Pete L. Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Fellas, I rescued an old AMT coupe "glue bomb" and tried to replicate an old fav from a magazine cover from "back in the day".
Pete L. Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 The body was molded in a high gloss black way back and it polished up really well. I painted wide whites on the ancient tires but I did use a newer issue engine and front axle.
Pete L. Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 Finally I created a chrome firewall like the one on the cover car. I also cobbled up a gas tank and a radiator.
Pete L. Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 (edited) Fellas, This is the product I used for masking both the whitewalls and the roof insert...it works like MAGIC MASKER. The WELDBOND is a white glue I've been using for decades, windshields, chrome trim, etc. Here it's utilized to glue the metal intake parts to the carbs. Edited June 15, 2015 by Pete L.
Pete L. Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 (edited) Here's the model and it's inspiration. MODEL CAR SCIENCE magazine cover, February 1964 ! Edited June 15, 2015 by Pete L.
Sixties Sam Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I built a bunch of those AMT Deuces back then, but they didn't look as good as yours! Very nice work! Sam
wayne swayze Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Super nice job! I see in the "before" photo, that familiar accumulation of dust on the engine from long ago. I'm sure a lot of us have models in our collections from years ago that share the same dust. Your old hot rod is just plain COOL!!
rmvw guy Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Very nice rescue, my type of build. I like the fact that you didn't even have t paint it to make it look this good. The white walls look just right also.
Draggon Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Wow, thats excellent! Great work, it sure looks just like the cover car. I dig this!
oldnslow Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Me too, I'm also building those, collecting parts, nice job.
Pete L. Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 (edited) Fellas, Thanks for the kind words...here's a few more pics. I used the stock tail lights and a steering wheel from AMT's 1940 coupe, the BARRIS Cruisin' series Ford was molded in black so I just clear coated the wheel and painted the spokes red. I also used the dropped chrome front axle from the 1940. I thought that it would be the only on available in chrome at that time. The dual master cylinders and voltage regulator (?) were both pirated from the '32 Vicky kit which was also available at the time, and glued to the firewall using the WELDBOND.
