and you come across a shipping container filled with a load of a single kit... what kit would you want that to be? Let's say you will have all the building supplies you need, but you need to build that same kit over and over..... What kit would this be?? I'd wish for AMT '53 Ford pickups! I love that kit and it comes with the 3 in 1 versions that you could build different trucks every time! And I could build light commercial varieties the rest of my life! And yours would be?

I had that same experience... I tried to glue a soap dish back in my tub tile wall. I had it taped in place.. came back to find the glue had expanded and now I had this soap dish sticking out and crooked.. and glued very well! What a pain in the tail chizzling that out! Wayne, I like a thicker CA that doesn't set up instantly. I get the hobby shop brand (Bob Smith Industries glue that they put your local hobby shop's name on). I get the thickest variety.

And that's no doubt why those of us who asked for it for Christmas only got the Visible V8 and not the chassis too! I know my father was a pretty frugal guy.

THE Color for Particular Cars?
Tom Geiger replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A story.. my uncle, who has always had pretty boring cars like Camrys, ordered a Tesla. I asked what color, and he said silver because it doesn't show dirt. I yelled at him, "You are buying a $90,000 car and you're not going to wash it?" He must've thought about that because the next time I saw him he told me he changed his order to RED! -
THE Color for Particular Cars?

Many years ago I was in the market for a late model used Dodge Caravan. My neighbor worked for Avis and said they had a low mile cream puff that had just come off lease and she could work out a give away price. I get there and the van is WHITE. It looked like an ambulance to me so there was no way I could buy it. Later on I had a similar experience with a black one. Not long before that I had attended a funeral and the funeral home used a black Dodge Caravan as the flower car. I eventually bought a gold one! -
Hi Steve- Welcome to you and your son! When someone opens with the a statement like the above one, we don't expect to see much! But you must've been a good modeler in your day and haven't forgot anything!

Christmas 1969 or 1970, the Renwal V8 and chassis were in the Sears catalog. Being 12 years old, I thought the sales pitch "really runs" meant that if I had the engine and the chassis, I could drive it around. So I asked for both for Christmas. I got the V8, but not the chassis and was quickly disappointed.

And that's why we have opinions... I hate black or white on any car. -
THE Color for Particular Cars?

I think the colors we believe certain cars look good in, go back to the original ads for that car. For instance if I said, "Ford Granada", everyone would instantly think silver. And that's the color in most of the original ads. Same with a '68 Lemans / GTO Verdoro Green was in all the ads, so the public bought cars in that color. In fact back in 1978 when my buddy's '68 Lemans got smacked.. no problem at all finding the fender and door in that color. Mopar also had a similar green that it seemed every second 1970 or so Dart was painted. -
Cool Rich! I'll pull up a chair and watch your latest 1950s creation take shape!

What kind of music.....
Tom Geiger replied to Hot_Rod_Bob's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm more the strong silent type Once I get building, if I had music on in the background I wouldn't even hear it. I zone out completely into concentration on my task! Occasionally I'll put TV on in the background, only to look up and find that the show I had tuned in was long over. -
I love that movie! I can almost recite along with most of it. A few years ago The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, PA showed it on the big screen right before Christmas. I got tickets for the family thinking it would be a treat! The Colonial is an old time theater, all restored for such events. I thought it would be really cool to see the movie like people did back in 1945. My younger daughter and I thought it was just grand and enjoyed ourselves. My wife and older daughter didn't get why we wanted to see this old black and white movie! And it's fun to watch the things that were common talk back in the day that would be totally off bounds today. There is a 1932 era movie that I believe was called "Employee Entrance" about the employees in a department store. The store scenes with old top compressor refrigerators etc were priceless. The banter was also funny... head of personnel interviewing a woman, "You're a good lookin' dame... of course we'll hire you! You can work here until you find a husband to support you!"

WOW,,,,,,,,,,Is all I can say .

I've looked at bidding results where some guy bid over and over at $5 increments to find the high bidders maximum. (I've also seen them do this to find the reserve). My premise is that my bid isn't siting there for them to work against. For instance, a guy who would have decided is top bid was $100, and then did the incremental bid thing, discovered my top bid was $115, would suddenly change is mind and go to $120. If I hadn't bid, he would've put in his $100 and walked away. With my bid of $120 swooping in with 6 seconds left, he'd never have a chance to react. And I would win the auction for $105, the next increment over $100. So I save money by sniping. And even with sniping, I only win a fraction of the time. There is often someone crazier than me bidding on the same items! -
Anyone ever heard of ESCI models?
Tom Geiger replied to buxxx69's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have the same, I got mine from Model King back then. It was something about either a cancelled order or over production. AMT (or who ever owned them then!) dumped a load of these onto model car dealers. Model King would also buy their remaining stock after the Blue Printer promotions. That's where I got all my Blue Printer specials! -

Same here but I do it at that very last few seconds. I have a snipe service that I've used for years. No reason to have my bid on display for others to bid against. -
How much did you stretch it?

What Did You Get Today? (Not Model Related)

Was there a sale someplace on scary hobo pictures? -
Since you inquired... we decided at today's Holiday Open House..... An old favorite that just was reissued in the original kit box! We know everyone loves this kit and will surely build one for the web theme!

Think copyright and trademark engravings are a pain?
Tom Geiger replied to Jantrix's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
My favorite was an old built up that I bought that had one of those stiffeners between the fenders that you are supposed to remove. And the kid who built the kit not only painted it and neglected to remove it, he even highlighted the letters REMOVE in silver paint. And he probably couldn't figure out why the hood didn't fit. -
and beer, where is the beer?

You managed to sit that out? Some of us have emotional issues because of it!

That's the ticket! Thanks! Now to find one. And I won't be needing the big gun. -
Wow! I'd have to order a few cases of those just for the guys in my club! That could be our same kit build this year!

Tom Geiger replied to gtx6970's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yes, but that doesn't account for materials. An R&R kit goes for $40-60 as starters. There is that custom wood work and other materials. Figure maybe $100-200 in costs Everyone gripes about the cost of buying professional work. But same folks will defend their own incomes! Imagine what a model car build would cost at Paul's shop rate!
