Beautiful build Jon. Great work in the engine compartment..!! Great job overall. I love it.

Thanks again to everyone for all of your encouraging words. James, I've had those little chrome bullets in my parts stash for a long time, but I don't remember what kit they came out of. I wish I had a bunch more of them.

Great model Ian. Nice job. Ummm..... did you forget taillights..??

Thanks again to everyone for all your kind comments and encouraging words. At the rate that I've been able to knock out my finished builds lately, I should have the '58 Caddy Eldo done in a couple of weeks.

Thank you everyone. Dan, to be honest, I completely overlooked that outer chrome ring on the grille...!!! I was so concerned about making the inner grille look good that I just goofed on it. It kinda looks OK without it though...

Thanks Codie and Jim. Jim, MV lenses are small, round glass lenses you can find in the train section of a well-stocked hobby shop. They come in different sizes and colors (Red, Amber, Green, Blue and Clear. I've used them, depending on the size and color of the lens, for headlights, turn signals, taillights, backup lights, dashboard and console indicator lights, and my favorite, the smallest blue ones, for taillight blue dots. The little blue ones run about $2 or $3 for a pkg. of 4 lenses. They're not the cheapest... but they sure look great. To use the blue dot ones, I drill a small depression in the face of the taillight lens where you want the blue dot to be, using a drill bit just a little larger than the size of the blue lens. Then put a small drop of clear enamel for the glue in the depression with a toothpick, and then put the blue MV lens in. Let the enamel dry thoroughly and install your taillight lens on the model. To me these lenses look a lot more realistic than other things like blue sequin centers. Once you've used them, you'll love them.

glueing headlights/tailights
Ramfins59 replied to allecb's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've been using Model Master clear enamel to glue in headlight and taillight lenses, along with any turn signal lenses in some kits. I apply it with a toothpick around the edges of the bezels. If you've ever fought with a paint jar lid to get it off, it's proof that dried paint makes an excellent glue. -
Hey gang. Well the fifth entry into my completed stable of 1958 cars is finally done. Here she is.. . I am TOTALLY happy with the way the custom grille came out. I cut some PE honeycomb mesh grille material (from MCG) to fit in place of the molded-in plastic grille. I glued it in place with CA glue to some thin evergreen plastic strips I attached to the sides of the grille opening. I CA glued the chrome horsecollar grille surround to the mesh and then CA glued 4 small chrome bullets to the mesh in the center of the horsecollar. I got the idea from a mild custom Edsel I googled while looking for reference pictures. I attached a pair of Lake Pipes (by Bob Dudek), a second fender mirror I robbed from the Edsel kit I have (without the continental kit), a pair of dummy spotlights and a trunk mounted, swept back antenna from my parts stash. The skirts and continental kit comes in the Edsel "Ultimate" kit. I also added MV lens blue dots to the taillights and an aluminum tubing exhaust tip. Here's a shot of the engine compartment. I used a chrome air cleaner from my parts stash for a little bling. I added an M.A.D. pre-wired distributor, a fuel line, a brake line from the master cylinder and a pin head cap, battery cables and an aluminum radiator cap. The heater hoses came in the kit. I'm pretty happy with the way this model turned out. Like I said in the WIP thread, it's not my best paint job nor the best BMF work, but it'll do...... "close enough for Gov't. work"...LOL. Now I can straighten up the workbench and get serious on the '58 Caddy Eldorado that's next in line. Stay tuned for that one.

Thanks a lot for all your encouraging comments everyone. Yes John, the foiling does get to be a chore on the 50's land yachts that I've been building. I have to replenish my supply of fresh BMF. The last couple of sheets that I opened were so crinkled and the foil tears where the crinkles are. It's so bad that I can't use about a third of the sheets... what a waste..!! Grant, the car should be finished tomorrow and I'll post pictures then. Tonight I mounted the body to the interior / chassis assembly and installed all of the engine compartment doo-dads and details. Pretty much all that's left to do is attaching most of the chrome stuff on the body, the continental kit and lake pipes. David, the kit glass has locator pins to hold them in but I always use a couple of small drops of non-fogging CA glue to tack them in and then go around the edges with Elmer"s Glue using a toothpick. Thanks Dan and Bill. Dan I actually can't wait to finish this one up so I can REALLY get going on the '58 Caddy from our trade. I've started work on the Caddy's engine and chassis but that's all aside now so I can finish up this Edsel.

Are You a "One & Done" Builder?
Ramfins59 replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
buy multiples of some kits if I particularly like that car, but I've never actually built a second one of anything yet. I've got too many to go through for the first time around. I sometimes wind up stealing parts out of the second kit for other builds. -
Thanks Tom, Mike John and Don. Love your comment on the "lumpy vinyl roof Tom. Yeah John, it's coming along. I'm hoping to have it finished up by tomorrow sometime. OK we've got an update today. The clearcoat is polished, the BMF work is done, the paint is touched up where needed, the headliner is painted and the glass is in. Pics follow... The paint job is not the best I've ever done, nor is the BMF job, but it'll have to do. I started gluing on the headlights, side grilles, taillights & backup lights. I also glued in the PE honeycomb grille mesh where the kit's molded in grille was. I glued the chrome horsecollar grille to that, and then glued on 5 small chrome bullets in the center of that onto the mesh. IT LOOKS SO FREAKIN' COOL...!!! Sorry, no pictures of it yet...... you'll have to wait for the Under Glass Pics for THAT reveal. Another day and it'll be done. Thanks for following along. I got the idea for the bullets in the grille from a Googled picture of a mild custom '58 Edsel, which is how I'm making this one.

Beautiful model Thomas. Great job.

It's bad enough that you're actually building this crazy vehicle... but putting decals on 1/25 scale spark plug wires......!!!!!! And cutting the top off a QTip to make Beer Foam......!!!!!! You are SOOOOO far out of your mind John...!!! But keep it up man..... you've got us all mesmerized by your outrageous and outstanding work.

Hey John. The paint came out nice..!! The 2 Tone Dark Green and Arctic White looks really good. Only one small spot needed a touch up. I'm still polishing out the clearcoat and then I'll do the BMF work. If I get it all done quickly enough I should be able to post some more pics tomorrow.

Looking good John. It's about time you got back into building.

Very nice looking Vette Ray.
