thank you all for the great compliments! to sort of answer questions.. it's built from the original issue of the kit. the paint DOES look crazy in the sun LOL yep, i lowered it about 4-5inches? the front bumper used to mount above the chassis...it's below it now. the interior tub is so shallow, that it was easy to lower because of the gap between chassis and tub. thank you for referring to it as a KEMP, that is cool to read!

down to the finish it was getting to be a PIA. the windsheild didn't want to go up all the way because it's a tad too wide, the radiator support didn't fit but i made it fit, the interior tub doesn't have a tranny hump, so i MADE it work lol. being this is an old kit, the chrome has some fading and there are some minor scratches in the windows i could not buff out. overall.....i am happy with it, it felt good to finally pull this down and BUILD it! i hope you like.... couldn't help myself! i have been putting stuff together most the night. tomorrow night or very early morning this will be done. i am kinda bummed that i don't or am not spending the time to detail paint more....BUT, i am really happy with the overall "shelf" appearance. everything on the outside view is A-OK and that is all i care about. USPS parcel post SUCKS!!!!
RodBurNeR replied to truckman1958kits's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
i have been using everything for years.....i always go with the best deal , most the time i am in a trade or something....but if i sell something the buyer pays actual shipping and they know what shipping option i am using before it's shipped. i ALWAYS get delivery confirmation and or insurance. the postal service is funny that way.....they get overloaded at times and only push the most important stuff forward to fill trucks and planes and get it on the move to it's destination. if there is a package that has no delivery confirmation, is not priority or insured....basically it sits in the background until they have knocked most of the pile down. this could be what happened with your package. -
thanks for all your comments! she is polished finally! man what a tough sucker to take pics of in the conditions you see. anywho..i tried to get some reflections in there. notice the exhaust from my paint booth reflect on the trunk. should be able to make out all the little detail from the flex pipe. i just posted this on another board, and have been asked everywhere....so here is an example for now lol i use a Black Gold polishing kit. i think it ranges from 2,600-12,000 grit sanding cloths. if you start with the lowest grit and work your way up to the 12,000....you don't really need to even wax, it's just that smooth and clean looking! each grit removes the scratches from the last grit used. starting with the 2,600 will knock down orange peel or roughness in the clear coat. i use KIT Carnauba auto wax when i am done with the sanding, which is what gives me the really deep and wet shine. other than that.....if i didn't wax, it would be almost the same.....just less glossy or deep like. i am still not done sanding the Desoto at this point because there are so many angles and sharp edges. the kit i use also comes with a foam sanding block which is soft and can be cut up to suit you. the sanding cloths are very flexible and usable over and over, unlike wet/dry sand paper. here is what it looks like with NO wax (the hood shown above was waxed) some comparison pics this is finished with 12,000 and NO wax Hosted on Fotki this shows how dull i have each panel before the final waxing....everything must be completely dull and smooth, free of divits or whatever.... Hosted on Fotki this is to show the waxed hood next to the trunk lid which was only hit with 2,600 so far. Hosted on Fotki

ahh ok i don't go to scale auto. now you say 40s 50s 60s above...but below you say lowriders, rat rods etc.... these don't fit into the "custom" theme of the years you mentioned. could you be more specific to what years are allowed , sorry to be a pain. personally....i would build for it no matter what is "allowed" to be entered......because it gives me an excuse to build another model.
-
what is the other forum you speak of? not trying to take anything away, but i am involved in several build offs as it is and they all involved pre 70 period rod and kustom subjects. i would be interested in a custom build off.....but i won't be able to commit until after August or something since these other builds are going.

i can't remember the first one i was in? i do remember going to K-Mart a lot with my dad and uncle. they would buy me a kit , paint and glue and that is what got me into this hobby. i started to build in about '78? back then, K-Mart had a whole isle just for models. one side was all cars and other was military etc.... they had lots of paints and everything. i remember going to Safeway grocery to buy kits too, they carried a good assortment. heck back then, every place sold model kits. pharmacies, groceries, retails .....all carried models. Everyone i knew built models. It was not normal to go to anyone's house that didn't have at least a few built models or a hobby room they spent time in. This is from the time i can remember starting through the late 80s. After that, i found myself alone. My uncle owned a Hobby Town which i loved to visit back in the early-mid 90s, but he died and that is gone. My dad died in the late 90s, so pretty much i was totally alone and didn't go to....or know of....any hobby shops. I bought my models at Whatever store i could find them in. When my uncle died, i did find some other shops when i was living in a small town , Chadron, Nebraska. My wife and i would take road trips across Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota buying antiques and things we liked to plenish the store we ran. On those trips, i would run into a small hobby shop ,town auction, estate sale or garage sale with models and i would buy them. After them days, in about 1995-96 i discovered the internet and well the rest is history. I still go to Hobby Town and many other places to shop.......but most of all i buy from friends and on ebay. I like most everyone else, has to watch pennies and hobby shops seem to be more expensive than buying on internet...even with shipping. (unless the stuff is vintage of course) To directly answer your question, the best hobby shop i was ever in was Hobby Town, Hobby Plex which is still here in Omaha......but it was best when Roger ran it. When he left, all the morals and respect left too. I used to let him know when a new kit was coming , he would order them in and save me one so i was sure to get it. He called and let me know it was in, i REALLY appreciated the customer care.
