Fred Cady Decals
Modelmartin replied to Pete L.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sorry to disappoint those who know the story because here is the actual story! Fred "officially" retired but he still has a vast inventory and occasionally reprints sold out runs. He mostly sells to several dealers and retailers now but will still fill orders that find their way to his P.O. box. As far as I know he plans to operate this way indefinitely. He did NOT sell off his inventory. He IS still selling decals. He won't be doing new sheets but will reprint old ones. This is all from the horse's mouth as of a few weeks ago. -
Government Motors is born!
Modelmartin replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There goes the civility! So you are calling me a Hypocrite and a Dork. That's just wonderful now, isn't it. Where are your manners? We need to put the politeness back into politics. Screw the issues! Nothing will ever get done if we don't respect each other. We don't have to agree, we just have to be civil to each other. -

Wow ! This thread has been really civil and well-mannered. Is Jairus on Vacation? I ask you all this...... could the Government do worse than the Pontiac Aztek??? I rest my case. -
......LOST.....FOREVER???
Modelmartin replied to ZIL 111V's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Those are real old Lindberg tools. They are very crude and unrealistic. The Aurora Old Timers were much nicer. -
......LOST.....FOREVER???
Modelmartin replied to ZIL 111V's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Lindberg just re-released the Model T Coupelet from the Brass series last year. I would think some of the other Brass series survived if that one did. There are enough of them floating around on Ebay for reasonable prices that it would be easy to collect them all at reasonable prices. I did. I didn't pay more than 10 - 15 dollars for any of them - often less. There were twelve of them and most were pretty nice. The Stevens-Duryea roadster is bogus but all of the others are quite good. The Mercers and the Lozier are the hardest to find but you can get the Renault Limousine for $5.00 all the time! They must have made lots of them and no one built them! -
I agree with the Treehugger. Try a bunch of them and use what works for your building style. I use liquid for styrene. I get pint cans from plastics supply places. The stuff is meant for use on acrylic plastics(plexi). I order 2 pints and it usually lasts me 2 or 3 years. It is thin and is pretty powerful. Obviously it is a strong solvent so care must be taken using it. I haven't used tube glue since 1980!! I use gap-filling CA glue and some accelerater. My brand is Satellite City Hot Stuff. I use white glue increasingly, usually Microscale Micro Crystal Clear. I used to use Five-Minute Epoxy all the time but now I won't touch the stuff. It turns amber after a few years and drys out and loses strength. If I need some real strength I will use JB WELD which is a filled epoxy. It is excellent stuff. For gluing P/E to painted surfaces I use Tamiya acrylic clear paint. That's it for me. Four different glues and the Tamiya clear. I haven't used anything else in at least 15 years. I have been building since I was seven years old and all that experience has come down to those choices.

Very nice! For as many of those there are floating around, I think this is the first one I have seen built!!

The Fujimis are curbside kits. The wheels on the New Mini are Aoshimas or somesuch. I liked how they looked like big Minilites! I am working on another Fujimi rally car and a Tamiya Cooper racer. Can you tell I dig minis?
-
Keychain??!! Your 1/8 scale cars would make great lawn ornaments!!!!
-
These two Fujimi kits were finished recently. They are both 1/24th scale. The red one was driven in the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally and is a Fujimi release built out of the box mostly. The blue car wears Studio 27 decals (Who else, Sherlock?) and was sponsored by them and run in the 2001 International rally in Hokkaido, which is the northernmost island of Japan. These were both easy builds. The Fujimi kit pretty much falls together. The only issue is filling in the ghosted lines from the sunroof cutout/ The paint lifts the lines from the underside so I had to backfill it underneath and then do a couple of prime-sand cycles to get it to go away. The third car is something I did a few years ago and is a "what-if?" for the Revell New Mini.

I found this HUGE quarter to show off next to my Mini rally car. Ain't it special? In all seriousness this is a GT Mini Petite 1/76th scale resin kit from about 15 years ago. I built it and I don't want to hear any whining about how hard it is to foil trim!!
-
What's your scale preference?
Modelmartin replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to build a lot of 1/43rd but gave it up many moons ago because of the cost. I build 95% in 1/24-5 but do build an occasional 1/32 nd car because there are so many cool Brass era cars in that scale from Pyro and Airfix. -
They're still dropping like flies...
Modelmartin replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No one gets out alive! -
That is very cool and looks great. You should sell a ton!

Anyone out there???
Modelmartin replied to cruz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is a Fred Cady decal by the look of it. Why don't you just write to him at his P.O. box (get that from his old ads in SAE or Model Cars)and see if he still has them in stock. He has a lot of inventory and is happy to fill orders. It would be a lot easier than reprinting. -
I can scan articles on the original car if anyone needs it from my wall of magazines. It looked somewhat different than the one pictured here.

Revell '32 Ford Five Window
Modelmartin replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
BUT....does he finish? -
There are several kits you could use. The garlits Swamp Rat from AMT which is also available as The Hemi-sphere and Hippie Hemi kits has the wheelbase you want and is a pretty nice kit. The Ramchargers dragster is fair - it has a crappy engine. The Revell Tony Nancy double kit has a pair of really well detailed early 60s dragsters in it. Most kits with one piece frames have the d-shaped rails. They need to do that for mold draft so they can get the parts out of the molds. I recommend just going in with an X-acto knife and scraping them until they are round. I have done it and it isn't hard and doesn't take long. There really isn't that much material to take off. The only hitch with George's method is that it makes the frame rail a bit wide. Good luck with your project. Dragsters are fun to build.

Koenigsegg to buy SAAB
Modelmartin replied to CAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had a few Saabs a number of years ago and really liked them. One was a 95 with the Ford V4 in it. It is one of the few cars I have owned(50+) in my life that I would want another one. It was reliable and fun. I had 2 different 99s and they were great but I burned valves in one and the other had FI problems from the Bosch Mechanical system. I like the cars though. They were comfy, handled well and they could go anywhere in the snow ! It will be fascinating to see what Koenigsegg will do with them seeing as how their specialty is over the top performance. -

I thought you were talking about a fat guy who worked at Revell. Never mind. -
Modeller evicted
Modelmartin replied to lordairgtar's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ted's physical disabilities are very real. Do not doubt that. He has a hard time getting around. We have known Ted for a number of years. He has known that the house was going away for some time. I will not say more about Ted than that his ducks are not neatly lined up in a row. He is a pleasant and friendly guy and he will do better in an apartment where he won't have to do maintenance, etc. This is not the great tragedy or the big con or anything but what it is. A guy lost a crappy old house in a bad part of town. To those of you who have showed concern, I will pass it on to Ted and I am sure he will be grateful. -

The best BBQ in town is Ted Cook's 19th hole on East 38th St. near Hiawatha in South Mpls. Famous' is OK but that is a big chain now too. -
