Car Repair Ripoffs 1: Dealerships
Ace-Garageguy replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Many OHC engines of recent manufacture have automatic lash-adjusters, which are nothing but very small hydraulic lifters, and the clearances never need to be checked. The Chrysler 2.4 in the PT Cruiser is an example of this design type. BUT...some overhead cam engines DO require periodic checking and adjustment, however, and failure to keep up with the maintenance can cause grief...like rough running, hard starting, and eventually, burned valves. Some rocker-arm equipped OHC engines (usually single overhead cam layouts) may use adjusting screws and nuts similar to pushrod-type engines (examples being Honda Fit, 1996-2000 Honda Civic...and many other Honda engines). Other SOHC engines like the old Datsun 240 /260 / 280Z and 2-liter Pinto have a different type adjuster screw / lock under the rocker arms, and some may use an eccentric on the end of the rocker (BMW 2002 for example). Many double overhead cam engine designs employ replaceable lash-pads or shims either under the follower bucket (early Jag inline 6 engines, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, and many others), which require camshaft removal to service, or they may use lash pads that ARE the tops of the cam followers and can be serviced with a special tool NOT requiring cam removal (the Fiat 128 SOHC and the 124 DOHC engines are examples of these). And SOME old OHC engine designs MAY in fact require cylinder head removal, and VERY CAREFUL replacement and machining of the valve seats to achieve the correct valve lash (Aston Martin DB2-DBS6, for example). NOTE: I do NOT know what system of valve lash adjustment YOUR Civic employs. NOTE 2: Just for reference, here's the valve lash adjustment procedure for a 2008 Civic with the 1.8 R18A2 -

This product seems to be pretty much immune to the problem... -
Yeah...for two or three times the $$ that you can buy the exact same set for somewhere else... I used to buy almost exclusively Snap-on, but they've become as big a rip as 3M.

Gluing Different Types of Plastic Together
Ace-Garageguy replied to Miatatom's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Some types of plastic will NOT glue with any conventional adhesives. For instance, bondo spreaders are made from polyethylene because nothing much will stick to it. You may be SOL (and Harbor Freight fast-setting epoxy is close to useless; it is very LOW STRENGTH even under ideal conditions). PVC requires a solvent-type glue, or a HIGH-STRENGTH epoxy, with the surface roughened first. -
Just be advised...a lot of Harbor Freight stuff is crapp. I've had regular-size drill bits from them go dull drilling one hole in aluminum. Granted...SOMETIMES you get decent quality there, but if you actually want to USE your tools, you're probably better off springing for a few extra bucks. NOTE: ANYBODY FEEL FREE to let us know if the micro-bits from Harbor Freight will drill more than two or three holes in styrene. If they WILL, I'll go get some myself.

What made the Edsel fail ?
Ace-Garageguy replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
1) Weird styling by "committee". Granted they look cool now, but back then, the styling was a joke. 2) Excessive reliance on "focus group" input, rather than relying on professional car-guy input. Other examples of the genre: 3) Lotsa quality control issues 4) Pricing competed with Ford's own models, potential buyers didn't know exactly WHAT it was supposed to be -
https://www.micromark.com/mini-hand-tools/drill-bits-pin-vises The 26104 set works well on plastic, but I always center-punch to start holes. and only use a pin-vise.

Car Repair Ripoffs 1: Dealerships
Ace-Garageguy replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Depends on the truck, but on some of the Fords, it's SOP. To say I was really disappointed in the lack of forethought that made this necessary is something of an understatement. -

It appears SOME manufacturers MAY have addressed the tire-melt problem. Regarding the post immediately above... I just received an OLD PRODUCTION MPC Honda 750 kit, never assembled. The TIRE tooling is identical to the recent reissues of both the street and racing Honda 750s, and the ancient ('70-'71 issue) Bronson Harley 900 Sportster. On the SPORTSTER, the tires had melted into the rims and shrunk, as noted above. The OLD production, never-built Honda 750's tires have also SHRUNK almost 1/4" in outside-diameter. The recent REISSUES appear to be a different material from the earlier issues...but only time will tell if they shrink or melt the rims. Interestingly, SOME vintage Revell 1/8 scale motorcycles have very heavy solid rubber tires that don't shrink OR melt the rims, but the kits may also contain HOLLOW vinyl tires that have completely disintegrated.

I'm not certain if that's more damning of the whole concept of marketing, or of the mindlessly-consuming moronic masses. I mean...really...what kind of person thinks "oh boy oh boy, I have to run out and buy something because it's associated with the Kardashians"? Brain-dead, for all practical purposes.

Very nice. I've been wanting to do one of those trucks, but never found the right wheels. I remember the film well. Pretty cool, sir.

Well, it ain't really "we", any more than "we" invented the airplane. It's a tiny fraction of the best and brightest. Thankfully (for the time being, at least) we live in a country where significant achievement like this is still possible. And hopefully, it will inspire others to aspire to accomplish something exceptional.

Then how do you account for what's in the heads of people who watch "reality" TV?

Pretty kool.
