Matt Bacon Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Does anyone have one of these kits, and know what the additional detailing parts in white metal and etch that come with it actually are?bestest,M.
Greg Myers Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 WOW ! How did I ever miss this one? Cobraman?
afx Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) My understanding is that this is nothing more than a re-boxed Mongram kit with some parts in white metal. Edited September 8, 2015 by afx
cobraman Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I believe that to be true. Saw one and bid on ebay once but lost. Still need one for my collection.
Greg Myers Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 My understanding is that this is nothing more than a re-boxed Mongram kit with some parts in white metal. Aaaah. But what parts ? and PE ?
Mike Chernecki Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) Never seen this one before. I have seen a listing for a Fujimi Cobra, is this another variant of the Monogram kit? There is even a Hobby Design detail set for it,http://www.spotmodel.com/product_info.php?products_id=17845 , but I don't see any Cobra badges on the sheet. Edited September 8, 2015 by Mike Chernecki
Don Sikora II Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Fujimi's Cobra is their own tooling and not a reboxed Monogram kit.
Matt Bacon Posted September 8, 2015 Author Posted September 8, 2015 ...well, I bought it anyway, so I'll post up some pics of what you get when it arrives! Looking at the instructions on the ebay listing, there are some 47 white metal parts, including a complete engine, wheels, exhausts, brake disks, roll cage and assorted doo-dads that I can't figure out from the drawings. There are also photo etch parts for the jacking points (as Greg said) and seat belt hardware, plus a small sheet of fabric from which to cut the belts themselves. Not having the Monogram kit myself, I don't know how many of the white metal parts are replacements/duplicates of existing pieces, and especially whether the engine is new/different/better detailed than the plastic one....awaiting the post man.bestest,M.
peteski Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) It is not unusual for Japanese companies to take a plain kit and add some metal-cast, photoetched or resin parts and charge a top dollar for them. Gunze-Sangyo Ferraris are another example of this (although both curbside and detailed versions vwere Gunze's own kit). Those added cast metal parts are usually not very good quality (often plastic parts they replaced were better). Edited September 9, 2015 by peteski

cobraman Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Fujimi's Cobra is their own tooling and not a reboxed Monogram kit.Are we talking about the Monogram/Hasagawa Cobra or the Fujimi ones ? I have all 5 versions of the Fujimi kits if anyone needs photos. I do not have the Monogram/Hasagawa which I do believe is a reboxed Monogram with added metal parts.
peteski Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Judging by the logos on the photo of the Hasegawa box (in the initial post), it is the Monogram Cobra with some fancy metal bit added. Fujimi does indeed have their own tooling of the Cobra.
Matt Bacon Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 It's here now, and the metal looks very nicely detailed and cast -- it's certainly not just a copy of the Monogram plastic parts in metal. The engine in particular has some very crisp detail. I'll post some pics when I've opened up the bags -- I'll probably build up both engines for a compare and contrast. Anyone know how I can tell whether the engine is meant to be a real "side-oiler" 427 or the cheaper 428 that most of the S/C cars were fitted with? ;-)bestest,M.
