Model Building ethics question...
Darin Bastedo replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That sounds like a reasonable balance. I think that answers my moral dilemma. Thanks. -
If you enter a contest, with a model that has a resin conversion body that you did the master for, should you be able to list the work done on the master, on the spec sheet for the model? The thing is I can see it both ways. For instance, I did a master for a Ford GTX-1 roadster. If I build one model of it, technically I did the mods to the original Ford GT body, so in a round about way I did the mods on my model. But lets say for the sake of argument, I built ten of these kits with that resin body. I didn't do those mods ten times I simply used copies of that one body on all ten. I know this is an issue that will come up with at least one of my contest entries this year and I want to be as honest and above board as possible.

One thing that kind of blurs the line between scratch-building and kit-bashing, is the use of parts from an existing kit for their shape, but not for their original purpose. for instance taking a roof section that just happens to have the right curvature you need to build the rear under car ground effects tunnel for your Lemans race car. Is that any different from using I-beam shaped Plastruct for it's shape?

How to photograph a model?
Darin Bastedo replied to meaneyme's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Drew Hierwarter just did an excellent article on this in the previous issue of Model Cars Magazine. If you ask me it's a must have for anyone entering an online photo contest or posting pictures online. -
Very cool. Looks great, and the design is well done. It looks like it could be factory.

Just Getting Back In The Hobby
Darin Bastedo replied to Pete Aron's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Welcome back. I think you will find much has changed since you last built a model. What do you like to build? -
I keep coming back to this. I love it! I wish I had thought of this. I may just have to do my own version of this. It looks like a fun build.

Scratch Building an Aussie Ford Falcon **New update,15/1/18**
Darin Bastedo replied to ShawnS's topic in WIP: Model Cars
in-freakin'-credible! Love it. You have some skills! -
This particular one? No. it's not built in a way that is easily cast. But if there is a caster interested in doing one I'll be glad to do one that can be cast. It would be a complex kt though, because to do it right you would have to the body, hood, front clip, corrected interior bucket, door panels, seats, grill, and bumpers. In addition the decals for this are long out of production so you would have to find someone to print them for the kit. I'm planning to do an1984 Hurst/Olds though that would probably be more commercially viable. It would still be a complex kit, but if someone wanted to cast it, I'm sure the demand for it would be better.

What a coincidence, I traded in my '68 Thing-a-ma-bob on a 2011 Do-Hicky. I liked the styling of my classic Thing-a-ma-bob, but the Mileage and reliability of the 2011 Do-Hicky is so much better. I just wish I could get my old '68 Thing-a-ma-bob in scale. It was available in resin back in the eighties but the caster went out of business, and they go for a fortune on ebay.

The grill will actually be made up of four separate etchings. one for the top of the grill, one for the deeper layer of grill bars, one for the forward layer of grill bars and finally the emblem. I'm looking forward to seeing how it comes out myself, as it looks like it will be the first piece I do. I already have one side of the front end done. here's a shot. As you can see I've got some more work to do, but this will give you an Idea of what I'm doing. I'll cut some clear sheet to fill the side marker opening and back clear orange over BMF

1/32 Monogram Chevy Van
Darin Bastedo replied to Casey's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Yup I was all kinds of '80's cool. The calculator watch, faded jeans jacket, Magnum PI mustache, and Velcro running shoes. -
Since the real car used Goodyear Radial GT tires, I'll use the Monogram versions of those, but since the Decals sheet I have has the markings on it for those tires, I'll use the newer ones that have the plain sidewalls.

Racers stuck behind one!

I found out one of the contests I'll be going to this year is having an Indy Race/Pace Car theme so I yanked this stalled project out of the stack. This is how it looked last time I photographed it a few years ago I've since restyled the front end to match the 1981 front end of the original, and am drawing out the artwork for the photo-etched grill. I'll be using Fred Cady Decals, and will make scratch-built wheels for the project. The Roof is completely scratch-built from the windshield back, and I used the flat hood from the Monogram NASCAR Buick Regal to replace the bulged Buick Grand national Hood. When I finish the front end Mods I'll post some more pictures.

I can't tell you how many of those I built as a kid. I was heavy into the custom van craze. still am a closet van nut... This is me 25 years ago in my custom van. -
Very Cool! great job making the build your own. Where is the skeleton from?

With a handle like "Dr. Odyssey" I expected your real name to be Homer. Welcome aboard.

How often do you go on this Forum...?
Darin Bastedo replied to Ramfins59's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Gregg, after some of the things I read last night I don't think anyone will have a problem with those people getting banned. I equate coming here to dining in my favorite diner. I see a lot of people I know and have a nice quiet meal. Then some lug nut comes along being loud and abusive, and the big guy comes out of the kitchen and shows him the door. Everyone appluads and goes back to eating and reading the paper. Thanks for coming out of the kitchen. -

Harry thank you for taking out the trash once again, but I think you missed a post above.
