Need Advice From Resin Casters Here
raildogg replied to raildogg's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Heck no shucky, I got sick of failures. In my time I've made several thousand industrial two part urethane, multiple parting molds for items from machine gun triggers, to jet engine compressor vanes, and everything in between. It's failures I can't stand!. If I didn't need the flexibility of the mold, for the tread and spoke patterns, I'd make hard mold. It's what I know, I do, best!!! -

So Just because I'm a little confused here, although I don't think I should be, let me get this straight. Because I'm stubborn and want to do this for myself. I should mix , one teaspoon Vaseline, with four ounces naphtha, for my release agent and brush it on the parting line. I will get 99% success rate with part off using this mixture. I will try that later this week, because buying the wheels wnd tires I need will cost too much for this or any other project I have in mind. I will try this. Thank you for the formula Art. -
I sometime use a flashlight at about 10 degrees of the plane of the floor. It catches the edge of the parts almost immediately and shows a pretty profile of the piece and, bob's your uncle, there it is!

Still no reply from price driscoll, guess that's a dead end along with the other two mfg.'s. I quit and give in. I used up the last of my just purchased silicone, waxed the parting line and it still stuck together, this is insanity!!! O.K. I call uncle and surrender, I'm through trying. This has major impact on my scratch building plans, as most of the models I want to build have specialized tire, wheel combinations not commercially available, or perpetually out of stock, IE Sauerkraut's Shop. I guess I'll have to stick to kits and O.O.B. models. BUMMER!!!!!!!! -
Re Tire Question I need HELP
raildogg replied to raildogg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ben, how can I get the ten lug, two hole model? Is the smallest one, the one in the lower left hand corner, on tires that have a scale max. outside diameter of 30-31.00". It's the tire dimensions that are important. Please send information as to how to purchase them. Thank you very much, Ben you just, may have saved, my efforts from the dust bin!!! -
I want to build one of those neat widening trailers, seen in this form from Hessel . But I can't seem to locate any 17.5" scale rims or tires for it. Using a larger American type wheel tire set just messes up the geometry of the whole thing. Hessel got his 3D printed so I can't use his source, there isn't one. Anyone know about a place to buy these. I would do the same as Hessel but my graphics card isn't good enough to render a complete tire stl. file. I've gone through about $150.00 of resin and silicone, in completely unsuccessful attempts at making molds, I've even lost the master for them. I need some help I don't care if they are in Europe either!

Shucky, that's exactly what I did, I hope to get some action from Price Driscoll soon as I requested a sample. If I don't hear from them I'll just order a can and be done with it. Thank you -

I have sent emails to smppth-on but they can't get past the fraud detection on my system. I know it has to do with the release so I am going to go back my tried and true Minwax Brown Polishing Wax. I used it for years in the pattern shops I've worked in and, it never failed me. I use it straight from the can, either brushed on or applied with a cotton rag, then polished to a sheen. It's always worked before so it should work now. -

Guys I used the mold release between pours. The time interval between applying the release and pouring the second half was the time it took to mix 4 tbs. of silicone rubber and complete the pour, approx. 90 sec. The one thing I was sure to do was apply release. -

Oh yes I did use the release agent before I poured the silicone onto the first half. The product I used is Huron Technologies Inc. High Performance Silicone Mold Release. The can also says in contains no chlorinated solvents. I just ordered the rubber from Alimilite this week so it should be good. I sent them an email citing my issues. O.K. I emailed those guys and requested a sample of the stuff Greg uses. Now lets see if they send it. I did most of the stuff you did Greg to get good results and still left something out. I';ll try again if I get the release, if not I'll use what I always used for industrial two part urethane, good old bowling alley wax. -
O.K. I got me an Alumilite Molding Silicone Rubber Kit and made a mold. It failed, again. I made a box sprayed it with a release agent and poured the first half. It cured as expected. After De-molding I again, sprayed the mold, and poured the second half. The result, after the instructed curing interval was, it stuck to itself. I had to tear it apart and, of course, lose the whole thing. The part was a model tire. What the hell did I do wrong. I followed all the instructions, all the normal steps. This is not my first time around the dance floor. I used to make two part urethane molds for sand cast foundries, very successfully I might add, so I'm familiar with molding. Any ideas as to what went wrong, I just wasted a weekends work and $50.00 on junk, HELP

Detailing & Why
raildogg replied to MoparWoman Jamie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I model by the motto, "don't detail what you can't see". When I was a active model railroader it was the club mantra. Too many rivet counters already! -

O.K. I started a real donnybrook about tractors and truck stuff here so here's my latest deal. I recently went looking to find, and purchase, some 1/25 scale chain load binders in country. I came up wanting and disappointed.!! What gives, are there any on shore vendors anymore?. If this is the case, IMHO, no wonder it's hard for our guys to update their sites, they just don't care, period. I admit to a lack of web search titling abilities, when looking for stuff. So can anyone point me to an onshore PayPal using vendor for chain binders.?? I've even taken to having some wheel rims I was unable to locate 3D printed, instead of buying them from a vendor.

O.K. Thanks guys just wanted to lower the count.

I'd like to delete some of my posts, the ones I have had answered and are no longer relevant, how do I do that. Shouldn't we have a FAQ topic for just these types of questions?

This is in regards to trailer tire set up. What is the spacing between dual tires on trailers?. What is the spacing for drive wheels on the tractor?. Say a tire set of 215 75 R 17.5. I may have to make my own sets for an upcoming build and it would be good to know so I can set up a mold to make them. Thank you

I need some help guys. Building a widening trailer and, I want to find a source for these type, size, scale wheel and tires. 1/25th Scale 215 75 R17.5 and 10 stud wheels to go with them. Approximate scale size, I think is 32 mm O.D. ?. I will even go to offshore sites for them. So any help you can give will be appreciated

Unsafe paint booth fans - "prove it"
raildogg replied to Der Bugmeister's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Would an industrial accident be O.K. I made the mistake of going in a paint booth with a cup full of nitro-cellulose for a guitar body. Started up the fans began spraying and, BAM, BAM, WHOOSH. The whole thing lit up like a 4th of July display. I was thankfully blown right out into the next room slightly singed and woozy. So believe it when they say it, It's true Bro!!
