Mr Stock Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 (edited) Hey all Here is the latest from my workbench, its the old AMT 66 Mustang Hardtop kit. Now where do I start on this one well, I wanted to do a slump buster build and this kit fits the bill nicely for that as its very simplified, chassis has molded in detail, front axle through the sump pan and a very shallow detailed interior. you guys know what these old kits are like But hey it is what it is a kit where some of the parts originate back nearly 50 years !, I had great fun building it. I went for a close match to Wimbledon White with a Turquoise metallic "pony" interior package, Im not a fan of the 65/66 Mustang "pie dish" hubcaps so I used the styled steel wheels from the AMT Ford Fairlane GT kit, which were also available on 66 Mustangs. I didn't go overboard on engine detail no wiring etc as I wanted to keep it a fast simple and easy build. let me know your thoughts ....good or bad Oh and the hood doesn't fit too well....but ill live with it . bigdrag1 Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Great looking build Gary, super clean over all. I love it !!
Guest Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Very nice. One thing, the white walls are too wide. By the time of this year Mustang, the ww tires were narrow.
Snake45 Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Very, very nice work indeed! The old girl still builds into a fine model, as you prove. The only comment I'd make is that your whitewalls seem just a bit thick for 1966 or beyond (they look more like very early '60s), but other than that, it looks every inch the typical mid/late '60s daily driver Mustang.
TooOld Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Really nice looking Mustang , the white with a blue interior is sharp ! As are the wheels from the Fairlane GT . Even tho' it was slump buster and you didn't want to do a lot of extra work , I think you should've worked on the hood a little .

Thanks for the kind comments guys, I totally agree on the whitewalls now I look at it they are way too wide for 66 , I was tossing up between using these or a narrow whitewall, and I went with these....however these are just vinyl stick on so they can be peeled off and replaced with a narrow whitewall decal , Ill give it a try.

Thanks Bob....... believe it or not i did work a lot on that hood, it was warped to hell in the kit, I tried the hot water method and got most of the major twist out of it , but Im still not 100% happy with it. If I could find another hood, Id replace it, it does bug me Lol !
Mr Stock Posted June 1, 2015 Author Posted June 1, 2015 Ok ditched the wide whitewalls for now and back on standard tires....Im on the hunt for some narrow whitewall decals ....
DumpyDan Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Really nice build, but I like the wide whites, put them back. Very cool
Snake45 Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 It needs all the missing mirrors. I don't believe this kit has EVER had mirrors.
Harry P. Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 I don't believe this kit has EVER had mirrors. You can't let what a kit does or doesn't have stop you.
Stray Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Mirrors are just for people who want to see where they've been. Just keep looking forward! Nice clean build man. Hope it got you out of your slump.
Mr Stock Posted June 2, 2015 Author Posted June 2, 2015 You can't let what a kit does or doesn't have stop you. Very true Harry, but it would have defeated my object of a slumpbuster if I started detailing.....because I wouldnt know when to stop ! Interesting point though is there an aftermarket supplier for various mirrors etc ?
