  1. I know how I'm going to do it. The bigger cabinet has glass shelves with no front edge, just clips on the side. I believe I can duplicate this so it looks like it came that way. The older cabinet actually has wood shelves with glass centers. I can't duplicate that but I'll put a 3 piece glass shelf between each existing shelf. I'll hide the mounts behind the vertical wood of the cabinet. It shouldn't look all that bad.
  2. There is a robust group of modelers in South Africa. The Kimbereley Modelers Society in Kimberley, South Africa hosts the South Africa NNL every year. I have some friends in that group, Peter Thomas, who visited me here in the US, Gerhard VanVuuren and I know Chris Roos posts on the boards here occasionally.
  3. I'll give 'er the thumbs up! I especially like your seat cover. How did you make that? Where did you find the fabric with the stripes in the right scale? Very cool. I also like your black pickup bed floor. Note that Chevrolet painted those boards black at the factory. Everyone who has done them in shiny wood has over restored / customized their truck. One suggestion I could make would be to include the heater hoses. See them on the left side of the below photo: Mine stand a little too tall though! There is also a hose from the power brake booster from the intake manifold.
  4. Looks good Rich! Take your time and do it justice! Here's a reference picture for ya! And here's the work I started..
  5. I like to display my models in old china cabinets. They are available for free to cheap. This is my main display case, downstairs in my office. I have my best stuff on display here. Due to the height needed for displaying glasses and platters, the 3 shelves are far enough apart to add a shelf between each, doubling the capacity to 6 shelves. China cabinets usually have lights and glass shelves so they're pretty much made to order display cases. I paid $100 for this one at a consignment furniture store. Here's my original display case / china cabinet that I've had in my model room for 24 years. I got this one free when a relative was moving. This is upstairs in my model room. Like the other cabinet, I intend to add an extra shelf between each existing one for a six shelf capacity. Not much in there right now. Here's a display case that holds some of my old custom collection, also up in the model room. My wife had this one for years, when one day on my way home from work, I saw a dark wood one just sitting at the curb. I had the Caravan so I stopped and grabbed it up. My wife liked that one better, so she traded me! In this photo you can also see three wall mount cases that I have yet to use. I also have a small store display counter out in my garage. I got it for free, another curb find, but it doesn't have any shelves. Eventually it will go in the same general area as the last two in the model room. We are in the process of selling my in-laws house so I may come into a third china cabinet.
  6. I love the Airfix 1/32 scale kits! When I was a kid living in Germany we couldn't get US kits locally, but those little Airfix cars were always available. I have about 10 different ones, mostly bought as an adult in the US. It used to be that you could pick them up at shows for $5, but that was before eBay. Now people post them for sale and the Europeans bid them up to big Euros!
  7. Rich, why all the passion on '58s? I'm a '58 myself, coming into this world in September 1958. In my case, I the '59s were coming down the line on the day I was born, so I collect '59s.
  8. I liked the '55 truck grill, but turning it upside down would be interesting...
  9. I just stand here and count the Geigers as they come and go.
  10. Get on their e mailing list. Go into the store and they'll sign you up. They email me coupons like every other day. There's always a 50% off a single item, or a 20% off your whole order.
  11. The day you realize that the waitresses, hair cutters and secretaries you flirt with are younger than your daughters!
  12. Responding to Rich's post about working in the dining room... this is a photo of my old model room in NJ, but focus on the yellow and pink board in the center of the bench. This is my lucky modeling board. Back when I didn't have a space I actually built the Pyrite's Paddler '53 Ford on my avatar on this board on my kitchen table. This was back when my kids were small so I had to be careful and keep everything out of their reach. Each evening after dinner, I would clamp my light to the edge of the kitchen table, set my board in place and start working. At the end of each session, I'd tidy up and put the board, with the project still on it, on top of the refrigerator. I learned to work it out. As a positive, it taught me to work a bit more tidy and plan out my work better. So those of you who don't have a dedicated space, it's no excuse not to build. I built my favorite model on the kitchen table!
  13. Jerry also posted on the Spotlight board as Luke'57. We would email on occasion. He was a nice guy and taken way too soon.
  14. I got some Testors Dullcote at Michaels using my 50% off coupon. Less than $3.00 I didn't need any of the kits they had in stock to make better use of the coupon. And everything they had marked as "Clearance" on the shelf edge, was gone! So somebody is building models around here in PA!
  15. Wow! I think it was Friday evening that I was responding to a post, hit POST and nothing happened. So I went my merry way. I didn't even check in yesterday because I was busy with real life and got the NNL East vendor mailing together and out. Today we did a big clean up of the house and junk purge, so I'm just back now.
  16. I've got this pair that look nice from the curb but the original builder had a glue fetish. They came from the same collection, so I'm assuming the same builder. They have a few of those glue sink marks in awful positions. So I don't dare try to take them apart for resto.
  17. Wow! I'll never look at my Jaguar S Type the same again! Actually I want to help the guy. I could use that left front fender!
  18. Here's another option. The bed in the AMT '53 Ford was still current in this era. I'm planning on doing one!
  19. I seldom search eBay for what I'm looking for. I set up a search agent that emails me every time something I want comes up for sale. Just go to eBay in the model car category and type in the search line: 1955 (chevy, chevrolet) monogram -badman -(conv,convertible) -pace -street The search is set up to find either Chevy or Chevrolet, and the minus terms eliminate a bunch of different issues that you're not interested in. The list still brings up a bunch of models that aren't the one you're looking for, but I can't see how to narrow the search down any further. Once you're happy with the results of your search, click the button marked "SAVE" at the end of this line. That will set you up with the search agent that will email you daily.
  20. Jeff, I have always built in an upstairs spare bedroom that becomes 'the model room'. Back when I was in NJ, I didn't have a basement so it basically was the only space available. Here in PA, my house has a full finished basement but I still took over a bedroom upstairs. My wife figured she could too, so she has the room next to me as her photo and craft room. My daughters are grown and live back in NJ so we have the space here. Even though the basement is finished, I feel disconnected when I'm down there by myself.
  21. sometimes I don't finish them because I'm into the build and once it's finished it's over. I find myself detouring off to create little details and keeping the build alive. I do the same with a good book. When I start it, I'll read chapters until I'm blurry eyed. Once I get near the end, I'll read a chapter per sitting, then a few pages at a time when I'm really close to the end! I have three models on my bench right now that are 95% done and what do I do? Start another one!
  22. Gluhead, allowing selling on this forum isn't in their mission. The main mission of this site is to attract people to Model Cars Magazine. This site generates no income, but only costs Greg and MCM money to maintain. Set up a selling forum and then the advertisers from the magazine could sell stuff here, and not advertise in the magazine, costing them income. Not good business sense. Plus Harry is right. It would double the moderators duties. Every time someone got the short end of the deal, they'd scream bloody murder on the board, causing the owners grief. Simply put, there's nothing go gain by doing so.
