Kennyboy Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 (edited) This was a challenge build from a fellow member of a local club......."take the 1987 Camaro IROC promo and turn it into something." Was a $4.00 buy-in to get in on the challenge. Now the promo is really more of a toy with greatly undersized wheels and tires, and pretty much no detail whatsoever, not to mention mold lines and sinkmarks. Looking at the car I just wanted to build it like it should have been....something that would resemble an AUTOART diecast per se. I started by throwing away the wheels and tires and replacing them with Pegasus IROK's mounted on the tires from the Mustang Mach 3. (Gatorbacks would be correct for the IROC). GIANT thanks to Chief Joseph for the help with the decals (ABSOLUTELY TOP NOTCH DECALS!!!) The brakes were made with Corvette calipers from the Callaway Speedster kit, removed from the plastic rotors and mounted to chrome washers (spun on a drill and "machined" with a drill bit. BMF was used for all the masking for satin black (hoodscoops, headlight buckets, door handles, and the front fog light surrounds.) The color is True Blue pearl from HOK, cleared, wetsanded and handrubbed out. (Bob's paint and Kustom Khrome.) Getting close to done......interior is done but not in the pics. Need to paint the blue on the windshield top and then a little bit of black trim on the glass and it will be done. This build will be at the GTR show on August 2nd with the other fine builds on the table of this sows ear. Enjoy the pics of progress so far! Edited July 18, 2015 by Kennyboy
hgbben Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Great color choice and looking forward to seeing more.
Kennyboy Posted July 12, 2015 Author Posted July 12, 2015 Thank you Ben.....I thought you might like it.

kelson Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 (edited) Looks very nice!,i grew up in the 80's and remember these cars well!are you going to add side mirror's as well? Edited July 13, 2015 by kelson
Kennyboy Posted July 13, 2015 Author Posted July 13, 2015 Thank you Curtis! Yep, I have the mirrors from a trans am kit.
Olskoolrodder Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Looking forward to watching this one! Back in the day (1989-1994) I'd owned 2 IROC Z's,a 1987 5.0L (305cid)/5speed,and a genuine 1LE option code 1989 5.7L/auto (700R4),though I didn't know until after I'd sold it to a friend of the family that it was a specail/rare one (the 1LE),and didn't know what a "1LE" was until then either,LOL! Fun cars. The '87 was in that same shade of blue, bringing back cool memories seeing this
Jmaracing Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Very nice looking iroc. I had a white one in 1987 that got stolen. Good job so far!
Kennyboy Posted July 13, 2015 Author Posted July 13, 2015 Thank you so much guys! I really like that a build like this can bring you back to an earlier memory of a past car. Glad to help that along!
Snake45 Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Nice job on the tail panel. That thing is a bee-yotch to paint and get to look right/good, and you did a fine job with it.
kalbert Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Cool! The Pegasus wheels are kinda big, but way way better than the ones that came on it. Does this have the automatic console or the 5 speed?
W-31 Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Lookin alot more realistic! Back then my buddy had a 1LE and it was a cool car, didnt have AC or power anything. He learned the hard way that old muscle cars never die when I smoked him with my 1970 442!
Kennyboy Posted July 18, 2015 Author Posted July 18, 2015 Thank you guys for the support and comments....I really appreciate it! Ok, so all that is left now is to install the door mirrors (which will be pinned into the door tops so they don't inssit on falling off all the time.) Took some pics yesterday after work.....Enjoy!
peekay Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Looks fantastic! I have similar plans for the same promo and hope it turns out so nice.
Chief Joseph Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Beautiful job! It makes me want to finish up my 1/24 scale conversion set for the Monogram Z28. I've made all-new 16" wheels & Gatorbacks and fog lamps, and converted the kit's front fascia. Basically all I need to finish is the decal set. Maybe add a TPI setup, too.
Kennyboy Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 Thank you guys and thank you Joseph! Sounds like one heck of a conversion kit!! I'll be following that for sure!!

Any chance you can do the 88-90 Iroc wheels? don't believe they've ever been done.

I can do the 88-90 version wheel, but it would only be 16"-- I would never want an IROC-Z with the 15" wheels, LOL!
