How to "Weather" a Dirt Track Midget.
Harry P. replied to 2002p51's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Seems to me that spraying on the "dirt" straight at the front of the car with an airbrush (the same direction the dirt would hit the car in real life) would give a pretty close approximation of dirt/dust buildup. If you also want to add clumps of mud you could make a thick "mud" paste and dab it on to the nerf bars, axle, windscreen, etc. with a brush. -
Back to the subject of urethanes for a moment... There are all those scary warnings on the product label for a reason! Urethane paint is nasty stuff that can cause harm when not handled with the appropriate precautions. Of course, ultimately we all make our own decisions, and if someone wants to use urethane paint on a model without the proper precautions and equipment, that's their right and their call... but to know the facts about the stuff before you dive in is a good thing, isn't it? Doesn't knowing the facts before you decide make for an informed decision? Instead of ripping the guys who are trying to tell you the facts about the stuff, maybe you should take what they are telling you seriously and think about whether or not the risks and potential harm that urethanes can cause are worth it to you. Like I said, ultimately it's your decision... but having the facts before you decide is a good thing.

Brand new 1987 Buick GNX...
Harry P. replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Funny you should mention 8-tracks... I just heard on the radio the other day that 8-tracks are making a comeback with kids. Apparently kids think they're really cool, and they have become somewhat of a hot fad lately, like vinyl LPs were a few years ago. What goes around comes around, I guess... or everything old is new again, or whatever cliché fits... -
I also like your two-tone color scheme... subtle but very cool. You've put a lot of work into this kit... keep at it. Once it's finished you'll enjoy it even more, knowing how much work was involved in getting it built.

If you don't care what anyone else thinks, why post photos for others to see?

It's cute...

I know... I was a member there for years!

Year, make and model. PM me with your answers, don't post answers or hints here! The answer: 1954 Denzel (not Washington!) 1500S

Yes, you're right as far as that goes. But the larger point is, if someone posts a legitimate question (as in "how shiny should shiny be?") and people weigh in with their comments and opinions regarding the question asked... why should anyone be "offended" by those opinions? Isn't the whole point of a forum to discuss issues??? And isn't it completely obvious that we will not all have the same exact opinion??? The "hey, just build for yourself and don't worry what anyone thinks" attitude is fine... I actually agree with it... but if we're talking about a particular issue, everyone's opinion counts, and nobody needs to remind us that it's "just a hobby." We already know that. To complain about people offering their opinions here is flying in the face of what this forum is all about in the first place.

I'll take your word for it. But all I see of racing (NASCAR, Indy, F1, drags, etc.) is cars that are nothing but rolling billboards, every square inch covered with sponsor logos... even the driver's suits are plastered with logos from head to foot. Maybe the "minor leagues" of racing aren't completely sponsor-driven (yet...), but anything that qualifies as "major league" racing is nothing but advertising.

Mark, we've been around and around on that point. I agree with you 100%... false praise and unearned flattery is pointless. And I agree that criticism should be combined with pointers or tips on how to best solve the problem noted. But the reality is that we have members who post their work but are completely unable to handle criticism of any kind... even when made with the best of intentions. And too many times members take well-intentioned comments and criticism as a personal attack, and they feel threatened and/or insulted. It's gotten to the point that many members would rather not say anything than risk the "flame wars" that can erupt when someone takes honest criticism the wrong way. Unfortunately, that's the way it works on a public forum...

Italeri Freightliner FLC
Harry P. replied to gautreau's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
If you can build up the cab beforehand and still manage to fit the interior, you should build it and then paint it as a unit. You'll have to take a look at the instructions to see if building up the cab will cause any problems later on in the assembly process. -
And you remember that this is a model car discussion board? And people bring up topics for discussion? And we talk about stuff here? And we don't always have 100% agreement on every topic all the time? The whole point of this place is for us to get together and talk about the hobby... good, bad, whatever. That's why we're all here! If all we do here is pat each other on the back and sing kum-baya... what the heck is the point???

I had a feeling you would say that, but I had to ask! Imagine... running a race car without sponsor $$ helping out. No way that could ever happen today!

Interesting feature in today's newspaper auto section: Back in 1987, Boulevard Buick in Signal Hill, CA got a brand-new Buick GNX from GM for their showroom, car number 308 (out of a production run of 547 for the model year). Boulevard Buick paid GM $26,856 for the car, which stickered for $29,389. Back then the GNX was one of the hottest cars around, and 1987 turned out to be the last year of production. Some buyers were willing to pay far above sticker for one. You got the zero-to-sixty time of a Porsche 911 for about half the price. Anyway, Boulevard Buick knew how coveted the GNX was, and how people were willing to pay thousands over sticker to snag one, and they hoped to make a handsome profit on the highly desirable new car by auctioning it off to the highest bidder. The dealership placed an ad in the L.A. Times, and even hired an accounting firm to keep track of the bidding. But things didn't go the way the dealership figured. They didn't get a single bid. Not one. Long story short... Boulevard Buick still has that brand-new 1987 Buick GNX sitting in their showroom today, some 23 years later. It has less than 200 miles on the odometer (the mileage mostly from driving to the shop area for regular oil changes) and the owners of the dealership say it's no longer for sale. Dealership owner Brad Willingham says that now it's a part of the dealership's heritage. BTW... GM refuses to honor the "new car" warranty!!!

My only question: no sponsor decals???

And what have we all learned from this little exercise? A few things... 1. We've learned that yes, there were errors in the Hudson. 2. We've learned that the people who had the "nerve" to speak up and point out the errors are responsible for the fact that Moebius will now correct those errors as best they can. 3. We've learned that Moebius cares about its products and its customers. Posting the photos of the Hornet publicly and taking comments and criticisms to heart–actually acting on those comments–tells us a lot about the kind of people who are involved in the project, and what it tells us is all good. 4. The most important lesson, IMO: The people who pointed out those errors are not enemies of the hobby (as some have suggested) and were not bashing anyone. They were just being observant and honest in regards to what they saw in the Hornet.. not giving opinions of the people involved. And their opinions, comments and suggestions regarding the model are ultimately going to result in a better kit for all of us.

Are you a "scale snob?"
Harry P. replied to ian ashton's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You'd need an awfully big pool... -
How can you argue with such crystal-clear logic? Anyway, final vote 55-11 for REAL. And it is! Real, that is...

That looks fantastic so far! Your added detail really makes a big difference.

What are your Projects for 2011
Harry P. replied to Clay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My projects for 2011? Who knows! I make it up as I go along. When I see a kit that gets my motor running I buy it and build it... but I have no way of knowing what that kit (or kits) will be until I see them! -
Nice project, Hans... should be pretty cool!

Without a doubt your paintwork is the best I have ever seen.
