Oh, noooooo... They're multiplying! '90 MUSTANG LX 5.0 - The SILVER FOX
mrm replied to mrm's topic in WIP: Model Cars
After quite some back and fort on color, I decided to stick to my trend of painting American hot rods in Italian exotic colors. So I am going with Ferrari Grigio Nurburgring, which is about the brightest silver in Ferrari's (or anybody else's) factory option list. I am after a particular look for this car and I need it to "glow" silver. Tamiya's Silver Leaf is just as bright. if not brighter, but it has a different finish to it. Almost like a polished bare metal. Like aluminum that has been polished out, but just not quite to mirror finish yet. And I want a car that is obviously painted in the loudest silver there is. I sanded the primer perfectly smooth and then sprayed the body, hood and chassis. This is exactly the color I wanted, but it brought out a LOT of issues on the body, which were not visible before and some design elements, which I am not quite happy with once I saw it in color. So I am going to have to fill some spots with putty, sand the whole thing perfectly smooth, reprime it and shoot it with silver again. Oh well, plenty of other things to do all the models I am trying to finish simultaneously. -
One of the few Fuji Ferraris I don't have. I love your color choice. Reminds me of Michael Mann's 599 GTO.

Thank you, Joe. I'm trying to have some fun too, but my sense of humor has gotten me in trouble on here before. -
It's all good, man. No need to apologize. I appreciate your comments. And reading the forum with a cold brew in hand (often times something much stronger) is one of the simple pleasures in life I am not giving up. Thank you Dennis. The colors were pure dumb luck while buying stuff for the house at Walmart. Sometimes the stars align like that. Thank you for the kind words.

Thanks for all that. I’m familiar with it. But for the look I’m after it may not be silver enough. Lol. -
This model, unlike most of my creations will actually have the stock kit's engine and the interior will also stay pretty much bone stock, in line with the look of many modern restomods. After all, in real life just because something looks factory stock, does not mean it is. As you can see, both the interior and the engine are very, very orange. This is also the color of the center stripe I'm painting on the body. It will all get somewhat toned down oce all the details are added, but it will still be a stark contrast to the outside of the car. Although the frame of the car and most of the underbody is going to remain stock, I am not using the stock rear suspension from the kit. So all the mounting points for the original rear end were covered up by styrene stock. Then the chassis was also painted in Hot rod black primer and most of it will remain that way on the finished model. Now I got to get on that engine... Stay tuned...

After some sanding, a second round of putty and some more sanding, the foxy body is ready for final primer and hopefully paint right after that. -
Looks fantastic. If you don't mind me asking, what seatbelts did you use for this build?
-
Thank you Steve. Flat or satin colors tend to cover better and dry smoother. Which is not the reason I chose this color, but it's still a nice bonus. The clear coat is going to be a necessity on this model, as it's needed to even the edges between the three colors on the body. Which also means 2K clear. I am about to spray the orange today, which will need white underneath. Then the clear will have to go on somewhat heavy and then sand everything down to a uniform smooth finish. At least that's the plan. LOL.
-
You should try different clear coat perhaps.

Tamiya Aston Martin DBS... One from the Top Shelf!
mrm replied to jaymcminn's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Paint looks fantastic and I am a big fan of the real car. Your choice of interior color is actually not that unusual at all. Especially on British cars with pedigree. And most of the time it is in black cars too. Prince Bernhard of Belgium was famous for ordering his Ferraris in that color combination, which became a signature spec, so to speak, for him. Jay Kay's Ferrari Enzo is in this spec also and a friend of mine had a Ferrari 456M which was British racing green on the outside, with this green for most of the interior with the dash and doors even darker, almost black, green. Aston Martin's color is green, so your choice for the interior will fit the model not only aesthetically, but in spirit too. -

To be honest, I am yet to see a Tmiya kit that doesn't fit nicely and look great as finished piece. -
I would love to see them redo the 930 Gemballa. It is a lot beter known in their coupe/convertible 1/24 Diecast versions, but there was a plastic model kit of it way back when. I sure hope the reissue that.

Tamiya Matt Black on the fenders and spoiler and Tamiya Gloss Black on the central stripe. Now it needs to dry well enough to be masked again for some orange.
-
Ready for some black!
-
First coat of paint is already on. Originally I wanted to make it black, but decided to go with a grey. These pastel grays seem to be very popular our days on anything from Hyundais to Bugattis. The color I used is from Tamiya's Color for Aircraft series. What seems odd to me is that these colors are available in US and any hobby shop that carries Tamiya products can order them for you. Yet I have never seen a shop carry them on the shelf, like the other Tamiya paint. This particular one is AS-31 Ocean Gray 2 RAF (aka the Brits ?), which is exactly what I had in mind. I sprayed the body straight from the can. These spray paints are easy to use and very forgiving. The only thing is that they are never glossy and definitely need a good clear coat.
-
That's a bummer What paints did you use this time?
-
Thank you Jeremy. Yes, I printed the flares and the rear wing. I printed the ones on my other Mustangs too, but these here needed quite a bit more body work to fit like I wanted them, compared to the other ones.

The original plan for this was to make a black car with an accent color. So trying a black primer was only natural. Very little touch up will be needed, mainly some sanding where the ca glue has shown up around the front fenders and wasn't completely sanded down. That's one of the reasons for a primer coat in the first place, to see things like that, right? This is the Very first time ever I am using this particular kind of primer. It is Dupli-Color DAP 1698 Black Hot Rod. $10 at my O'Rileys. Went on perfect, altho it looks really weird at first before it dries. I'm still leaning towards black on the body, altho thoughts of Nardo Grey are starting to creep in. Another important thing of this build is to chill and sip on a fine beverage. No stress or rush. Just enjoy it. A Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Rye Whisky does the job just fine. ?

I decided to try something new with this one and use Duplicolor Hot Rod Black primer. This was sprayed straight from the can. It is weird how it works and how it changes during the curing process. First it would look very grey and like it's almost transparent and very wet and shiny. My first reaction was that I didn't shake the can enough. But you let it dry and it becomes very black and very smooth with this silky satin finish to it. Wait a day and it is definitely flat black. Like almost powdery chalk-like surface. I decided to shave the door handles and there were some minor imperfections, which were addressed with Tamiya putty What I liked to see was that the Tamiya putty did not eat up into the black right away. I mean it will eventually, but it shows very good solvent resistance from the primer. And it was still very fresh. That makes me confident that it will take pretty much any paint without issue. Some sanding, another coat of primer and we'll be ready for paint. I know it will be silver, but still have not decided on a particular kind of silver. So far it's a toss between Tamiya Silver Leaf and Argento Nurburgring straight from the Ferrari catalog. I really want a SILVER silver. -

After quite a bit of sanding, the Silver Fox is ready for first coat of primer. -
Thank you. I need to get me few of these.
-
This took more body work than I anticipated, but I feel like it was worth it.

Working on the interior. he center console was modified in couple of ways, eliminating the armrest and filling in the slot for the handbrake. Interior tub received some flocking, roll cage was installed. Seat cushions were painted. They still need some touching up. Interior mocked up. It still needs some touch ups and all the small details, like pedals, shifter, handbrake and I am trying to figure out what do I want to do with the seatbelts. I also started on the engine. It is the supercharged one from Revell's Super Stallion Mustang. It will fit in there, but the air intake tubes would have to be completely redone.

I don't know, but I can tell who would NOT be building it, not matter who makes it.
