Coming soon it says...

Don't remind me... -
Same old story, just drop in the name of the shop. Been happening for years now. In our area, the two largest and best hobby shops, the type of shops people would make a special trip to, have both closed. There's no going back... the old-fashioned hobby shop is on its last legs... it's just a matter of time before they're all gone. Sort of like the old "five and dime" stores or corner groceries that used to be everywhere... just a pleasant memory now. The way we do business in this country has changed forever. The internet is here and it's not going away anytime soon.

What did you see on the road today?
Harry P. replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Seeing that photo Tom posted... maybe that's how the new electric car infrastructure will shape up. Not stand-alone "electric stations" like we now have gas stations, or combination gas/electric stations... but maybe businesses will start installing charging spots (like they have handicapped spots now)... you deposit a buck or two or whatever, and you get a certain amount of charge time (like an electrical parking meter, sort of). If most businesses and restaurants had such charging stations (and assuming electric car owners also had their own charging port at home), there might not be a need for "electric stations" on every corner, like gas stations are now. Maybe that's the way things will develop in the near future? It would be easier and cheaper than retrofitting existing gas stations to include electric charging "pumps" or building new "electric stations." The parking lot is already there, bought and paid for. It's just a matter of running a circuit out to the lot, painting a couple stripes on the pavement, and installing a few meters. So not only would the store or restaurant or office complex be offering a service, they'd also be making a few bucks by doing so. Win-win! -

Beautiful car in every way. If they cost 1/3 of what they do, I'd buy one today. -

How many model A Ford kits are there ?
Harry P. replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Don't know what to tell you. I haven't seen any of those issues except a warped fender on one kit,. And once you glue everything together, basically it takes care of itself. -
That's all within one hour!

A little problem with the fit of the hood...

Hmmm... I've built several of these... coupe, pickup, etc. Don't remember having any problems. -
Basic black is always in style...

Ray, that's cool! I also like the reversed headlights... a nice touch. Those rivet decals will add a lot of realism.

Out on the road today, I found further proof that the world's supply of clueless wonder drivers is going strong... All in the course of one trip today... Clueless Wonder A. I'm driving behind an SUV on a street that has one lane northbound, one lane southbound, and one continuous center lane to use for turning whether you're north or southbound (instead of individual defined turn lanes every so often, because there are a lot of store parking lot entrances on this stretch of road). SUV slows down, puts on left turn signal... then comes to a stop right in front of me and waits for oncoming traffic to pass. Did they bother using that spiffy center turn lane that was put there so that people who are turning don't have to block traffic? Nooooooooo..... Clueless Wonder B... in a typical suburban supermarket lot... you know, where the rows of parking spots are at a 45 degree angle, and there's a two-way "aisle" between each row of parked cars. I'm cruising down the first aisle slowly... no open spots... I get to the end of the lot and make a left turn into the next lane to try my luck there... and suddenly I'm face to face with C.W. B in a black Camaro. Right, he's on my side of the aisle instead of his side. So I sit there and stare at him for a few seconds. I wasn't about to back up and get out of his way because he was the one where he shouldn't be. After a few seconds the light went on in what passes for his brain, and he spins the wheel to his right and squeezes past me slowly. As our open windows pass, I asked him if he had any idea how a parking lot works. He looked at me and said (and I think he was serious)... "oh, is this a one-way parking lot?" You would think it was his first ever experience driving in a parking lot! Even the huge, bright yellow arrows on the pavement meant to guide clueless wonders like him weren't enough to overcome his cluelessness. Clueless Wonder C... ok, I'm almost home, literally a half block from my driveway. I'm thinking I survived another drive amongst the morons, but NO! All of a sudden C.W. C backs his car out of his driveway right in front of me! Now this is my street, a quiet residential suburban sidestreet, so I wasn't going fast... maybe 20, tops. I was only in second gear, but I still had to make a sudden stop to avoid plowing into C.W. C. And so I'm sitting there as he continues to pull out, and then move out past me to my left. As he passes by, he gives me a look as if I'm the idiot! Sigh...

He says he wants to build it and then give it to the kid. I think a steel toy fire engine would be way more appropriate (and "playworthy") for a 5-year old than an assembled plastic model of any sort, snap or not. After 10 minutes in a 5-year old's hands, it'll be broken.

Maybe it would be better to get him a steel toy fire truck instead. At least he could play with it.

Hard to say. I like a lot of them. I'd like an early version (65-66-67), but then again I like the look of the late 60s fastbacks. I'd have to do my research and see what different ones are going for before I can narrow it down, but it might be nice for the vintage one to be a convertible, since the new one will be a coupe.

I don't mean literally sitting in the garage. I mean in the garage, as in I own them.

Panel seperation lines molding?
Harry P. replied to jjsipes's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Exactly. The only reason I can figure is the "good enough" mentality that so many times seems to be the guiding principle behind a kit. -
Cry me a river. I'm self-employed... have been since the late '80s. Yes, I know... it's my choice. But every time I hear someone crying about pensions and/or "early retirement," it's like nails on a chalkboard to me. Consider these facts: Since I'm self-employed, I have to pay into Social Security double what everyone else pays in. I have to pay my half (the half the employee pays) and the half the employer pays, since I am the employer of me! Will I get double the SS payments when (if?) I retire? Of course not. I have the "privilege" of paying double, but receiving just the "normal" SS payment–assuming SS is still in existence when (if) I retire! Unfair? You betcha! A few more "benefits" of being self employed... (keep in mind, I work as hard as anyone, the difference is that technically I'm my own employer)... no pension. Zero. No insurance coverage or any benefits of any kind. Zero. No paid holidays or vacation... if I take a day off, I lose any income I might have made that day. So excuse me if I'm not as sympathetic as others might be to stories of people who are forced into early retirement, yet still collect a pension for the rest of their lives.

Will GM's problems ever end?
Harry P. replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The endless parade of GM recalls is so ongoing and common by now, it doesn't even make the news anymore! The only reason I found out about today's Saab recall is that I hadn't heard anything on the news lately regarding GM... so I was curious and googled "GM recalls"... and wouldn't you know it, another one today! -

Very nice! But a few questions... 1. Why didn't you paint the wood edging on the sides a much lighter color, to match the real car as seen in the photo you posted? 2. Can you post a little more detail on exactly how you built the roof rack?
