More interest and more replies than honest-to-goodness model car stuff Never underestimate... -
Thanks for the Supra tire trick, now the aftermarket needs to start offering modern street radials as there's a lot of Revell customers that want to upgrade and seemingly nobody out there filling the vacuum. One never knows why Revell does what it does. The stripes over the top of the car would be easy enough to trim the black strip away, but the side stripes would still be wrong.

Revell does some great stuff and they're not afraid to spend some money (like the all-new body tool for Mustang), but then they inexplicably allow worst-in-the-industry stock tires to be included in their Mustangs. They should be ashamed of that, but clearly someone in the chain of command doesn't think it's a problem

The train wreck was cleaned up, nothing left to see here but a mystery post -
More! The Hertz fender emblem is tiny. I can't read it w/o magnification, but my camera can: Stock wheel/tire. Tire looks too tall, sidewall is far too plain. With AMT Supra tire; looks more natural. Model will definitely need to be lowered to look right. With the Mercedes wheels. I may very well use these for my Shelby GT variant; will need to get them a lot shinier.

Revell recently issued their '06 Shelby GT-H, the black and gold car that you could rent at Hertz. They say it's got an automatic, but the kit pieces are still the GT manual transmission. Some have noted that a few very higher-up execs w/Hertz had Shelby GT-H's built with manual transmissions, so let's pretend this is one of those ultra-rare cars that the public couldn't buy, even at an auction A couple of us ACME Mustang fanatics gave the kit a going over yesterday and noticed that they tooled an entirely new body for the model. The front fascia is separate, the rear diffuser/front fascia are shared with the California Special version of the GT (never know, could be another variant from Revell). The hood is GT-H. They included a new parts tree w/GT-H specific parts, and a new chrome tree with the new wheels/grilles. It looks pretty decent, they did a good job with updating this kit. The wheels look small, the tires (shared w/GT) look too tall. The wheels scale out to 18", but just look small. They seem correct for the GT-H but not quite right for the newer 18" Bullitts. They'd be perfect for an '01-'04 GT. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking, and break this into two posts. My plans are to build the GT-H in white w/silver stripes sans rear spoiler; basically an '07 Shelby GT with the GT-H hood and silver stripes from the GT kit. GT-H on left, 06 GT on right: Closeup of K&N and side scoop: Strut brace on left, air box on right: Stock wheel with AMT Supra tire on left (thanks to whomever tipped us off to this trick), stock wheel/tire in center, Maisto Mercedes Benz SLK on right.

Some people have experienced this with Tamiya clear over Tamiya paint, if applied at the wrong time. If a base coat and clear coat don't chemically meld, if they're different enough and cure at a different rate this kind of thing can happen. I had it happen in the 80's with Tamiya acrylic clear and transparent colors, they looked great when shot but they shrank so much as they dried they cracked so badly the bodies looked like the bottom of a dry lake bed. I do a lot of decanting/airbrushing these days, including Tamiya, and I add Tamiya clear into the last couple coats of Tamiya color so that I don't have any potential problems. The metallic silver was probably not completely cured and/or the clearcoat didn't match chemically so it cracked as it shrank and dried. One of those things that might not happen all the time. Try to stick with one system/brand if possible; use a clear that's designed for the base coat. Even that's not always the answer if the clear was applied in the wrong window of time.

The original VW Beetle...
Zoom Zoom replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I saw a video on "Lenos Garage" recently where he was driving a Tatra; Jay seemed to really like the car. I've only seen a handful of them in my entire life. Lenos Garage Tatra T87 -
The original VW Beetle...

Those bodacious Tatras Didn't Tucker steal from them as well? Most cars that are too unique tend to be the "Azteks" of their respective generations. Stray too far from center, and it gets ugly fast. That's why most cars end up looking alike. -

A Dodge & a Nissan? Magnissimo? R34 Magnum? Am I nuts?!
Zoom Zoom replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Some more progress; 2-toned, clearcoated, buffed, some of the black trim applied. -
I have to say this is one of the coolest customs I've ever seen. Just the right modifications, perfect color combo, nothing goofy, everything fits, workmanship looks top-notch, perfect stance/rolling stock, interesting subject matter...what a killer car!
-
As I said before, to me it was easy. The only model out there of a Caballero is an R & R resin that even Bill Geary or Juha Airio couldn't make look that good, and it's not the kind of subject one would expect a custom large-scale model of. My other method of research proved particularly easy as well Still love the car...would love to build a model of it...I personally like the HT styling of the Caballero much better than the Nomad from the same era. But building an R & R requires a lot of R & R afterwards

A Dodge & a Nissan? Magnissimo? R34 Magnum? Am I nuts?!
Zoom Zoom replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in WIP: Model Cars
A bit more progress; the body is painted silver w/one clearcoat. I'll be masking/painting the lower aero pieces gunmetal and then shooting more clear. Took awhile to get to this point, and the bodywork will never be as precise as I'd like Not sure if I'll leave the hood slats silver or paint them flat black; their surfaces aren't really smooth even after block sanding so flat black might do a good job of hiding that. -
Revell Shelby GT500 and Shelby GT350H kits
Zoom Zoom replied to gasman's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'm not sure if Revell will have any more announcements this year or not; they seem to have quit making announcements just for a show season, and more on their own schedule. Not sure a production Camaro SS would be a good idea or not; they look so similar to the concept I'm not sure if the market is already saturated by "new" Camaros already, even if they're the concept. I do hope they kit the '10 Mustang, and can't imagine why the new STI and Civic Type R and EVO X haven't been announced by Fujimi. What would really be cool would be Fujimi using the GTI as a basis for the new Scirocco. I can understand why the GTR was done; the kits all on the market when the car debuted (at least in the US). Wish Revell could do that again...the Challenger kit will be trailing the production car by about 6 mos; and if they had a ZR1 kit ready when the 1:1 was available that would be amazing. Monogram had their first '84 Corvette kit on the shelves the exact same day it was released to the public. Somehow I doubt they'll ever get that kind of timing back -
Revell Shelby GT500 and Shelby GT350H kits
Zoom Zoom replied to gasman's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'll have my GT-H this weekend, will see if I still have those Supra tires in my stash. The Revell tires are horrific. The GT500KR is due in late September according to Tower Hobbies, Bullitt '68 and '08 in late November. Just enough time to crank a couple more Mustangs out before the '09 Challenger kits arrive Hopefully we'll have time to crank out a Challenger or two before Revell (hopefully) gets us a new Corvette ZR1. -
Has anybody heard of Draggin Plastic?

And amazingly enough...they're back on Feebay again this week, with a new name and only a feedback score of 2. BEWARE! They have taken money from a ton of people who have never gotten their items. They've been kicked off of Feebay multiple times. Those dogdishes are much, much smaller than Cadillac sombrero full wheelcovers. -
They were just reissued again Hobbysearch Hobbylink

Wow, that turned out killer Wish I had another kit to do like this. The custom tricks really work. Saw a baby blue one on the road last Saturday morning...easy to forget how tiny this car is!

This one was almost too easy. Nice subject, whether real or model

Anyone else have this problem ?
Zoom Zoom replied to Dave Wood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They now say to store it in the refrigerator. I got a fresh sheet a few months back w/o any wrinkles/cracks, and it's in the fridge. It's a big problem. I really hope that they figure it out; all the alternatives to good BMF aren't as good. But finding good BMF these days is a ###### shoot. -
I have never clearcoated BMF and contrary to what people believe, it won't just "fall off" unless it's already got too little adhesive when you apply it. If it's going to fall off, it happens then. I like to be able to polish it out after being applied; this looks far more realistic than if it's clearcoated. Models I've detailed with BMF since 1981 (when I discovered it) still look great. Try both methods, and whatever floats your boat, stick with it. It will work either way, so you are the best person to make the determination what looks/works best for you.

Looks great I've seen one Cayman in Macadamia, that color is amazing how it glows in the sunglight w/o looking like a cheesy flip-flop paint. You see the paint chip in a Porsche brochure and it doesn't convey how killer it looks in the sunlight. CAL, here's my GT3, painted TS-23 w/custom GT3 decals:
