Root Beer 55 Chevy [Updated 8-14-13]
Psychographic replied to Pat Minarick's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That body looks great Pat, I want to see more. Is the MM done? -
Hey Pat, dare I say this. I like your wood!

A little more progress. The headlights are in and the windsheild has been modified and checked for fit. The grille is just sitting in place, it's not mounted yet. The windshield is split with a gasket molded around it. This obviously wont work with a chopped top, plus I wanted a smooth molded in one piece look. I started by wet sanding the gasket and center piece flush with some 320, then 600 and up to 12000 followed by Novus 3, 2, and 1 I heard a slight crack when sanding with the 320, it split right in the center on the top, you won't see it once it's mounted. It sure made the rest of the sanding and polishing a bit nerve wracking. Here's what I wound up with. It sure has a much cleaner look to it.

49' Mercury Speedster.. It's Done 5/4/13
Psychographic replied to BKcustoms's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This is very cool! It reminds me of a Porsche 550. I'm working on a similar build and also ran into the proportion problem. Your sectioning solution worked out great, the car looks perfect. -
Pro Touring 70 1/2 Camaro *First post here*
Psychographic replied to ll Brandon ll's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I get blamed for everything! As for mounting the body, if you don't have the kit's floor/trunk or if it's part of the chassis, your going to have to make one, then you can mount your interior tub to the floor and your body to the interior. You could also make tabs on the inside of the body to mount to your floor/trunk. This is my favorite Camaro body style, your doing a great job and I can't wait to see it finished. -
Thanks again for the comments everyone. I've got a little bit of progress, taillights are in, speakers are in the front doors, I've repaired/added a bit of rivets and started the woodgrain on the interior parts. The taillights are rhinestones. The interior woodwork was done to imitate a burl wood finish. I used a flat brown enamel followed by a wash of dark brown mixed with black acrylic. When the wash was dry, I then went over it again in a random haphazard pattern about 3 times to get the burl finish. I still need to clear it. The rivet details. Door speakers. A couple of shots of the rear with the tailgate sort of in place. Still waiting on the Uschi decals for the woodgrain.

Tommy, got any other pics of Balough's batmobile? That's an incredible looking model.

I've got the base down for the framework. After a little touch up I'll start practicing a few ideas I have for them. The doors are getting tight.
-
Thank's, I'll look for it.

Still no decals. I think they shipped to the billing address, if so I should have them tomorrow night. Until then I looked at the progress pics from the Uschi site, combined that with some advice given by other members and got started with the background paint. This pics shows the two steps to the airbrush work for the base of the decals. The base is a wood brown, the first step is a light fade using a darker brown, followed by a tighter fade of the same color with some flat black and a lot more thinner to make it spray much more transparent. The doors on the body. I need to do some work on the inside of the doors before I can paint the frames, which will be done in a lighter wood. I've got the back side windows cut to fit and the base coat is on the headliner, although I'm not sure how to handle the interior wood.

I bet it's salvageable, got any pics?

Geno, your glass is on it's way.

Found the glass, PM sent.

She's cleared! The theme for the color choices on this was the ocean, aqua (body and interior) for the shallow reefs, deep blue ( chassis ) for the deep water and the tan/beige (body and interior) for the foam that builds up on the water (BTW, you don't want to know what that foam actually is). I had a major debate going on in my head to do a slight fade along the bottom of the body with the chassis color. I finally decided the body looked good as is, if I added the fade it might have been too much as the wood and roof would be bringing more colors in to clutter up the body. On another note, I think my woodgrain decals are heading to the wrong address.

I had a little mishap and a bit of learning with the acrylic base. I know some people don't like them but these craft store acrylics work pretty well, once you start to get the hang of them. After a little wet sanding and touching up a couple of spots, I redid the nail polish and although it won't be my best paintjob, it should look pretty good. The pearl really brings it to life. I'll probably clear it later tonight.
-
I almost forgot to make a hood hinge! Almost done, I drilled some holes in the hinge to dress it up a bit and added a stop to the radiator support. I've also started to remove the stock hinge locators from the underside of the hood. I haven't broken the body in four days!!!!!!
-
OK, so I only gave it an hour. The base is on and as expected, I did miss a spot. I'll fix it tomorrow. My camera sure doesn't like this color, it refuses to get it right.
-
I started painting tonight. I've got the base acrylic down on the inside of the wheelweels and under hood area, along with the underside of the hood. I use a hairdryer to set and dry the acrylic, once it sets a couple of hours, I'll paint the top. Tomorrow I'll throw the nail polish on it and probably clear it tomorrow night.
-
I put her in final prime tonight. I don't see any spots I missed (that means at least 2 small spots will show up once the color goes on ). I'll let it dry overnight, hit it with some 600 and put the acrylic base on. I ordered a set of the Uschi Woody Decals, they should be here soon. Along with the BMF, this will be my first attempt at anything woodgrain, lets hope I don't screw up either of them!
-
PM sent. Do you have the red glass?
-
Both, the the primer/thinner and the filler are pretty hot for the styrene, so both needed time to cure. Tonight was hopefully going to be the last coat of primer before the final paint, but of course I found a couple of small spots that need to be addressed. This build will be my first venture with BMF, I guess I should start practicing! Luckily it's only the four straight spears on the fenders. I dropped it and only broke one joint!
