more, I thought it was a little too grainy so by sanding it down a little further the vinyl look was more noticeable. In this photo, I painted and cleared the whole car. After everything was dry, I wetsanded and polished the body and ultimately masked and painted the roof with Testor's semi gloss black.

Welcome Jim, this is the place to be if you are into scale automotive modeling, lots of good people here to help you in anything you want or perhaps you will be doing the helping!!

Nice little project, good luck!!
-
Very creative, the Corvette rims make it stand out even more!!
-
Very cool and welcome but, one question, how can you lurk for so long around a place like this and not readily become a part of it? It is the best place to be if you are into automotive modeling!!! Happy to have you here, you do great work!!

Thanks guys! Kevin, yes, I do use Testor's Metalizers throughout my builds, I like using the various shades to create different contrasts within the simulated metalic parts. I also like the fact that you can buff them to a higher luster, they really help in making your builds more realistic!! Thanks again for everyone's input!!

I have been putting in some time at the bench working on a Monogram '59 Caddy, I have the chassis and engine complete but I still have to paint the body and complete the interior. I will show just a few pictures I have taken and the link at the bottom so that you may see what I have been doing in my dungeon of glue!!! Hosted on Fotki It is based on this kit, I like the hardtop more than the convertible and also like the fact that the vinyl top is molded in already! Hosted on Fotki I have been working on the rear lights and chrome molding pieces, these have a terrible fit so I have had to take some plastic off in some areas while add some in others..... Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki I am planning on painting it similar to this color on this 1/1 photo, I had some Rainbow Products Lacquers laying around the dungeon and decided to use them. What Kind Of Clear Gives The Best Shine?
cruz replied to doug2013's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to be a Testors clear Enamel user when I started in the hobby but eventually moved away from them, too thick, yellow over time, slow drying and yes, it used to cover all the intricate details. I have a friend in my club that does the same thing, dumps too much of that stuff at one time, you can hardly notice the panel lines and other details. I am using the Tamiya Clears more often now, they are fine and keep all my details intact and like Bob says, they shoot beautifully out of the airbrush. I do have to try those Testor's one shot clears one of these days, I am hearing a lot of good things about them!! -
Our January 2010 meeting was a success even though our President did not attend. Even though we missed him, I decided to cover for him and stop the people from their regular yawning!!!! Swearing And Name Calling On The Board
cruz replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Good to hear you enforcing some rules around here Gregg, it was getting a little "dramatic" around here!!!! -
Of course I don't mind!!

Looks pretty good, I just can't trade my old and trustworthy Badger Crescendo for this, I love it so much that I bought a second one just in case mine stops working or if the parts are not easy to acquire anymore. I think this one is good for beginners or individuals who are tired of their current airbrushes and want to experience something new and different. Thanks for sharing and I hope you enjoy it!!
