Wish round 2 would release some obscure stuff
oldcarfan replied to jeffp60's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
As for trucks, I'd love to see the Revell 1/24th Unimog released in a more budget friendly price, especially the Dakar racing version. And I'm glad to see their VW Eurovan back as a Westfalia, but I really want the flat top panel version. I have one of that and I'd like a few more. Maybe even tool up a pickup body for it? As for AMT, how about their 55-57 Chevy pickup done as a GMC version? -
As for a real driver, I'd love to have a first generation International Scout that wasn't rusted out. For a kit, there are a lot I'd like to build, but I do wish AMT would redo their International Scout with a corrected hood and grille and then maybe tool up a nice first gen kit as a companion. I'd also like someone to tool up a Ford Transit, both the smaller Connect and the full-size van, and also the Mercedes van as either a plastic or diecast kit. They could be produced as basic empty vans for delivery vans and also as a camper version. They could also be licensed to companies as marked delivery vans for collectors.

What did you see on the road today?
oldcarfan replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Love it. Now if only Revell could be persuaded to tool up a new body for their Westfalia van! -
Maybe someday they'll tool up a GMC front end and tailgate so I can do the Riggs' dually from the second movie!

I really hope Ollie's makes a move here in Texas. I've heard they have three here, but I'm not driving 4 hours to find out. LOL

Thanks, I've got several of the Revell kit and only one of the Tamiya so answer helps a lot!

This looks great! I wonder if this conversion requires the Tamiya Beetle or if the Revell or Polar LIghts kits work as well?

I haven't ordered from Model Roundup in a long time, so maybe I missed something. I tried to order yesterday and I thought it had the option to pay by credit card or via PayPal. I wanted to use my CC so I put the information in and at checkout it told me they were unable to draw the funds via PayPal even though I'd checked CC. Do they only accept PayPal now or did I do something wrong? Any ideas?

Hunting Car Anyone?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here's some more! Some of these pics are from Hagerty, they auctioned a couple of these that were restored. Probably other ranches had similar setups, but I know the King ranch did deer and quail hunts out of these vehicles. I especially like the black and white picture because I can imagine some guy using a clapped up old jalopy and some wood he had laying around to make his own hunting vehicle. -
Hunting Car Anyone?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually I do, just forgot to post it. Sorry, guys. I'll look around and see if I can find any more. -
Growing up in South Texas not far from King Ranch I remember seeing these hunting cars every once in a while. Thought someone might like to make a project of it. They also used cut up Jeep Wagoneers and Suburbans and other things like that. Anyway, just thought it might be food for thought.

Thanks, guys, I was pretty sure I'd seen something like that, but the local Walmart didn't have it. Now I know where to look! Before I forget, a side bar. If you're using lacquer based putty and have to strip the body, Purple Cleaner and all those will also strip the putty so if you've done a lot of body work with that, be aware.

I like JDM and Euro stuff. Particularly outlaw Porsche stuff and the kind of things you might see on Japanese street racers. I've ordered some resin stuff from Scale Production, USCP, SpotModel, and it's great stuff, but I'm sure there are other places to order from as well. Is there a list somewhere?

Magnus Walker “277” Porsche 911
oldcarfan replied to PowerPlant's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You'd think Fujimi could do a parts box mashup and issue a licensed 277 kit with the decals and everything. They should have the tools to make this car without a lot of trouble. I think Walker has run this car with and without a ducktail lid, but I can't remember for sure. I bought the rally 73 RS and the Testor's boxing of the regular 73 RS and the decals from China but now I have to get the motivation to do something. -
Do you also have 1:1 project cars?
oldcarfan replied to ctruss53's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is my project, my dad's 1985 Toyota. It hasn't run in ten years but is rust free. Was going to be a summer project until we started having weeks of 105 temperatures. Maybe it can wait for October. -
I prefer using EverCoat or Bondo two part fillers over lacquer based tube putties, but I don't use enough to make it worth buying a whole can. For some reason I remember there being a two part filler that came in a tube kind of like Tamiya putty but with a smaller tube of activator. No idea of what brand it could have been. I can't find mention of it anywhere, so am I just imagining it?

Applying Stickers - Not Decals But Stickers
oldcarfan replied to showrods's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If it works like 1:1 stickers, maybe you apply them over a light spray of water and squeegee them down? -
I posted on another topic, but there is an Amazon JP that has really good prices on JDM kits but with high shipping. Does anyone know if they combine shipping to save money if you order several kits? I bought a Nissan Silvia from them for $14 plus shipping.
-
Probably so, I apologize.

It's actually staffed by overworked, underpaid people trying to stay alive as quotas get raised.

What was your first model car?
oldcarfan replied to Kit Karson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not sure, but I remember a bunch of Palmer kits my uncle gave me and an old Meyer's Manx multi kit. That was the first one I built on my own. I wanted to make the most of it so all the extra parts just got glued all over the place. I wasn't allowed to paint anything because my mom knew I'd make a mess. -
How do I save this, or how do I strip and restart?
oldcarfan replied to Milo's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
For me, I usually strip the paint and start again if I'm not happy with the paint job. As a rule, the prep work is almost more important than the actual paint. I have built several and missed mold lines or scratches and not seen them until after the paint was done. I'd say maybe dunk it in the purple pond and try again if you're not happy with the results. The other option is to try to wet sand or polish the paint.
