  1. Man does that build bring back memories of a whole 'nother era of cars. Fantastic work. May I ask what specific gold paint you used?
  2. I hope you'll take the time to elaborate on whatever issues you experienced when spraying the Aztec acrylics. A few months ago I came across a YouTube video showing a builder spraying it with what appears to be fairly good results. Despite what he stated about using slightly higher than normal air pressure, the paint flowed out well and dried quickly without any orange peel or other perceptible flaws. Since then I've been waiting to use them on one of my current projects.
  3. ...and what's the best email address to use?
  4. Very nice work all the way through. This will definitely be worth watching. Looks like you nailed the color for the valve covers. Would you mind telling me which exact paint you used on them?
  5. The entire piece is plated. Thanks for being specific on the Sharpie recommendation.
  6. My one attempt at detailing with Tamiya acrylic paint was a disaster. I was used to the way enamels can be "worked" with a brush, while the Tamiya paint was more or less a one-pass proposition. Given what I've got to work around, Bob's answer looks like it may be the best way to go.
  7. I'm building the AMT '65 Galaxie, which was initially issued with clear red tail lights. At some point those went away, and I haven't been able to find them on ebay or Modelhaus over the last couple years. I'm considering trying to replicate the red lenses with glass stain, as it's translucent, but since I don't know anything about brands/quality etc, I'd like to see some pics if you've done this.
  8. Since I'm a little late to the party, I assume all the applicable superlatives have already been used, so I'll submit this meme I created instead.
  9. I'm going to be using the engine from AMT's '60 Skyliner in another car and I want to make some slight improvements, such as using an actual metal tube and "rubber" fuel lines to the carbs. I've found a number of pictures showing part of the metal ''feed tube'' for the dual 4-bbls, but the oil filler tube blocks off some detail of how it connects to the fuel line. Anybody got a good close-up shot they can share? Bonus question: is that black fuel filter a factory piece? I guess I assumed they were just a metallic shade.
  10. What an incredible collection! I like 'em all, but I was really drawn to that ragtop Cadillac. Meanwhile, my poor brain is still trying to come to terms with the fact that you built them all in one year. Two questions, if you don't mind: 1) What paint was used on the Lincoln body? 2) How did you add posable steering to the '70 impala?
  11. I despise promo-type chassis such as the one in AMT's '63 Corvette, and I wondered if one of MPC's C3 ('68 - '82) chassis might be an easy drop-in fix for most '63 builds, with the exception of Bloomington gold-type restorations. Yes, technically the 'Vette didn't get front and rear disc brakes till '65, but the chassis didn't change drastically through '82, and MPC's offers some nicely done engraving, separate rotating half-shafts and posable front wheels. Just curious if anyone has tried it and can tell me whether the wheelbase is close and if a lot of work needs to be done to fit with AMT's interior bucket.
  12. Here's what I noticed: You and AFX took the time to research the correct color for the block & heads and do some nice detailing, where a less experienced builder might've just gone with Ford blue and called it good. In addition, I got to see both variants built, and now I'll have to make a choice. Thanks guys!
  13. I'm considering getting one of these engines for another project partly because I'm intrigued by the induction setups AMT included, and I wanted to see how they look when assembled by good modelers. If you have pics without the air cleaner installed, even better. Thanks!
  14. Agreed, it's a garbled mess. I hope he reposts it soon.
  15. I've got a thread on here asking for advice on buying a new air compressor, and I just happened to see this ad today. It seems to have a couple of the things I'm looking for (quiet, lower cost), but since I know virtually nothing about air compressors, I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable will point out any downsides that might make it a less than ideal solution. https://www.menards.com/main/tools-hardware/power-tools-accessories/air-compressors-pneumatic-tools-accessories/air-compressors/masterforce-reg-ultra-quiet-1-8-gallon-portable-electric-trim-air-compressor/3301511/p-1444423543348-c-12910.htm?tid=-2912616006167889150&ipos=1
  16. My only other international purchase was several years ago when I bought some aqueous Gunze Sangyo paints from a store in Australia because they had been pulled from the US market. That shipment took under two weeks. Based solely on that, I assumed shipments from most centers of business (in this case Taiwan) would be equally prompt. Obviously you know a lot more about this stuff than I could ever hope to. Very informative. Thanks!
  17. I prefer to use enamels for almost all of the detailing I do, and Tamiya has a few enamel colors in their 10 ml bottles that don't seem to be available in bottle or tinlet (Humbrol) form from other mfrs. (I tend to avoid purchasing rattle cans whenever possible). I believe the Ebay seller I bought these paints from is in Hong Kong, and while their listing does stipulate that the product will probably take well over a month to arrive, that just seems curious given Hong Kong's status as hub for international business. I think Marco Polo walked from Italy to China in that amount of time. The shipping/tracking seems kinda iffy too. No known international shippers (DHL etc), just something called Winit, which doesn't appear to offer much info on the package's status: Tracking details Winit tracking #ID18104603566348TW Dec 10, 2018 17:01pm Picked up Package from Origin Dec 2, 2018 04:27am PST Tracking number provided I ran the tracking # through their site and wasn't able to glean much except, again, a very loose time frame for delivery. In retrospect, I probably should have asked this board if there was a better source for these paints, but here we are.
  18. Several aftermarket companies offer distributors, wires and specific caps (HEI, etc) but there seems to be a lack of vacuum advance canisters. A small detail admittedly, but one that can make a difference.
  19. I currently live in a tiny town with no real hobby shops nearby, so I'm looking for a one-stop online business that carries all the usual model building supplies, including such things as sheet and strip styrene plastic, and a wide range of paints. Also, it wouldn't hurt if their prices were somewhere between low and very reasonable. TIA for all helpful responses.
  20. To me, they look like they'd be a far better way to pick up small objects than trying to use your fingers. In my case, I plan to use them to pick up clear headlight lenses and position them as accurately as possible in the bezels. (If you've ever seen the effect haphazardly placed headlight lenses can have on the "realism" of a model kit, you know what I'm trying to avoid) I'm aware that any part I'll want to pick up with these will need to have a certain amount of smooth surface, and I'm sure you guys have a dozen cheaper ways to accomplish tasks like this, but I just wanted to give them a try.
  21. What I'm looking for is basically a short plastic stick (+/-4 inches?) with a very small suction cup at one end. If memory serves, Micro-Mark used to sell these in packs of 10 or so, but I don't see them now. Any links would be appreciated.
  22. I'm in need of a new compressor for my airbrushes, and I'd like to hear what you guys recommend. As you might expect, I have a few requirements it will need to meet, given my current circumstances. 1) Needs to have a water trap 2) Adjustable pressure 3) Fairly quiet. Smaller would be better. 4) If possible, under $100.00.
  23. This will be almost 100% factory stock, so I'm looking for period-correct whitewalls. AMT's original standard Firestone tires are OK as far as height, but are too narrow for a full size car. Decades ago, MPC offered a Goodyear bias ply whitewall, which would probably be ideal if it was available in resin, but I haven't come across the whitewall version in any of my searches. I've heard Moebius has a decent whitewall, but having never held, let alone seen one up close, don't know if they'll fit AMT wheels without modifications. Pegasus whitewalls are not being considered as they are intentionally short. IIRC they are intended for low riders.
  24. Big C3 fan here, so I was anxious to see how this kit builds up. Looks like I should get going on mine sooner rather than later. Couple questions, if you don't mind. 1) What exact paint did you use on the engine block? 2) Are the "rings" on the tail light lenses decals or the results of very careful painting?
