Years ago, when I first discovered Humbrol enamels, I learned through model magazines and online forums that these paints are easier to airbrush when you reduce them with cheap lacquer thinner. My own experiences back that up, but it seems model companies are now using cheaper grades of plastic that are more susceptible to lacquer crazing than before. Can I continue shooting these by my preferred method if I switch to something other than hobby-level primers?

Wow, that's just flat-out gorgeous! Would you mind listing the mfr & p/n (ex Testors #2704) for the red and charcoal paints?

I can't be the only one hoping someone (Moebius? Revell?) might issue a better '71-'74 AMC Javelin. The Johan kits were passable for the time, but came with a previous generation V8 (Imagine buying a '70 Mustang kit and finding it had a Y-block engine) as well as a mediocre chassis. Also, no fans of the '70 Cougar? I'm guessing MPC's version is the only game in town there, and they are virtually impossible to find, not to mention prohibitively expensive.

Years ago, Testors/Model Master offered a shade called Kandy Scarlet. It's a fairly dark red, but as the name indicates, it's translucent. Maybe shoot it over gray primer and finish with semigloss or dullcoat. Looks like it's available on ebay for about $3.00.

Since the Johan hearses are hard to find, and fairly expensive if you do, I was wondering what it would take to convert the Ghostbusters ambulance into a realistic hearse. Anybody done this?

Wow, seeing how nicely this turned out makes me wonder why I never got around to building mine. That paint just rocks, and the vinyl top was a great addition. Any chance we could see some engine and/or chassis pics?

I always look forward to your builds because of your creativity, your emphasis on accuracy and your ability to obtain fantastic results like this from mediocre kits. All this and great photography make for compelling posts.

A friend of my recently bought her first house. Since she lives several hundred miles away, I decided to surprise her by sending a housewarming bouquet. I contacted her sister for advice on flowers & colors etc, and she recommended something from ProFlowers. When I placed the order, I specified Saturday delivery since the recipient is a teacher & I thought there'd be a better chance of her being home to accept delivery. As luck would have it, she was out all Saturday morning, so the UPS driver left the bouquet on her uncovered front porch during a heavy snow storm. Long story short, by the time she got home, they were so buried she didn't spot them till the next day. I contacted ProFlowers and all they would offer me was 25% off my next order. Guess what 25% of nothing is?

Looks like you overcame all the obstacles and ended up with a great build. Just out of curiosity, what issues were giving you fits?

I'm considering these more expensive units because the Amazon reviews for most of the less costly visors list some common problems across the board, namely cheap acrylic lenses that produce distorted vision, break easily and are hard to change, and poorly designed plastic straps and fasteners that make it hard to keep the visor in place. There are already enough things in this hobby that can cause aggravation. The last thing I need to do is add more to that list.

Reading some of the comments on Amazon led me to try and move up a notch or two in quality over the cheaper LS model. I'm liking where this is going. I remember these cars in their heyday - one of Chrysler's biggest sellers in years. I'm familiar with most of the Humbrol line, but I can't find a listing for "burgundy". Would you mind letting me know the two-digit number stamped on the tinlet's cap?

I've been looking at these and trying to find the best one for a reasonable price (basically under $100.00) for a week or so, relying primarily on reviews (mostly Amazon) to get an idea of which units are worth considering. My basic parameters were 1) LED lighting, 2) 5" or larger glass diopter lens, 3) adjustable light levels. It's been a little frustrating 'cuz quite a few that I looked at were called out for shoddy design and/or poor materials. This one seems to have almost everything I want but the 1.75 magnification seems low. I'm kinda intrigued by what I've seen of this paint, but I wanted to ask those of you who've used it a question or two. Is it translucent enough that the shade of primer used will affect the actual color? For example, we know that certain primers make reds "pop" (Tamiya pink primer comes to mind). I'm guessing that most of you have sprayed this paint over a white primer, but I'd love to see pics of it sprayed over a much darker primer. I currently live in a tiny town with no real hobby shops within who knows how many miles, so I don't have direct access to these paints, and can't do my own spoon tests to find out. TIA for any pics (especially outdoor pics) of this paint over various shades of primer.

Claes, thanks for your response and pictures. After seeing my post pass 350 views without any replies, I was beginning to wonder if anyone had bought these wheels and made efforts to make them look like the 1:1 items. It wasn't like I had any doubts about the quality of any product from the Fireball lineup, but it was nice to see them set up for installation on some lucky kit.

As most of you know, Chief Joseph makes some incredible stuff, as we've seen recently with the number of modelers using his carbs to improve the accuracy of a build. I noticed some time back that he had a line of 5-slot wheels, a design I've liked since the first time I saw a set on a car. I don't recall seeing these in use on here, but as my title states, I'd like to, especially if painted or plated to look like the 1:1 units.

1) I have an idea for a custom license plate. IIRC, there's at least one place that specializes in creating items like this. Anybody got a name and/or a link? 2) Does anyone make a flat P/E or resin plate I could attach a decal license plate to?
