Ha! Back in 2007 I wanted one of these neat diecast 1950 Ford trucks. They were going for $50-65 at shows and on eBay at the time. There were three of them offered on eBay one week, so I figured I was fishing with little hope, and put a $25 bid in on each one. I was very surprised when I won them all at $22-25 each! I happily paid.

Originality Counts?
Tom Geiger replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Believe me I'm not building for anyone else! Maybe my show example doesn't illustrate it right, but for instance I had a Ron Cash resin copy of the Divco milk truck. Once I saw the Danbury Mint version, I bought it and lost interest in building the resin one. It had already been done. I gave up competing at shows many years ago, I'd much rather display at an NNL, in forums and at club meetings. I try to make my models different, maybe a subject nobody has done like my messenger car, sometimes an old family or friends car, but I strive to build so that when someone sees one of my models they know it's mine, by style alone. -
some folks have ideas for several builds off the same kit, sometimes for using resin bodies. I know someone who has built over 20 of the '53 Ford pickup kit. Others know that specific kits have parts they would like to use in the future on other builds. For instance, I have a dozen of the 1970 Chevy Impala kit bought cheap at shows over the years. They will be used for parts to restore my old original run of 1968-72 Chevys. I have a bunch of the AMT '41 Plymouth kit, bought for the flathead six engine to use in other projects.

I think I'm about to break photobucket...
Tom Geiger replied to JTalmage's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I have a Fotki account that I've had for more than ten years. Once I started posting on this board and realized the threads lived forever I stopped moving photos. When I want things in a new album I copy photos into them and leave the originals where they were. I have build albums, then finished model albums. I would typically move that build album to my finished folder when done, and lately I have gone back to my threads and relinked the photos to the new album. The one shortcoming of this board is that a lot of the historic threads have a lot of broken images where people have deleted the photos from their accounts. I hate that so I do what I can to keep mine in order. -
Originality Counts?

I'm the other guy who voted, " If it's been done, I'm not interested in doing it." (2 votes when I typed this). It just doesn't interest me to build something out of the box, or a replica that I'll get to a show and there may be several of the same vehicle. I like to build interesting things (at least to me) and to make it different. I also love to see when someone else hits it out of the park, finding a way to make a '57 Chevy (or other belly button) different and interesting. -
Cool. I have a turquoise one still in the box. Bought it new at Hobby Masters in Red Bank NJ back when I first got back to the hobby in the late 1980s. I had been there admiring all the Johan oldies kits they had on the shelves, then they put a 25% off coupon in the local paper... went there and emptied that shelf! I also have a convertible that I bought on eBay as a built up. It's painted purple. The idiot I bought it from shipped it in a bubble mailer. The windshield frame was shattered in the mail. I wrote him and his reply was, "You're a modeler, fix it!". This was before Paypal and guarantees so I left him neutral feedback for crummy packing and attitude.

Box Art for Bob Paeth
Tom Geiger replied to cruzn's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow! Thanks for dredging up that ancient post. Bob Paeth was a great guy and a good story teller. I'm glad that story is archived here on the board. I think we've lost too much history! -
If a box is older and in good condition, I will fold it up to save space. I have a whole mess of boxes stored this way in a couple of moving boxes. Newer kit boxes, especially stuff I have multiples of and damaged boxes go into recycling. I do have some of my favorite boxes on display, full or empty!

I've done this several times, my parents, my wife's parents, my grandparents and two aunts houses! What I can tell you is to be careful as you sort things. In my instances, I found valuables hidden in common things, and my father had documents and family pictures in the most unusual places. The most recent was my in-laws house in 2013, we were fortunate it was spring and we had a garage sale in the house. We brought the small stuff outside, but marked big furniture in it's place and let people walk through the house. It's tough to dismantle the home you grew up in. Every drawer is full of memories, things you remember using as a kid, and you're tempted to save everything. Good luck.

I love the Compact Class races, especially since the Valiants took the first seven places. The last one, driven by Richard Petty, wrecked out and didn't finish. The races were run in 1960-2. I am looking for any info anyone may have, especially video. I do have a lot of original articles and such, so I can help too!

This morning everything outside is solid ice and it's raining, which is freezing upon landing. I chipped the ice off both cars. The driveway and my development streets are icy. I slipped twice getting up to the corner of a main road. Right as I sat there thinking I really didn't want to drive to work in this mess, I get a ping from my boss. The ice was worse at his house, so he said to work from home. I was really happy to turn around and get back inside the warm house!

Rob, it sounds like my weekend! Friday evening I'm driving home from work and suddenly the brakes on my Breeze feel very hard and like the car will not stop. The pedal isn't on the floor, so I'm anticipating that the power brake unit has given up. Funny thing, I went to move the car this morning and it seemed back to normal. I'm not trusting that though, it needs an inspection so it's going to the garage anyway. My van has been at the garage to get it's annual inspection. It's been sitting there a week because their emissions machine is down. That wasn't an issue since the van is a spare car so I told them just to keep it. Of course I need it now with the Breeze down! Saturday AM I ran out to do my errands since I needed to leave for NJ for my model meeting. My wife wanted to work on a scrap book all day since I'm leaving her without a car. I expect to run through Walmart, grabbing her photo order and soda for the model meeting. Nope! I get to the photo counter and nobody is there. I rustle up a couple of employees who don't know how to help. Then I find out that their computers are down and there are no photos! I buy soda. I hit the post office to get the stamps for the NNL East postcard mailing. The post office has 200 postcard stamps! They were nice enough to call a neighboring post office who confirmed that they had the stamps and would hold them for me. Now I'm driving 20 minutes out of my way and am now late for my meeting. I get the stamps. Sunday my wife decides to have some ice cream and gets it from the freezer... it's mushy. So now there's something wrong with the freezer! We just paid a lot of money to replace the compressor, so I'm calling the repair company today. It's always something!

London Cab "Surf Fare" *PICS* *WIP* *Updated 1-16*
Tom Geiger replied to bondo bill's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I like it! I just love it when guys come up with something completely different. Joe, this is a pretty simple kit with poor detailing. Just look at the parts spread above with the one piece flat chassis and one piece engine bay. Reminds me of a diecast! That's why it's a great kit to use for a surf wagon! -

My daughter may have been five, and we were taking a walk in the neighborhood during the summer. She stopped in front of a house that still had decorations and lights up and asked me, "Daddy, why is it always Christmas at that house?" My invention idea? Rain gutters and leaders with built in Christmas lights! They'd hide behind dark panels unless lit. -
67 Camaro SS396 "day two" WIP. Mar 24 update
Tom Geiger replied to freakshow12's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I have a mess of parts that I think are cool and hope to use on a build someday. I keep them on an open shelf above my model bench so I don't forget about them and try to work them into builds someday. For instance, I painted these seats to go into my '34 Ford sedan... in the end I didn't use them so they sat on that shelf, but not for long... When they wound up in this 29 Ford! The wheel / tire combo on this one were also on the shelf, came off an old diecast and again I needed to use them on a build, so I did. A few more of those parts... tail lights on this one were old large truck overhead lights. Had to use them on something. And the rear tire / wheels are from the 28 Lincoln kit.... the other two are currently on that shelf waiting for a project! -

They made plenty of that kit. I remember seeing them on clearance tables... only once you need a kit, they go into hiding! -

Very cool use of old fish tanks. Interesting that you were able to get several of that interesting multi sided one! In the same spirit of "cheap to free" I have a couple of old china cabinets. The above one is huge and I paid $100 for it in a second hand furniture store. It wasn't sold because it is way too big for the average house. Fortunate that I have nine foot ceilings. I will be adding a shelf between each existing shelf soon. This one is in my home office downstairs. My original case, again a china cabinet, this one obtained for free over 25 years ago. Again, I will add some shelves. This one is upstairs in the model room. The small case on the right is a curio cabinet. I was driving home one afternoon and saw one of these out for trash at the curb. It was a dark wood one that was almost identical to this one. My wife grabbed it from me, trading me this one since the darker wood looked better in the foyer where she has it. This one is home to my Olde Kustom Kollection and is in the model room. There's lots of options in the cheap to free category. You just need to hit garage sales, let friends and relatives know you are looking for one, or hit Craigs List.
