1/16 Scale Army Vega Funny Car - Finished 10/14/2018

Gabriel, Thank you. Well I was able to sit down at the bench tonight an put a little more time into this build. Tonight my plan was to get a little work done that I needed to to the front end. I have been meaning to redo my front spindles somewhat so that the new rims Jim turned would slide onto the axle. So with what I was able to accomplish tonight, it looks like I am at the point where I am ready to start the rework of the chassis tomorrow night and get the engine moved forward as well as moving the mounts for the raidus rods. With that said, here are the pics from tonights progress.... I started out tonight by taking my spindles off and getting they new axles ready: So what I did was I took some tube and had to sand the diameter down just a smidge to get to fit into the mounting hole of the rim. My plan was to use an 00-90 bolt inside of the axle to mount it to the spindle. So I cut off the stock spindle axle, drilled a hole and then tapped the hole. I cut down a 00-90 bolt to make a stud out of it and threaded it into the spindle. Next I threaded the inside of the tube and proceeded to thread the tube on to the axle. when I had it almost all the way on the stud I took my Weld-On #3 glue and put it on the areas I wanted to glue and finished threading the tubing as far as I could go bonding the tube to the spindle. I wanted the axle to be strong so I thought this would be the best way to accomplish that: Here is the finished spindles with the new axles installed: Test fitted into the rims: -

John... you are doing some great work on this so far. Love the mesh work. Very nice bud. Keep up the great work. i know you will hit this one out of the park like the rest of your builds. -
Shane.. You have nailed it with the ride height. Your mock up with the amt bed looks great next to the side view of the real car. Keep up that great work.

Hey Gabriel I may have to take you up on that offer. I am debating if I sould just cut new studs and start fresh with them. the reason I was saying that is that I looked up Blackenit and saw that it can be purchased from Micro Mark and an article there said that they wanted you to have it clean of dirt or grease. Plus with my crazy work schedule not sure when I would be able to meet up to do it. Brad and Bart.... I can't agree more with the both of you that we have so many friendly people here willing to help others out. Its one of the reasons I enjoy this model site so much. its a great group of people we have here. The gears have been turning in my mind a little bit. after taking a look at this blackening process, it is making me wonder if it would be worth while to do this process to my headers instead of paint. Guess I should do a test sample first to see if I like how it turns out -

Jim... I could easly do that. I also just took a look on summit racing and ARP has studs that look to be yellow zinc plated. So I think I will leave studs as they are because the brass looks to represent zinc plating.... Color is some what similar. I could also do the bluing to the lug nuts. Thanks for the suggestion -

Scott....I do get my nuts and bolts from Bob at Scale Hardware when I had ordered these bolts for the studs he only had them in brass. I just went to his site and see that he has them in nickle plated brass now. I am debating if i should order them and swap them out. Probably would look better. The washers I have I got from micro mark so I would have to do something with them being brass -

This bluing process sounds interesting. I have to ask what color would you guys suggest on the studs, nuts and washers? i did a search on it and it seems from what I found from one company you use this solution and believe you mix it and let it soak for a certain amount of time. I believe t said it would get get jet black in about 30 mins. My only dilema is that i have already put the studs in the hubs with loctite but i should be able to break them free. I am half tempted to buy a bottle and try it on some sample parts. It looks as if this stuff is about 20 bucks for an 8 oz bottle. What do you guys think? -

Scott.... thanks buddy for the kind words. I feel I am making progess slowly right now but with the little work I was able to accomplish tonight I sould be able to start the rework by this weekend I am hoping. I had to sand the inside of the tires down a little more to get the rims to not fit so tight and was able to start adjusting the rear end by narrowing it just a smidge to get the tires to tuck up next to the chassis so the body would fit them under the wheel wells. Bart... Thanks on the compliments. One of the other reasons I was using the washers is because when I polish the wheels I didn't want the nuts to scratch the rim up so I figured that the washers would protect them plus on my muscle car the lug nuts I have for my Weld Wheels has washers behind them. I agree with you about the painted studs. sometimes I wish we could get some of the bolts in more than just Brass. But they work so I have no complaints. That sounds great on the circular emblem. I have no clue what I was going to for the center on the hubs, plus I haven't a clue what brand of axles the Army Car ran. since you brought that up I am going to look at my pics to see if i can see an emblem on them or not. Enjoy your trip over to the Philippines and we can touch base when you get back. -
Thanks Wayne, when I first saw them I thought maybe they were slot car rims. From what I have heard JPS has gone out of business right?
-
Shane... this is going to be a great build. I am looking forward to seeing progress on this. It is a neat looking race car.

Mooneyzs replied to Mooneyzs's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanks Brad.... I wasn't planning on painting the studs, nuts or washers since they will be taken on and off when it is shown at shows. Give me the freedom to display with tires on or off. You are right now the real work begins...lol tonight i am hoping to.get the rear end narrowed. I am also planning on redoing the front spindles a little bit as well. Need to made some tweaks on them.....then it,s time to start cuting the chassis up and reworking it to move the engine forward. -

I was able to sit down tonight and do a little more work to this build. Not much but I am happy to say that I am finished with the hubs other than I need to glue the disk brakes to them. I was able to finish tapping and installing the hubs this evening. On both hubs I had used loctite on the studs when installing them. was hoping that I could have gotten more done tonight but will be working on it tomorrow night too. Here are a few pics: The Completed Hubs with Studs installed: I had to test fit the hubs and wheels together. I even took washers and the bolts and installed them to make sure they all fit well: -
Wayne... This is looking Killer. Great job! I have to ask again where these rims from slot car parts? They look great.
