Ala Kart a la carte: Part ONE, Compare and Contrast
Psychographic replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I don't know enough about Hemi's, but read the one in the original Ala Kart kit was seriously undersized. Was this resolved on the new kit? -
Chopped Top On 51 Chevy Fleetline
Psychographic replied to mredjr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here's how I did mine. First cut out around the back window, which is shown as the yellow line. You only cut the top and sides. The second cut is the red lines. The space between the horizontal lines are how much you will take out. The third and fourth cuts are the green lines. These are wedge cuts, they don't go all the way through the posts, but are deep enough to bend the top part forward and and outward. The bottom goes backward and inward. You have to eyeball these to realign the posts. I drew these backwards! If you cut them as shown, you will have to fill in the gaps. Cut them in the same locations, just swap the shape of the top and bottom cuts. The last cut is the blue line, which will realign the back window. You should have something that looks like this. As you can see you need to bend the top of the B pillar out, and the bottom in to realign it. Here's how it came out after a little bodywork. -

The shocks and panhard bar drove me crazy trying to get the lengths right so that the ride height was where it needed to be, and to get the rear centered. I'll add the springs to the shocks after I paint them. I had to put a small notch in the frame to clear the transmission, then I added the braces to where the shocks mount. I also added motor mounts and a crossmember under the engine. The frame and suspension parts are ready for primer. -

After a frustrating night of trying to button up the rear suspension, I decided to work on the engine. As I don't know anything about hemi's, I did a search and found a pic that helped me out a bit. I took what I could from the research and added my own twist to things. I made a harmonic balancer, a modular water pump, that the fuel pump mounts to and extended the shafts for the pulleys. -
I've been known to turn things like this, Into something like this. But I like it much better when I'm doing stuff like this,

I cut out the area for the gauge cluster and mounted a column drop to the sheet stock that will be instrument panel. The front suspension is mocked up except for the end of the link that hooks to the steering box. On the side of the frame is the panhard bar and the start of the coilovers for the rear suspension. -

I started to make a dashboard. With the hinges allowing the doors to open inside the body, there is going to be a big gap on each side to leave room for the doors to swing in. I'm not sure I like it, but will have to live with it. -

I reworked the front axle so it steers. -

I've got the front radius rods figured out, they will just clear the zoomies. I just need to shorten them a bit, and make the frame mounts for them. -

I've got the rear suspension almost done. I just need to make the coilovers, then I can finish the panhard bar once the ride height is determined. -

Didn't I say I wanted to keep this build simple? Oh well, I guess I lied. I've got the doors cutout, and the hinges made. -

I finished the sheet metal work for the trunk. A riser for the seats and a shifter. -

After looking at it for a while I decided the track on the rear was too wide for my liking, so out came the scribing tool and I tucked the back tires in quite a bit. I made the tubs from .020 sheet. Also for anyone who knows my style, it's on the ground. After a little more trimming I've got the body right where it needs to be. -

A quick mockup of where I hope to be with this. The zoomies are from a T'rantula and will be cut down later. -

A floor pan was made from .030 sheet, and the trans tunnel was stolen from a Stingaree. I decided to use the frame from the Stingaree. I cut the back off of it, bent it out behind the front torsion bars to make room for the engine. I also took a section from a second frame to raise the C-notch for the rear, and added 1/8" rod crossmembers, and some extensions for the body mounts were made from square stock. I made an injector hat from 3/16" tubing. -

I made a rollpan by cutting a section of 1/4" tubing for the center section and will fill the ends with scrap styrene. Here's the first mockup of it with an engine and wheels. I want to keep this build cheap and simple. Although I would like to use a T-bucket frame, I don't have one, so it's off to the pile of kits to see what I can find. -
Now what do I do with it ?

Love your version of DBB! Now ask your buddy in the club, if he wants to race. I think I got some competition for him.

'53 Chevy track racer - minor update 9/21
Psychographic replied to Jantrix's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I use this method all of the time. I mix it thin enough that when I stick a toothpic in the mix and pull it out one drop will drip off fairly quickly. If you mix it too thick it takes to long to dry. The thinner you make your mix, the more it will shrink as the solvent evaporates. As you work with it the MEK will evaporate from the bottle in the mix. If I'm doing a lot of work with it, I have to add a little MEK to the bottle every few weeks to thin it back down. I keep it in an old Plastruct Bondene bottle and don't even smell it when working with it. I've used the Ca/Baking soda mix and find the MEK/Styrene mix to be much stronger, especially when sectioning, chopping and such. -
It is really not my style to spread stuff like this around, but for some reason this really hit me hard when I read it ( enough so, to bring me out of my self appointed exile from forums). All this little girl is asking for is some cards. A dollar store card and a stamp is less than a bottle of paint, or a tube of glue. I myself lost the holiday spirit years ago, but that doesn't mean I don't have a heart. I just can't stand to see a child go through what this poor girl has endured and will for the rest of her life. I do not know this girl, but I do remember reading about the tragedy of the fire which killed the rest of her family and how her dad covered her with his body to protect her. http://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/mind-and-soul/this-orphaned-burn-victim-lost-her-family-in-an-arson-attack—all-she-wants-for-christmas-is-your-cards/ar-AAgaMB9?ocid=ansmsnlife11 I sure hope this doesn't break any forum rules. If it does, I apologize. Thank you, Dave

What did you see on the road today?
Psychographic replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
While sitting at a red light I spotted the back of this in a restaurant parking lot and just had to find out what it was. I was very surprised to see it was a Subaru. I have no idea what model or year it is, but it sure is cool. Any one know anything about this little car? -
