Modified "Yellow fever" Drag Truck

I love the creativity! Rule book? We don't need no stinkin' rule book! WF -
I believe that those photos were taken at a non sanctioned track. Tech inspection is usually not that serious when there is no sanctioning body or state police to worry about. WF

Great car! Cool details too! WF

What cars are you looking under? Certainly not cars that have to pass a NHRA technical inspection. As far as the pole vaulting thing goes, back in 1964 at L.I.'s Westhampton dragstrip a Max Wedge car called The Mad Russian broke the front u-joint at speed. The car literally "pole vaulted" into the woods that lined the track. The car was a total wreck and everything was retrieved except the torque converter. WF

I don't remember Dick as much of a potty mouth, but Shirley? Oh my, she could make me blush and I'm a native New Yorker who has worked in the auto repair industry for most of my life. Dick was an incredibly nice guy whom I befriended when he drove my road runner at L.I. Dragway in 1993. I'm the tall one on the left. My friend, Top Fuel Tony, looks like he could have been one of Landy's kin. WF P.S. Now that we have thoroughly hijacked this thread.........back to Niko's Nova.

Terry is a geezer like me. He was around when Stockers didn't have roll bars, and no helmets were required, and you could wear shorts and flip flops while racing! WF
-
Ummm don't try to confuse the kid! I do believe that he knows the rules quite well. You absolutely are allowed to remove the rear seat in a Stock Eliminator car if you install a roll bar. It is also allowable to trim the leading and trailing edge of the wheel openings a maximum two inches for tire clearance. WF (SFI tech inspector and 1:1 Stock Eliminator racer)

Nostalgic Super Stock/Pro Stock Hemi questions.
6bblbird replied to W-409's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
You don't have to use the twin plug set-up. Even Sox & Martin didn't always use it. Aside from being a pain in the a$$ to wire, It doesn't always look so good. In addition, you may spend a lot of time trying to do good job only to find that the hood does not close when you are done! Ask me how I know! WF -
Nostalgic Super Stock/Pro Stock Hemi questions.
6bblbird replied to W-409's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Other than the body (minus the hood) and possibly the chassis pan, there is not much in the Johan kit that lends itself to a Super Stock build. You would be better off using just about any other 'cuda or Challenger kit for a more correct build. Here is a '70s era Super Stocker that I built using a Revell die cast as a base: WF -
Nostalgic Super Stock/Pro Stock Hemi questions.
6bblbird replied to W-409's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Hi Niko! It's your friendly, Stock/Super Stock guru! You can paint that engine any color that you like. That is what engine builders do. There are no rules on drive line paint colors. As far as building the Johan, Sox & Martin '71 'cuda as a Super Stocker ( vintage or otherwise) you will have to find a stock hood as fiberglass hoods with scoops are not legal in traditional NHRA classes and are not accepted in most current Nostalgia S/S groups. Depending on the engine that you decide to use you will also have to source a stock style carburetor or carburetors and an intake manifold. The individual runner manifold used in the Pro Stock kit would also not be legal. You could, however, build it as a Nostalgia Pro Stocker avoid the hassles of digging up all of the parts to make it "correct". WF -
The chassis in the AMT Drag Strip Accessories kit that I have is definitely chrome. The chassis in the Double Dragster kit is white styrene. WF

Ummmm, that looks like a Charger to me. ??

If that car was raced with that non stock hood scoop, it could be classified a Gasser or Modified Production car. There were times when a racer would change parts on a Stock class car to run in Gas or M/P. The reason? It might be more competitive in a lesser populated class or the car may have been able to set a record in one of those other categories with a few parts changes, like a non legal intake and carbs. By simply removing the front bumper on a legal Stocker you would turn your car into a Gasser! It was quite common in the seventies for Pro Stock cars to compete in the Gas classes when they would not be able to qualify in a tight Pro Stock field. WF P.S. Depending on on certain equipment and the year it was raced, that car could have run in Stock, Super Stock, Factory Experimental, Gas, or Modified Production.

Oh man! This one has it all! Uniqueness, great imagination, detail, presentation, paint,........... you nailed it on every point! WF

Terrific! Bob, you have taken what I consider a piece of $%#@ kit and turned it into a piece of jewelery! Great detail work throughout and a perfectly executed paint job! WF

question about late Gassers and 70's tire size
6bblbird replied to noname's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I'm sure that someone may have used a hydro stick in to the early '70s but you would find far more racers using 4 speeds with clutches, especially Chrysler "Hemi Boxes". A lot of non-competitive Pro Stock cars found their way into the A and B Gas classes using tires no wider than 12 inches. Sixteen inch wide tires would be way too large for any gasoline fueled car in the '70s. WF -
question about late Gassers and 70's tire size
6bblbird replied to noname's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Hey noname! I think that I can help you with your first question, not so much with the second one. The Gas classes existed well past 1972. You could say that the actual Gasser classes were absorbed into the Altered classes and ran in Competition Eliminator after Modified Eliminator was axed in 1982. Modified was replaced by Super Gas. I believe that the IHRA kept many Gas classes intact through the '90s. WF -
Great concept and execution! I also like the second paint scheme. The first was way too busy. WF

Ken, you build some really nice stuff! The photography ain't to shabby either! WF

Jungle in a Mopar!!!!! PURE BLASPHEMY!!! That is sooo wrong Great build though! Nice detail work. I especially like the black trim around the windows. And you....... should probably ask some questions or do some research before you stick your foot in your mouth! -
I almost forgot how much trouble this kit was to build! Seeing your photos just reminded me! The chassis was just horrible and took a lot of work and fudging to get it straight. Here is mine. Check out the name on the cowl! WF

need help with old fuel injection plumbing

If you go to the Kinsler website ( http://www.kinsler.com/hand31.html ) you can look up the schematics for mechanical injection. There is some good stuff there worth copying for future reference. WF
