What's the story behind your user name/avatar?
Darin Bastedo replied to JollySipper's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
My user name I was born with, and my avatar is a tribute to my late wife who was an avid snoopy collector. -
Any of you interested in getting together and talking Models, eating snacks and just having fun? PM me. I'm hoping to get an informal club going. nothing organised except that we'd all meet at the same time and place. No dues no officers no by-laws or taking of meeting minutes. just a show up if you want to monthly get together where you can bring your models and chew the fat. If we are feeling really really ambitious perhaps we'd come up with a group name.

why are those 60's models so rare?
Darin Bastedo replied to randx0's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The way model companies operated in the 60's and 70's is very different from how the operate now. Back then for instance AMT would get the promo contract for the 1968 Chevy Impala. That would pay for tooling and such, and then after the dealers got their promos they would modify the tooling into a model kit. they produced the 68s for a year, and then the next year they would re-tool it into the 69s. That removed any option of re-issuing the 68 kit. If a vintage tool does exist today it is either because it wasn't part of the promo/annual program (like the AMT Mercedes 300sl or the 1955 nomad) or it is the last year of that kit's annual production (like the 1980 Volare or 1979 Monte carlo) That is why kits like the 1977 Volare roadrunner super pack cars are so rare. they were one year only. Today things are very different. when Moebius released it's Hudson hornet, the intention from the beginning was to make a model kit they could sell for years. The Revell 1969 Chargers will most likely be produces for decades to come, thus kits like these will never be as rare as the one year only kits from the 60s and 70s. -
Best thread in a long time.
Darin Bastedo replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This reminds me of the TV shows about TV shows. I mean jeez there are actually TV shows that talk about what happened on TV shows the previous day! Do we really need a tread that talks about another thread? Why not just post in that thread how cool it is. It bumps that thread, and makes your point. -
What Would You Show Up In?
Darin Bastedo replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ok money no object huh? Well regardless of budget my ride would have to reflect a certain attitude and style... So I might show up in Steve McQueen's Siata 208s.. Or perhaps Count Rossi's street legal Porsche 917... Or if the film I was nominated for was an indie flick, I might go counter culture and show up in a Tatra T-87... Or if I'm feeling a little patriotic, how about an AMC AMX/3 Prototype? Or maybe I'd just go subtle in a silver Mercedes 300 SL... -
New member from FRANCE
Darin Bastedo replied to ERIC L's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Welcome Eric. I love your country and hope to visit it some day. Any country that would produce cars such as the Peugeot 205-16 Rally car, and the Renault R5 Turbo can't be bad! -

So me posting a thread which is a link to this thread would be a no-no? -
What Would You Show Up In?

I'd show up in this... And have Danica Patrick get in after I get out and do a smokey burn-out up the block and off into the distance. -
Need some Corvette inspiration...
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I guess I'm not making myself very clear. I'm looking more for some color scheme suggestions rather than graphics. something that will make it pop. I don't want to do something common, like silver with a tan interior. I want something I wouldn't normally think of that looks good even though it's unconventional. for instance the Corvette ZR-1 spyder that they painted silver with bright yellow interior, or the prototype Callaway speedster that was done in the pearl green with electric blue interior. I'm truing to think outside the box but I'm stuck. -
Ummmmm...yeah, sure.
Darin Bastedo replied to deja-view's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
First off it's not just that it's a typo, it's that they spelled the name of the person whose autograph was supposedly on the Item. it makes it that much more fishy. Second I've made many a typo here and unless it turned out to be funny nobody ever made mention of it, so I doubt this is as big of an issue as you are making it out to be. -

That is not authentic. It isn't even close to his handwriting. -
Need some Corvette inspiration...
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
here is what I'm building, it's an open top version of the Revell Aerovette. I took about 3 scale inches out of the top and made it into a speedster. sorry about the image quality but it's just a quick snapshot -
Need some Corvette inspiration...
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually the car isn't exactly based on the C3 vette, but anything that can be done graphically to a C3 would work with this body style. I'd considered a modified 78 indy pace car theme, or something along that line. but the car will be wild, not nessesarily the paint. I guess i'm just looking for color schemes and such. -
I've got a really wild corvette project planned. I'm not yet ready to release the details of it, but I'm stuck on the paint scheme. It will be done as a kinda - sorta - coulda - woulda been a Factory concept. Looking for cool color combos and designs that would work on '68 - '82 corvette. so if you guys could post some of your favorite pictures of either models or 1:1 Corvettes with cool paint schemes I'd appreciate this.

Way OT. Need recommendations for professional resume writers
Darin Bastedo replied to Monty's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
This reminds me of a time long ago I was working at Office Depot. I was stocking the resume' pasper when a customer started asking me for advice on writing his resume'. I said, "If I knew anything about writing a resume', do you think I'd be working here? You should talk to my idiot boss. He must have had a killer resume' to fool them into hiring him." -

Why Did Figures in Model Kits Disappear?
Darin Bastedo replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just checked all the model kits I have that came with figures and none of them have disappeared yet, so I guess mine are safe. -

At 7:31 Today Feb. 15 2012, my loving wife Bobbi Bastedo lost her long battle with cancer, and passed away peacefully. She was resting comfortably and simply stopped breathing. I wish to thank all of you who held us up in prayer, and took the time to send messages of encouragement and support. Many of you praised me for the love I showed toward Bobbi, but she gave as good as she got and more. She truly was the light in my darkness and the lifeline to which I clung to. It was through her that I learned my hearts full capacity, and if not for her I would have never known the love a father feels for his child. Morgan Nowak & her mother are the twin miracles that raised the level of joy in my life to the point I can barely remember the darkness my heart was in before they came into my life.
