Three River Automodelers Show and Contest.
niteowl7710 replied to 3riverfan's topic in Contests and Shows
Been going to this show since I was "old" enough to still be in the Junior Class It's sort of my "home" show in that way, and I'll be there again this year, maybe actually finish something to enter this time around... -
Where can I find PlastiKote primer?
niteowl7710 replied to Austin T's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I bought several cans recently at Ollie's for a buck-fifty a piece, seems they got a bunch of them when they pushed out the little cans of DupliColor from the NAPA Warehouse in Denver. -

Revell '50 Oldsmobile Club Coupe 2'n1

That's just the auto-fill USPS Estimated Delivery Date. If you bought one today AND it was actually in stock... -
Unless you're building a specific replica of their PR car from that year, it has to be a slicktop. MISP quickly found out the roof on the 1st Gen Chargers wasn't braced sufficiently to support that beacon in it's old halogen spotlight bulbed glory. The current Charger can and does come with a beacon as the roof is "stiffer", and the guts on those beacons is all LEDs.

What Revell should put out as Kits...
niteowl7710 replied to TheCat's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the guide on HLJ says each additional kit is something like 40% of the original shipping price, so it's like $12-14 for the first one and 5 bucks thereafter because FedEx charges by volume, not weight, so the bulkier the package the more it costs. Ironically it's probably cheaper to send a stack if Encyclopedias. On the Revell front...the no brainers would be... '13 Camaro ZL1 '13 Mustang GT (then I bet we get the 302/Laguna as Fall Release like they did you're '11 GT & Shelby) '70 Charger Nascar/Drag version of the '50 Olds '72 Olds 442 with a roof Be interesting to see if that long rumored '56 Ford redeux, and '92 Mustang LX/SSP make an appearance next month. The two obvious modified reissues from Revell AG are the Spyder/Convertible versions of the SLS AMG and 458 Italia. I'd also expect a kit of the F12, and maybe the upcoming F-70, although that latter one is probably is Tamiya domain considering their Enzo & FXX kits. Then whatever kit from Tamiya's 80's Masterpiece series they decide is next....maybe the Morgan or Jaguar those have been OOP for awhile. -

I dunno Casey the EB 110 was an odd (and not particularly attractive) car from a company that I think most people in the U.S. associate with pre-war luxury and race car heritage. Considering the old Bugatti went under in '63 and the Italian re-birth in the '90's was short-lived, and the fact the kit is from the era where Revell AG kits required a Marine battalion and tactical battle plan to build, it's not a surprise it didn't fare so well. But I'm willing to bet the vast majority of people know the Bugatti we have today as owned by VW. They make the fastest, most expensive road car, and convertible. Even people who aren't into cars still know what a Veyron is, what other car costs over a million bucks for the "base" model? -

niteowl7710 replied to TheCat's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I noticed hence my mention of my FedEx guy...I've never seen Revell make anything that I needed so bad it had to be FedEx'd to me...orders from Japan on the other hand... On the Aston Martin front, heck I'd take just about anything you want to make...I have Tamiya's DBS, but I'd take a One-77, DB9 (I mean it is "DB9 Sub-Zero Fridge" Cool after all), the new '12 Vanquish too. But I think I'd be particularly jumpy around FedEx trucks for a V12 Zagato...and heck you could make a Vantage out for the same basic tooling! -

WHOA! You still use your check book register? Man doesn't your bank offer some sort of online banking? It's so much easier to track your register that way since everything you do with your debit card is instantly added, and you can see your account in real time. Which shows you how many places put Memos on your account for no discernible reason. I hate writing checks for bills, in addition to wasting a stamp, and having to drive to the post office (we have a P.O. Box) there's the whole part of it actually getting there, and them cashing it. The only bill I can't pay online is our sewer and they're renown for hanging onto checks for 2-3 WEEKS before they deposit them. -

Not saying I wouldn't buy a '68 Dodge, but I would tackle my FedEx guy at the end of my driveway to get a BMW M3 & M5 in my hands faster. I'd meet him on the porch for the other 3. Gotta say (and I think the informal numbers here would back me up) the one Supercar we'd all like to see kitted would be the Buggati Veyron. -
I saw those on FB this morning, it's actually pretty interesting how tossing some Weds Sports on fatter tires and painting it black make it look so much more bad...ahhh sinister that's the ticket! I'm anxiously awaiting the release at the end of the month. I see the 101 doesn't have the spoiler and comes with a manual tranny option, the 100 is a "run of the mill" 86 has the spoiler but an automatic.

Ford Van... imported from Turkey!
niteowl7710 replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They'll probably import the cargo version from Turkey and build the passenger version in Kansas City, since there's that whole weird "Chicken Tax" thing about building passenger vans overseas and then shipping them to the United States. -
HLJ is pre-saling the Aoshima kits for $28.58
-
It would cost somewhere between $8 & 15 depending on how fast you want it sent to you. Very rarely is any place going to be able to match the price including shipping on a new JDM kit. Something older, then maybe, depending on the exchange rate. I bought a Tamiya 911 GT-3 at a hobby shop because it was $2 cheaper than HLJ, but they wanted $25 more than I paid for my LFA including International FedEx shipping.

Granted but you did see people in this thread who expected a new tool, and believed that Chip is so devoted to his "art" that he wouldn't sign-off on some half-witted attempt at one of his cars. He might be the nicest guy in the world, but that doesn't absolve him of the desire to promote his brand and make money while doing it. Wonder what his cut of sales are/upfront fee was? They will not be "new" tires anyway, they'll be the same ole-same ole Cali Wheel tires, Revell doesn't have the ability to create new tires...or so you'd think. -
Future Freightliner?
niteowl7710 replied to BigBad's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It might have more application than you'd expect. More and more companies are focusing on a more Regionalized approach to their freight hauling. In either soliciting more "medium haul" freight (550 miles or less) or relaying "long haul" freight through several operation centers between several drivers to get it across the country. You consider the two largest trucking fleets don't need sleepers at all (UPS & FedEx). Wal*Mart has tailored their private fleet as well as their 3PL grocery haulers to operate in a radius of less than 300 miles from the Distribution Center. If my car got better mileage and/or I lived closer to the D.C. I could go home everyday, my loads are out and back, and if I didn't HAVE to sleep in the truck, I wouldn't need a sleeper either. Not gonna say I mind my Cascadia Condo though... Plus you have to take into consideration a whole new "generation" of what we call "White Collar Truckers" that have been coming into the industry. These are people who didn't select driving as a vocation like some of us. I got my CDL Permit the day after my 21st B-Day, and was OTR at Werner a month later. But rather people who are finding trucking because it's steady employment after being laid off from corporate jobs. These people don't want to be out for 3 weeks at a time, they don't want to sleep in trucks, they don't want to fight for parking spots in truck stops. Hence more and more "Be home weekly, be home daily" type of operations are being foisted on us guys who enjoy racking up the "Tall Miles". My family situation (the fact that new little members keep being added) has forced me into a more hometime operation, but believe you me I'd love to hit the road again once all these rug-rats hit 18. I kind of wonder if Long Haul OTR operations will still exist then. -

Does Anyone Stash Paint?
niteowl7710 replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
While I am by no means a paint expert, I will say that paint I've had for the 15 year "layoff" from the hobby that I kept with a small portion of my collection I that was in a temperature controlled situation fared far better than all the rest of the cans/bottles that spent 7 years in a non-climate controlled storage locker subject to freezing and summer heat. All of my paint now is kept in my basement which even in the summer never seems to get above 70 degrees (being below grade probably has something to do with that -- it's built into the hillside rather than just being a hole dug in the ground), plus I keep a dehumidifier running at least part of the time in to keep the humidity of this summer out as well. -
Aoshima 2012 Nissan GTR R35 w/engine

Considering the "E" in edition isn't capitalized. Also my other personal favorite, any reasonably stock Fujimi automotive kit is part of the "Inch Up" Series... -
Aoshima 2012 Nissan GTR R35 w/engine
niteowl7710 replied to martinfan5's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I think it's just one of those "lost in translation" things. Just like most Aoshima car kits are part of the "Best Car GT" series and no matter what the subject any non-racing vehicle (and a handful of racing cars come to think of it) from Tamiya are part of the "Sports Car" series. Nothing really all that sporty about a Citroen, Morris Cooper or a stock VW Beetle... -
There's a big difference between accuracy and ease of assembly and "engineered your ears off and 500 immaculate, yet impossible to assemble pieces". I bring up Tamiya repeatedly for a reason, even the curbside stuff (like the Porsche Boxter) is well engineered, looks dead-on when assembled, and they have that whole "Shake 'n Bake" reputation for pouring paint and glue in the box and the thing assembles itself while you make a sandwich. But then I've had conversations with people here back when the chat room was around who told me that didn't like kits like that because they're "too easy" and they want a challenge...My answer still remains unchanged, l don't want to engage in hand-to-hand combat with my models, more over I don't find it satisfying/exciting to have to fix an Army of problems (yes I'm looking at you Moebius), that shouldn't be there in the first place. If you gotta charge $25 to hire competent engineers and tool makers, so be it.

Does Anyone Stash Paint?
niteowl7710 replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't know if you'd call it a paint "stash", but I have a bad habit of always finding a need for those little cans of DupliColor when they go on sale at Ollies (they are again right now as it happens). For 59 cents you can't go wrong. Bet I have over 100 cans at this point, but that's still a few hundred shy of matching a can of paint to every kit I own... -
Something else that factors into this is that it's not 1982 anymore. All the things you need to be passionate about something are just a Google search away. Take the '62 Vette that's coming out. Back in "the day" unless you knew someone with the car, one of the magazines did an article on it, or you saw it at Corvettes at Carlisle (or similar 1:1 show), you might never really know enough about it to know or care about the car and subsequently the kit and how accurate it is or isn't. Now there are probably a half dozen Corvette forums, probably one dedicated to the '62 era model, and literally thousands of photos and reams of technical data available at the end of your mouse pointer. The same goes for every 1:1 car out there. Not caring (which is fine if that's your position) isn't the same as not knowing. Cripes typing these posts on my phone is murder, makes me look like a blithering idiot until I can spell check it once it's posted.
