roadhawg Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 One of the first Chevelle-bodied late models I remember from my teenage years at Athens (GA) Speedway was the 007 of local hero Rudy Burroughs. Rudy's parents owned a local restaurant and had deep pockets when it came to his racing habit. He was the big winner during the '72 season, and was looking to repeat in '73. Unfortunately, he lost his life in a non-racing incident before the season ever started. I've always wanted to build this one, so I finally gave it a shot. This is an AMT '65 Chevelle Modified Stocker kit that I converted to a '64 by using an old original AMY '64 hood and grill/bumper. The hardest part for me was getting it low enough...these kits sit pretty high, so there was a lot of "re-engineering" with springs and spring mounting points, and a bit of reworking the roll cage. I used as much of the kit as possible. The only extras are the tires and wheels (from my parts box), the aforementioned grill/bumper and hood, an aluminum air cleaner, and the wing, made from sheet styrene. Paint is Scalefinishes Lemonwood Yellow, decals are my own. Overall, I'm happy with it, and happy to add another to my Athens Speedway collection. Thanks for looking!
gardnerpag44 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Totally awesome build I really like it shows the kind of race cars I remember at local tracks Very Cool !!!!
Foxer Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I love these old "modern" body dirt trackers from my trips to the track way back when ... very cool looking build!
horsepower Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) Great build, I have a couple of Chevelle bodies I've set back to do models of the '64 & '65 bodied cars we ran in the early '70s at Shasta Speedway in Anderson CA. We had to use the '55-'57 Chevy chassis and small block engines, so I have one using the short track modified chassis, and one on the late version of the Pro Shop '57 from AMT.
