freakshow12 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I just built a little friction into my hinges. They will stay open or closed
microwheel Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Ditto what Fred said. Nicely done on the trunk and doors Tim. I'll try to find some time after the weekend to post ya up info on how I do my interior flocking. I got company coming for the weekend and have been spending the past few days getting things spruced up around here for them... The ole Honey Doooo list keeps growing lol.

I haven't had much time for anything lately... its been busy as can be, but I did do some little stuff here and there on the Chevelle. I'll post some pics up later. Tim
microwheel Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 (edited) No problem Tim, I'm pretty much the same on the Nova builds lol.. A little piddling here and there but not alot of bench time. I hope maybe I'll get a little in tomorrow. But it depends on how my honey do list goes. Edited May 13, 2015 by microwheel
taaron76 Posted May 14, 2015 Author Posted May 14, 2015 Some down time in between helps me formulate some ideas, like do I want to throw in a roll cage and the fuel cell from one of my NASCAR un-builts. It also give me time to order a few things here and there. I really like some of the things you did on your Nova engine, so I gotta order some of those T-fittings and a couple other things. No hurry I guess... I redid the trunk hinges, the first set was too big to incorporate any styrene and it wouldn't close right. I also added some sheet styrene to the underside of the trunk to clean it up a little and hide the hinges as best as I could. It may not look like the factory, but it will do for the first build attempting to hinge anything. I will probably flock the trunk floor and throw in a factory spare tire, unless I use the NASCAR fuel cell. I might relocate the battery to the trunk as well... I haven't decided yet, but here is what I have so far. Here's a mockup of the NASCAR fuel cell. The hard part will be moving the filler hose to the rear, versus the side if I decide to go that route.
taaron76 Posted May 17, 2015 Author Posted May 17, 2015 (edited) The casting lines and junk in the chrome parts of this kit were pretty bad, so I bought some Spaz Stix gloss back and mirror chrome to rechrome the bumpers and chrome parts. I primed the parts, then Spaz Stix gloss black, the Spaz Stix mirror chrome. I didn't have good results at all... the gloss back would gloss up nice, then as it started to dry, it looked like an orange. I stripped the parts and used Tamiya gloss black and then 3 very fine coats of Spax Stix mirror chrome and after the first coat I thought, "YES!!! This beautiful!" The first dust coat looked so good, but after 15 minutes I put the second dust coat on and it got duller and duller. I threw another dust coat on, let it dry and buffed it out a little and it helped, but it is not anywhere near chrome. If anything, the parts came out like a nice polished stainless steel. I did the spoon test and get it to turn out really good, but no luck on the parts. Here are the results of using the Spaz Stix process, followed by a coat of clear. I think the exhaust and exhaust manifolds turned out best and they really do have a nice stainless steel look, but couldn't get the chrome shine I was looking for like what the spoon turned out like. After feeling a little down about how the Spaz Stix was supposed to turn out, I needed a success story for the day, so I decided to lay a few base coats down. I absolutely love this metallic black and under the lights it look so nice. This is after two base coats... I will probably clear coat it tomorrow or Monday. Since I stripped the chrome off of the bumpers, anticipating the Spaz Stix working out, I got some more ideas of going in a little bit different direction that I originally planned. I was scouring the internet and stumbled upon his beauty and figured out what I want the exterior to look like. It's bold, but different and I love it! This is a '67, but I think it will look great on the '65 as well. I will probably keep the grill and rear piece above the bumper chrome, but the bumpers will be the same color as the car, metallic black. I'm just waiting for a bunch of parts I ordered to get started on the engine and hopefully next week I will have some more progress. Tim Edited May 17, 2015 by taaron76
carcrazy19 Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 This is looking awesome.....real nice paint work . Can't wait to see more.
mustang1989 Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 She's a real beauty so far Tim. Hate to hear your luck with the Spaz Stix so far but I think your paint work made up the difference man.
microwheel Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 Morning Tim. I like the color choice for the body. As for spaz stix, strip it off the bumpers and grill and re-do them with alclad. Use testors enamel gloss black or Alclad's gloss black as a base coat and once you apply the alclad chrome, do not go over the chrome with a clear coat or sealer, it will dull it down. I've had the same issues with Spaz Stix in the past, so now I exclusively use Alclad chrome for re-chroming exterior trim like bumpers and grills. You just got to be careful about handling the parts once coated. So I alclad them, then set them aside in a safe place. That way I dont have to handle them until the very end of a build, and then I put them on the model last. As for your trunk, It is coming along nice. If you deside in the end to go with a fuel cell, I would either scratch make one, or look around on the net, there are a few aftermarket resin cast ones made for drag cars that may be just what you are looking for. Just do a google search for "1/25 resin cast fuel cells" and see what it comes up with. You should be able to find one that doesnt have a molded on filler tube, allowing you to add your own.
taaron76 Posted May 17, 2015 Author Posted May 17, 2015 Joe - thanks buddy! Spaz Stix worked great on the spoon... Bummer! Jim - I'm going to give the Alclad II a shot. I'm still undecided on painting the bumpers metallic black. I really like that reference pic I posted. As far as the fuel cell,I'm just going to leave it stock. Other than lowering it and adding new wheels, the rest will be stock. I'll use the KISS method. Keep It Simple, Stupid! Lol. Thanks for the tips! Tim
mustang1989 Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 Spaz Stix worked great on the spoon... Bummer! Well...........................it was worth a try.
taaron76 Posted May 17, 2015 Author Posted May 17, 2015 Well...........................it was worth a try. If you want a stainless look, it works great.
om617 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Is looking good, like the paint idea of the 67. If you use Alclad you will get the same result if you use clear after.
slusher Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Beautiful black finish. I really think the exhaust looks awesome..
taaron76 Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 Beautiful black finish. I really think the exhaust looks awesome.. Thanks Carl! I love a nice stainless steel looking exhaust. Tim
taaron76 Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 Finally got started on the engine today and got a few thing done. I'm still waiting on a couple of parts I ordered to come in. Pulleys, carb, oil filter and a few other things for the engine. Got some paint work done today and started some of the assembly. I've been using Maskol by Humbrol instead of taping up areas that might be sensitive to paint that hasn't cured all the way. I primed the engine pieces yesterday, painted them and assembled them today. Maskol really creates a great tape line without worrying about pulling up any of the paint. Here a few pics to show you what it looks like. Engine primed and the transmissions covered in Maskol with a paint brush. It takes about 10-15 minutes to dry: This is what it looks like after two coats of Chevy engine red acrylic. I peeled off the Maskol about 10 minutes after it was painted. Acrylics dry to the touch pretty fast, so that helps, but it peels off really easy and won't permanently stick : Maskol peeled off: After letting the Chevy engine red dry for another ten minutes or so (20 minutes total), I painted Maskol on the entire motor, except the transmission and painted it with Model Master Metalizer aluminum and sealer, then let it dry for 10 minutes or so and then peeled the Maskol off: A couple more pics of the separation lines using Maskol: Anyhow, if you hate trying to mask off the engine and transmission, or other similar parts while painting them, Maskol is very easy to use and very effective at creating a very nice and clean line. Tim
taaron76 Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 And here is the motor update pics for the day... I didn't use the box valve covers since the ones off of a '71 Chevelle were more like the stock'65 Chevelle valve coves. It already has the holes for the two vacuum or breather lines. Lots of work left to do on the engine, but I'm at a work stoppage until the parts I ordered get here. Tim
mustang1989 Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 The work on that motor looks good................and the photography equally as good!
microwheel Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Looking Really good Tim. Nice write up on the Maskol.
Stray Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 This is moving along rather well. Top notch work buddy.
Randy D Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Hi Tim, This is a wonderful build!!! Like Carl, I think the exhaust system looks terrific. Look forward to your engine detail work. Randy
taaron76 Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 Thanks fellas! I'm trying to get in what I can in the next few days... I will be out of pocket for two weeks with no modeling during that time. Is there a phone number you can call to get help? lol Oh well... lots of time to plan more I guess. Tim
