Picked this old favorite up today. Guess I'm a sucker for the retro box art, decals and tires! I'm happy with it. Sort of a "what's in the box" for ya'll if your interested in this subject.

Nice to see a variety of license plates. I do wish they would do gauge decals tho. This is a very nice kit from back in the day.

another of my favorite kits, and favorite car... I've had three 1:1's, all 390-4v hardtops like this. Got one of these right now in powder/sky blue in the closet waiting for final assembly, a replica of my first '66.... here's a toothache story for ya: fellow I knew was selling a rolling body for a SEVEN LITRE (as depicted in the kit) for $350 when I was living in Lynchburg Va..... I was going to slip the 390-4v out of my daily driver '68 Galaxie in it..... but it got bought right out from under me, 1993...... even with a 390 that car would bring 10 grand easy today

I don't know how many people have heard it, but 1966 is the last year that Holman Moody supplied stock Galaxie bodies for NASCAR racing. They never used real stock bodies again. Using stock bodies was born from the requirement that any car raced had to be sold in the quantity of 500 units to the public.

From what I understand, when Ford went to using a Fairlane body for racing in 1967, it was a uni-body which was unacceptable for safety in racing. From there it evolved into tube frame bodies specifically made for racing.

That is what is interesting about this 1966 Galaxie kit as a NASCAR racer.

..thank you, Bob, for sharing that info with us. interesting, to say the least....anything with HOLMAN MOODY decals and equipment will always get interest,,,,stock car racing or at the strip...think i'll build mine as a vintage drag piece with the SOHC  motor....the Ace...:D

AC, should be an interesting drag car. Lots of good parts in this kit including that SOHC motor. This is one of the few AMT kits that appears to be unchanged from the first issue.

Only addition Round2 could have done was issue it as the convertible. Is the boot included in the kit?

I E-Mailed Round 2 awhile back about reissuing the convertible & they told me the mold was gone & it was not possible. darn shame it would sell like ice on a hot day

Not a big deal. Very easily puttied.

What I do need to ask them for is the spindles. Those went missing on me.

This one will be Emberglo in and out.

Unless they've seriously cleaned up the tooling for the Cammer engine, that thing is a real bear to get looking like it should. I spent probably an additional 15-20 hours just making it all fit right. If anyone builds that engine, report back and let us know if it's been fixed!

The head bases at the block are the issue iirc. Same issue on the cammer in the 68 Shelby too. Deck height with manifold and head for is the start point then fiddling top of heads and chain drive front cover fit. Original tool had the issues so doubt much change. I've built a lot of cammers as I'm stupid for them, put them in many mid 60's Fords.

I'd completely forgotten that issue, but once you get the geometry right once, the subsequent ones are easy. Elmers or small tack points let you see where issues are and you blow it apart. Manifolds needed angle changes and deck galley sanding as did head bottoms and chain cover back to snug stuff up.

Sorry for poor how to but I remember messing with it for awhile, and more copies fell together. Hth.

Looks nice Mike.

Thanks, you remembered the issues pretty well, I had to reshape both heads extensively, the top of the block, and the front cover match the reshaped heads. I still haven't figured out how to get the exhaust attached, the original attachment points got obliterated in the reshaping!

LOL. I drilled the mounts deeper. Probably best to get unmod head, or better yet, put motor in, and get exhaust where you want, then tack it and mark it, or the old paint on the header flanges once all lined up.

Those heads are far friendlier than they look. Waves everywhere :P. Drill exhaust mounts and flatten everything out. Dual plane manifold looks great but bear to fit under stock hood of a 65 Continental or 63 Park Lane convert.
