what pets hang out with you wall u build
MrObsessive replied to modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
These are my two "Modeling Buds".........the gray one is Captain--------I've had him since he was a tiny 6 week old kitten (now 6) and the big orange one is KitKat (7 years old). He was given to me by a lady I worked with when he was a little over a year old because she could no longer keep him. Even though they're not from the same litter, they're best buds and they don't bother my model stuff. KitKat is pretty aloof, while Captain is always under my feet no matter where I am..............Maybe he thinks I'm still his mother since I got him so tiny and young! If I turn the air compressor on though, Captain's terrified of that and leaves the room now as soon as I reach for it! -
'50 Olds Rocket 88 Diecast Repaint-Rebuild Finished!
MrObsessive replied to John Goschke's topic in Model Cars
John, that is so sharp and clean, I wouldn't have known it was a diecast if you hadn't said so! Yes, that would make an excellent kit! Offered as a custom, hardtop and even a convertible! You gotta have a pair of fender skirts thrown in a maybe a windshield visor. Wonder how hard it would be to do a 88 Holiday hardtop based on the '51 Chevy? Yeah, AMT missed the boat IMO by not kitting this one! -
Brendan, if I can build this with my big 'ol hands............. Anyone can! The model is a 1:43 Provence Moulage 1965 Simca Abarth I built about 7 years ago. It was also a "Grail" of mine!

Airbrush cleaning methods...
MrObsessive replied to abedooley's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Abe, check here for the thread you wanted. As far as cleaning, I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to cleaning between paint job periods-------Meaning I'll take mine totally apart and clean mine with lacquer thinner. I like to run lacquer thinner through the airbrush until no color is showing, then take it apart to get inside the barrel and feeder tube with a pipe cleaner, and a very tiny pipette to clean inside the needle tip. With the needle itself (I have a Badger Crescendo) I pull the needle out of the front of the barrel, and then reinsert it from the rear. This saves wear and tear on the needle bearing which needs to stay in good shape for proper airbrush function. Put it all back together, make sure the cap's on the needle, and I'm all set for next time. -
I just want to give a big THANKS to Gerry Paquette (Exoticsbuilder)! You remember the thread where I wanted a kit of the ROG BMW 850i..............well I got one from Gerry and it's beautiful! It came in perfect shape! Thanks to all the rest that replied in helping me find it------now when I'll get a chance to build it is another guess! ....................And since I was thinking out loud in wanting this kit, ROG will probably reissue it. But no matter, I'd buy another as the kit is THAT nice!

George if you wanna go crazy, check out the Bosica Porsche 356 of which I have a kit. It's 1/43 white metal and everything opens on that one. I've had it several years, but it's such a marvelous casting and kit, I find myself just looking at the way the parts are made. Brass doors, hood, and deck lid are just among the many detailed parts in this bugger! eBay has 'em listed from time to time............you'd be amazed how nice that kit is. Also a company out of France called Feeling 43 is well known for their amazing 1/43 detail kits which rival your best super detailed 1/8 scale!

Fujimi Toyota Celica xx 2800gt
MrObsessive replied to forthlin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Also you can check out MPC's version of this car which represents an '82 or '83. I believe it's a Supra though. Nice kit with full engine detail and all and a good interior with great chassis engraving. I've seen them listed on the 'Bay fairly often. -
Sigh.............Another one of my Holy Grails! I've loved this kit ever since I seen one about 5 years ago on eBay and at a show. They are the Fujimi Enthusiast series of 1/43............meaning practically every nut and bolt is included it seems. Superior Models are for us nutty "obsessive" builders for sure! When I can get some more bucks socked away------I'll be lookin' to get one of those! Congrats on a rare find Gregg!

Beautiful!! That could almost pass for "Real or Model" the pics are that good! I like the subtle flames that you made and the stance is right on!
-
Excellent Job as usual Randy! I LOVE that color! That looks good on about anything! I built this kit back in '87 when it was new............I remember the decklids being a bit fiddly. I still have the model but in subsequent years it's been stripped and taken apart. I also picked up a new sealed kit for 20 bucks a few years ago at a show, so they can be had on the cheap if you look hard enough. Raul, the Ferrari Daytona coupe and Spider kits (I have both) give you the chromed wire wheels. They also have the five spoke "star" wheels, but to me they look their best in nice, shiny wire wheels!
-
Congrats Greg! Of course you won something with it......the model is outstanding! Not very many modelers build an accurate body 'Cuda model these days as that kit is kinda hard to get-----that's one of the things that made it a standout!

Wasn't Reliable Resin going to do one via the master that Darin Bastedo did? I haven't heard anymore about it for awhile............it was quite an active thread a while back. In fact check out thread here....... Maybe Don's casting it and I missed the announcement-------It's quite a wanted model!

Real or Model #52 FINISHED!
MrObsessive replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Imagine trying to drive that on a sunny day! -
Thanks for the review Bob!..............And thanks for the heads up about the wheel and tires. That's one of my biggest gripes (along with kit glass) I have with the major kit makers. I know they do it out of cost, but I can't tell you how many kits I wouldn't buy because the wheels and tires are not right. My thought is that can make or break a kit on appearance alone. Maybe if they repeat this enough they'll get it................ Say it with me kit manufacturers........... Proper wheels and tires Proper wheels and tires Proper wheels and tires Proper wheels and tires Proper wheels and tires Got it now? I hope so............
-
That wheel looks great from where I sit---------sometimes you have to "improvise" for timeliness sake. They should suit that just fine! If you don't finish it in time for the show.........just blame it on me, since they all know me they'll understand!

 Yes this was definitely before my Obsessiveness! Indeed, Ismael may have well caught the Obsessive Virus judging by his latest build! Actually this model below is what started the whole super detailing thing................A '65 Shelby GT350 R that I built during 1995-96............ A couple changes I'd do now if building this today, would be making the door window frames out of brass, and using clear stencil sheet for the windows vs. the kit ones which are in it.

Hmmm................I honestly don't remember! I took a look at the engine pics on my hard disc (A LOT bigger resolution than what's here) and I think I might have used Testor's Metalizers back then. I was still years away from knowing about and using Alclad, and I never really cared for Testor's Dullcote at least in bottle form.

Yeah that was in my "India Ink" days! The paint believe it or not was just plain 'ol Model Master Red, airbrushed through a Badger 150. Thinned out with probably their thinner, and waited for what seemed like an eternity to dry, as this was long before I knew about a dehydrator. I do remember rubbing it out with Meguiar's Car Cleaner Wax even then. IIRC, I built this during the summer of '93 so besides the air conditioner in my apartment at the time all I could do was wait!

Thanks Izzy! It took that post I read on another thread to stop and think about some of the ones I've built over the years. One thing I've always liked about this series of 'Vettes from Monogram is how they got the wheels and tires just right! IIRC, AMT had their version out right around the same time----and I was put off of that one because the wheels and tires just didn't look right to me. One inaccuracy of Monogram's ZR-1 is the dash........Seems as though they modeled the prototype which used the 1989 dash as the car was to be intro'd for that model year. Technical difficulties delayed the car until '90 which used the new style dash. Monogram already had the tooling underway I'm sure and didn't want to change it-------so for those that want a really accurate ZR-1, you could use the dash out of the later AMT C4 'Vette's or possibly build the Monogram '95 ZR-1 (yellow car on box art) which I think has the corrected dash. I'm not sure though as I have that kit, but haven't looked at it in years!

Another one I built circa 1993. This Viper is one of two I built during the '90's-----the other one was the coupe which came out around 1994 or so. I don't know what happened to that one as several moves since then has lost a couple models This one was really ratty too, but an hour or so cleanup and reattaching some broken off parts, she's ready to show. One gripe I've always had with these series of kits is the hoods never fit right no matter what you do! Anyway, it's sitting quietly on display now where it won't get lost again. Here she is 15 years later........ ................And I still can't find my '62 Dodge Lancer!
-
Looking at an earlier thread about saving or changing old builds got me to searchin' for a '62 Dodge Lancer I know I have! This is one of those cases of Murphy's Law where you're looking for something-----that item doesn't show up, but the one you weren't looking for does! I came across this '90 Corvette ZR-1 that I built sometime around 1992-93...........I thought it was long gone, but there it was sitting in the bottom inside a model box I forgot I had. It was a bit dusty and kinda scratched up, but I got out my trusty Meguiar's Car Cleaner Wax and chamois cloth and rubbed 'er out good! Needless to say it's in a case where I can keep an eye on it------I can't even remember how long it's been since I've seen this except it's been years! Anyway, I couldn't resist taking pics of it cleaned up now so here we go..................... IIRC I used Model Master Red which was airbrushed out of an Badger 250-----I don't think I even used primer on the body first! So much for how much I knew then! If I were doing this car today, I would use automotive paint as the hobby stuff is a bit weak when it comes to rubbing out and polishing IMO. BTW, I also found a '93 Dodge Viper in the same box.............I remember building that one right after the 'Vette which is why I remember the year. That one didn't fare so well as the windshield is now broken off of it, as well as a mirror and headlight lens. I'm gonna get that one put back together and clean 'er up and post it too. Comments on this old girl welcome!

True! Not to mention simply paying your utilities in your home, electric, phone, having a loan---car or otherwise, etc......they already have tons of info out there on ya! Lets not mention if you've ever paid for anything online, or have an automatic debit for anything............don't necessarily need a credit/debit card-----just your bank info will do.

To Rebuild or Not
MrObsessive replied to James W's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would leave it the way it is. I thought about redoing a few of my old ones, but like you said, it reflects what we knew at the time------so it's kind of a snapshot of what was going on then in our modeling world. Now someone elses glue bomb.......that's another story! Yes there is a ¢ key my friend! (Alt 0162) -
Don't mean to sound ornery.............but that subject was hacked to death months ago here.........
