Another day of building models.
Wagoneer81 replied to DRG's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is great news! I've been thinking hard about your situation and sending you and Cleveland 'good vibes' all day! I'm glad to hear everything and everybody are still in one piece! -
Now that I know which direction I'm going with this build, I've decided to post some pictures. Here's where I am so far. I started weathering the chassis before I finished building it... I'd never worked with acyrlics or weathered a truck before so I was experimenting. I have started roughing up the paintjob as this is going to be an old, used and abused farm truck and trailer. I got the paint a little heavy in places when I painted the trailer and it dried with airpockets under the paint in several places... then the paint chipped away ... Not good for a clean, pretty build but it works out great from a weathering standpoint... makes it easy to show chipped paint with aluminum corrosion under it... So, onward and upward! I'll be finishing this build before I start another so updates should be fairly common... I have a bad habit of not finishing projects that I start and I'm making a concentrated effort to throw off that habit...

Pictures would be great, Justin, Thanks!

Sent off to Valhalla in a column of thick black styrene smoke, eh??? I can think of worse ways to go... I have no children and am divorced but I do have 5 older siblings, 12 nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews... (My entire family knows me as "Uncle Chris") Since my family is rather large and they all have at least a passing appreciation of my hobby and talents, I see my family dividing the collection up and everyone taking several models each that will remind them of Uncle Chris. I just hope that this happens in about 50 years... I still have some living to do!

L-700 Stakebed
Wagoneer81 replied to Wagoneer81's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
... Tandem axle L-series with a shorty steel trailer... you just gave me another project idea! Thanks!!! Here's a few more shots. I made these ramps in the off chance I ever wanted to load a car on and go to the local drag strip...lol And, a right side view... The doors were such a bad fit, I glued them into their final positions... The color is Testors Military Flat Medium Green straight from the rattlecan with a glosscoat. Comments AND constructive critiques are welcome. I can't improve my building skills if I don't know what to improve, if you know what I mean... -
I finished this one over the winter and just recently found my camera so I thought I'd post a few... I stretched the frame two inches and scratchbuilt the bed and stakesides. The signboard will get the decals for the company logo "Stone Leaf Farm" after I replace my printer. And, I still need to add the Grandt-Line Nut-bolt-washer castings to the bed sides... maybe a bit of light weathering as well...

OK Highway, here's my official entry into this build. I'm going to build an Expedited Freight truck. I'm going to combine a Revell W900 and the cargo box/ lift gate from the Ford Louisville Delivery Truck (Thanks to JustBill for that!) I'll stretch the wheel base 2 1/4", leave the twin-screw drive and detail the inside of the cargo box so's to be able to display it with the doors open. I may load it with hotrod parts... frames, bodys, engines, etc... Maybe give me a good reason to clean out some parts boxes... BTW, anyone know how this liftgate goes together??? I've never built one and I could use a scan of that part of the instructions...

Another day of building models.

Donald, that's really crazy! You didn't tell us you were vacationing in Venice! I really feel your pain... Here, this is what I woke up to this morning, in the side yard... I think we got hit by the same system... Luckily, our vehicles are on the other side of the house on the high ground. BTW, there's no creek close to us, this is just pooling, minor compared to what you have, really... I hope you stay safe and that the water doesn't come up any farther. -

Lindberg Charger police car kits
Wagoneer81 replied to 1320wayne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That, right there, will be reason enough for me to buy at least one of these kits... That and I need a cool looking escort vehicle for my "Mobile Incident Command Center"... -
Very nice trailer, I am impressed! I've been following this build and am going to use it as a guide when I build my own corrosives trailer. As for tractor color, anything would work. This trailer is kind of 'industry standard' when it comes to the fleet white paint with the black bands. The way I understand it is that the black areas are there to help hide any evidence of spills which may occur when loading and unloading the trailer, chemical stains don't stand out on black as well as they would on white. The US railroad industry does the same thing on their light colored tank cars. This would be a trailer that any owner-operator or company fleet truck of any color would pull although a tractor about the same shade as the blue lettering or maybe blue with white stripes would tie in nicely with the trailer.

the BISMARCK

Kevin, what kit are you using? I have one in 1/350 and in 1/700 and I'm not familiar with this one, is it the older Revell kit? I look forward to seeing it commissioned! -
Harry, ol' buddy! I see you finally got my motorcycle finished! I await it's delivery with bated breath... All joking aside, that is a beautiful build of my absolute favorite motorcycle. I actually got a chance to ride one several years ago. They're really a blast to ride, a whole lot of fun... Kick start, foot clutch, hand shift, left-hand control is the spark advance... ohh, yeah, no vacuum advance for the timing on this baby... One had his hands full compared to newer DOT standard control bikes. I wasn't even aware that this kit was available... Thanks for bringing this to my attention and for a wonderful build that brought back some very fond memories! One more kit to add to the 'want list'!

Shell Short Hauler
Wagoneer81 replied to Travis Waits's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Ok, I'm out of the loop here... First, Very nice old Ford, great build, a wonderful tribute to your Father. I've always had a soft spot for the old fat fendered F-series. My Chevy loving friends will tell me that that soft spot is between my ears but, ohh well... My question is this and please excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject; Who is Evan and how does one go about contacting him to place an order for these fenders, grille and bumper? I want a set! Does he have a website? address? Telescope for spotting smokesignals? Sorry, meds talking there... -
Good luck to our northern neighbors
Wagoneer81 replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've not seen one in pink before, I think one of the releases was molded in red... Mine did start life as the 'Pink Poison' kit but it was molded in white. I made the wagon top struts from brass rod and the canvas cover from tissue and diluted white glue. I do hate to hear that you had to part with that Cherokee. but, it's understandable. I've had several offers on mine but won't sell. I've heard too many former Full Size Jeep owners say that they wish they had kept theirs... Mine is actually my daily driver. It doesn't just come out when the weather's bad. You're friend's getting hit pretty hard by this storm. Here, it's still sleeting. There's about three inches of sleet in the drive and the wind is still raising Caine. -

Zipper, I love the J-10 model! When I bought it back in '05, my Wagoneer was in as rough a condition as your Cherokee is. lotsa TLC, some sheetmetal, a roll of fluxcore wire for the welder and Dad and I rebuilt another one! You oughta find someone that knows their way around a welder, or teach yourself to weld like I did, pick up some 22ga sheet metal for the body and some 16ga for the clutch linkage mounts and put her back together. Trust me brother, it can be done. My '81 is proof of that. That Cherokee CAN be saved! Ohh, here's my first take on the Revell kit... -

Andy, That's a good looking old chevy. Try putting 200-300 pounds of sandbags or salt pellet bags in the bed over the rear axles (and keep your foot out of it unless you really need the extra power ) ... Worked like a charm on my 2wd trucks, should work wonders for yours. That's part of the whole weight distribution thing with the wagon body that I was talking about in the above thread. Trucks are really light in the rear because the only weight over the rear tires is the bed. They need extra weight back there to compensate for that. Weather update: The wind has picked up, I'd say 15mph sustained with 25mph gusts and the sleet is coming down pretty heavy now. If the power goes, I'll see you all when it comes back on! -
Model Cars Magazine #154
Wagoneer81 replied to TOYCARTEC's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just want to ease in here and make a few observations... To me, it's a matter of perspective, i.e. what's really important, what's really worth getting into a snit and wasting valuable energy in getting angry and fretting over a late magazine. I consider myself to be the luckiest person in the world. Why? Because I live in a country that has free press! It could be much MUCH worse, how much, Google 'North Korea' or 'China' if you want to see the worst. These protests in the Egypt and the Middle East? People are tired of not having a say, they're tired of being without, they don't have such wonderful goodies as MCM and this forum, they're lucky they're not starving to death, well, many of them are... If a person can rant, rave and throw a fit because their model magazine is late, I have this to say to them: You ARE the luckiest person in the world! If this is the only thing you have to worry about, and it has to be, otherwise why would a logical, intelligent person put this much effort into getting upset over a late magazine?... if this is the biggest issue that you have to be concerned with, then I want your life because NOTHING is going wrong and you obviously have nought to worry about! Well done in gaining that level of control over your life! Right now, I'm in a similar boat as our fearless leader, Gregg. My hat's off to you, Kaikua'ana (Hope my translation is right, that's supposed to be 'brother'!), as I wouldn't have the wherewithal to keep following through with the magazine and forum as you have. My back is destroyed AND I suffer from an auto-immune disorder that causes my immune system to ATTACK and destroy my connective tissues and muscle structure. I can go down Greggs' list and check of most of the items and issues he listed... I know what it's like to get out of bed, take two steps, scream like a little girl and pee yourself on the way to the floor because the pain is that intense! Right now, I consider myself blessed to be able to get to the hobby shop and come home with the latest issue of MCM, regardless of how 'late' that issue might be. I'll be living relatively high on the hog when I can scrape together enough money to buy a subscription! In closing, I'm not trying to start a flame war or anger anybody or leave anyone with hard feelings and this is not aimed at any one particular party. All I want to do is to give a little perspective. I'm not trying to make the Magazine seem unimportant because, to me it is important BUT, if it's a bit late, so be it. you can't sweat the small stuff. Out of all the forums I have visited, this is by far my favorite. It does feel like family. I asked JustBill a while back if he had plans for the cargo box and lift gate off of the Louisville that he is currently converting to a rollback, that was all I asked... He said, "I have no plans for them, if you want them, send me your address and I'll send them to you." I had never talked one-on-one to this man before and he simply gave me the parts! Didn't even ask me to cover postage. I have blood relations that wouldn't do that for me... So yes, it does feel like a big extended family here. Gregg, Keep doing what you're doing. You are in my prayers, things will improve. Thanks for the space to vent! -

And I'm laughing right with ya! This also goes for people with cars and SUV's equipped with traction control and AWD, just because you can run that fast doesn't mean you should... One still has to be able to STOP! Remember folks, in nasty, icy, snowy conditions, slow and steady wins the race!
