Renault Estafette service van
oldcarfan replied to dougwintz's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
You did a good job with that clear body. Is that a 1/24th kit? I've never seen it before. I may have to look for one! -
Your build looks great! I have two of this kit in the stack, waiting for inspiration. Glad to hear it builds up well.

Kits you can't seem to have enough of.
oldcarfan replied to Sledsel's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My all time gotta buy more model is the Monogram Porsche 911 curbside kit. I know it's not highly detailed nor does it have a lot of parts, but I like it. I scoured eBay for them and managed to get 10 or so. I've built about 6 of them in the last few years and since recently restarting my building, I have another on the bench. -
What did you see on the road today?
oldcarfan replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Familiarity doesn't make this thing look any better. I really feel for the engineers who had to make this thing semi-viable. -
I made a trip south to Austin and had a chance to stop at the last HobbyTown in the area. The one thing I really wanted? They had it! I found my Italeri Gelandewagen kits and wanted this one to go with them. It'll be a while before I get around it, but I have an ICON style upgrade thing I want to try. They turn old vehicles into very cool, very expensive, Resto-mods. https://www.icon4x4.com/

I've got the Integra and the I think I have the Civic Coupe kit somewhere. Not a tuner, but I also have the Acura NSX snap kit Revell put out. That's another kit I wish they'd put out again.

A great build and a nice kit that I wish Tamiya would release again!

There was a conversion set made for a while back in the early 2000s(?) that turned the AMT kit into the GMC equivalent pickup truck. If I remember, it was a small kitchen table company making it and GM sent them a letter telling them to cease and desist. Somewhere, I have this set or a knock-off that I got at a hobby show. I set it aside for another day and lost track.

What would YOU like to see as a model
oldcarfan replied to JeroenM3's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Are they planning some new tools? I wouldn't say no to street stock kits, maybe the 80s era Monte Carlos and other G bodies that used to be so common. Ministocks would be cool too. Pintos, and VW bugs used to race at our local track and were a lot of fun to watch. As far as rereleases they may do, I don't build anything but 1/24th-1/25th kits, but I do have a soft spot for Revells old 1/32nd dragsters and van models. If they have any more of the 1/25th Funny cars or Pro Stocks, those would be appreciated. -
Yes, I have one I got at AnimeCon a couple of years ago. Don't know what brand it is because it's in Japanese! It's a super fine tip and I used it on the seats and on the body panels.

This is my Honda Civic Hatchback, built from the old Revell Tuner series kit. I just posted a short buildup on WIP and here are my pictures of the finished kit. This is my first build in a few years as my wife and I bought a 100 year old small rock house and spent 3 years making it a home. The bonus for me was that it included a large metal building next door. I just turned a corner of that into a hobby room and this the first product of that. It looked really nice to my tired eyes, but seeing it now in closeup pictures I can see the mistakes. Oh well, them's the breaks! The trim detailing is mostly Sharpie and fine line Japanese marker. The head and tail lights on this kit are very well done, the buckets being chrome and the lenses being molded in clear. I did the taillights in red and orange Sharpie on the backsides of the and outlined the edges of all the lenses in black Sharpie which I think gives them a nicely finished look. The driving light area in the lower bumper is gunmetal paint with the lenses done in Blue Sharpie. The wheels and tires are from XS Tuning as I didn't care for the tuner options that come with the kit. That's about it for this build. This is a really well designed kit in my opinion. It comes with three sets of tuner wheels and a set of rubber band style tires. It also comes with a parts to almost do a stock EK Civic hatchback along with tuner style front and rear bumpers. I do wish Revell would rerelease it with a set of stock steel wheels to give us a total stock building option. That's all for now, hope you like it.

This is the body and chassis ready for assembly. It's strange, but the two are held together with four screws. The paint on the body came out very smooth which was as much a surprise to me as to anyone. I didn't care for any of the wheel/tire combinations that came with the kit. They were typical for their time, but I'm not a fan of the rubber band type tires. I dug around until I found the box with aftermarket tires and wheels and settled on these which I think are the perfect ones for this little Civic. They are from XS Tuning and I got them in a lot of stuff years ago on eBuy. As near as I can tell, the wheels are around 18" or 19". Not caring for the Chrome finish, I soaked them in bleach and resprayed them in Rustoleum bronze. The tires are still low profile, but look much better to my way of thinking. This is the last of this 'Build-up' as I am going to post the finished pictures in a few minutes. I realize that most people do their builds posts as they work, but I wasn't planning to do this, so I hope it will be interesting to those who like this type of car. Stay tuned for the finished pictures.

Also I forgot to mention the engine. It is nicely done by Revell and I painted it with some Duplicolor gunmetal grey that I had left over from my 1:1 Volvo. The header is painted with Krylon Aluminum with a dull coat over it, and the valve cover is painted with the same red I used on the seats. The air filter is painted flat white. I also carved out the lower grille on the stock front end. I was going to do the upper grille as well, but didn't want to risk messing it up so I outlined it and painted the area black.

This is the interior partially assembled. I painted it with Tamiya Italian red, on a day that was way too hot and humid for October. That explains why it dried sort of flat and sort of hazy. As it turned out, I think it ended up making the upholstery look more realistic. After the parts were dry, I masked off the rear seat which is molded to the floorpan, and also masked off parts of the side panels, and then painted those in Walmart Flat Black. In a spark of brilliance, (Sarcasm), I bought a jar of black embossing powder from Hobby Lobby to do the carpets. Not sure it's the best way, but I painted the carpet area and the rear hatch cover with flat black craft paint and then dusted the wet paint with the embossing powder. I think it turned out pretty nice! As with the body, I used the fine-line marker to outline the seat and side panel details.

Forgive me as this is my first attempt at a build up post. I recently finished my hobby room and started unpacking some boxes of kits. I came across a box with some bagged kits and pulled one out. It was the Revell EK Honda Civic that they released as part of their early 2000s Tuner Lineup. This bag actually had three complete unbuilt Civic kits. I also found one that has their Acura Integra kit. Don't know where I got them, but probably from a show years ago. Sorry for not taking more pictures, but I got carried away with the build and just plain forgot. I hope this will be of interest as I think these are nice kits and deserve to be reissues, maybe updated with stock wheels? Not caring for the, in my opinion, cheesy aftermarket body kits, I was happy to see that most of the parts are there to do a stock Civic except the wheels. I decided to build this one like a friend tried to do to his 1:1 car back in the day. He wanted a subtle JDM sort of look and so do I. The Revell Tuner kits I've seen are well molded and reminiscent of Japanese designed kits of the time. The parts trees were separtely wrapped and car was taken to make sure the glass in particular was protected. The fit is good, and the mold lines are not too prominent and it didn't take a lot of prep to be ready of paint. This picture shows the body after painting with Tamiya Racing White, which is a slightly off-white. At first I thought maybe the paint was bad, due to the age of the can, but people asured me it was supposed to be that color, and I really like it. After it was dry, I masked off the engine bay and painted it with semi-gloss black from an Ace Hardware can. The rest of the black trim is done in a combination of Sharpie and a fine-line marker I got at an Anime Con in Dallas years ago.

Best lamborghini countach kit
oldcarfan replied to randx0's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I prefer the Monogram kit, even though the Fujimi kit may be more accurate. The only thing I wish Revell would do is to add a front wing, some aftermarket driving lights, and a 12 outlet exhaust so we could do a 'from the box' rendition of that famous movie Countach! -
What would YOU like to see as a model
oldcarfan replied to JeroenM3's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I posted earlier about wanting a nice E39 chassis BMW, and I would also like to add that I'd like to see a nice, accurate E30 chassis as well. And while I like Revell's E21 320i, I wish there were a nice 1/24th kit of that too. At the least, I wish Revell would retool the front grill area as the headlights look too small for the rest of the car. Maybe it's just me. Also I wouldn't say no to an accurate mid 80s MB 190E, either. While I'm asking, I'd ask again for Round Two to give us the AMT Chevy Van with the optional window van option. That would make the PRDAs Cannonball contender, and they could add Open Road Camper top for another issue, and also give us a backdated early 70s version of the MPC Dodge van with a window option as well. I'd really like to do an accurate Cannonball Ambulance! Maybe they could also do an later 1997-ish Dodge Van so I could do a Dajiban. -
Great! Now there's another Porsche I have to find at the hobby shows. Just kidding, nice build and I love what you're doing.
-
I love what you're doing here! My dad told me a lot of Italian, German, and British exotic cars ended up with American transplants when they became obsolete for front line sports car competition. I'm currently looking for one of my dad's old 1970s builds that had a similar idea. He used the Lindberg D-Type Jaguar and opened it up to put a Chevy engine in it. The idea was based on an E-Type that a friend raced and then blew the engine up on. Not being able to afford a new engine, he pulled a junkyard smallblock Chevy out of a wrecked Impala, put it in and went back to racing.
-
I bought a couple of 'new' 1974 MPC kits a few years ago that came in shrink wrap with Woolworth's price stickers still on them so I guess they started that some time in the early 70s? As far as the internals, they started bagging them at least as far back as the late 70s I think. Edit: They still put the tires in loose as far back as the 90s. I think they started bagging tires and clear parts when they offshored the kit making to China.
-
As a little kid, I used to read this massive stack of 70s-80s Car & Drivers that my dad had in the junk room. I loved this car so much. I imagined myself with one of these and a Countach as my daily drivers. I wish there were a 1/24th kit or diecast available at a decent price!

The Future of Revell...for 2024 at least.
oldcarfan replied to niteowl7710's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I didn't notice the Jeep was the 1/24th kit. I'll need to get one of those too. And the military Blazer might make a good kit for Revell to release sometime in the future. They could tool up a small tree with the military specific parts and put it out as a new kit. That would be cool!
