Matt Bacon Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) Could someone possibly post a simple guide to posting pictures in a thread in the new forum software? All I want is to be able to insert a picture hosted on the web, with a URL, embedded into a thread. Shouldn't be too hard, should it? After all, it was a breeze in the previous version of the Powerboard software.I can't copy and paste pictures, drag files or even hand type the BBcode tags around a cut and pasted URL. Nothing I try works. Invision should be ashamed of themselves. After all, it's not like some minor, barely relevant feature. There'll be no more WIPs or Under Glass from me until I can find a way to do it...bestest,M. Edited September 15, 2015 by Matt Bacon

Matt Bacon Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) 1-25830.JPG Nope... the above is what happens if I type the BBCode IMG tag, paste the URL, and type the close IMG tag... That's what I mean... bestest, M. Edited September 15, 2015 by Matt Bacon
Mike Kucaba Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Is this something new or can the URL just be copied and paste? I have a PB account and posting pics here has always been laborious and.....Well you know.
SfanGoch Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) Using the "Insert image from URL" option is a waste of time. It goes through the "Loading" without actually doing it. I just download images and attach them. Edited September 15, 2015 by SfanGoch
Matt Bacon Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 Yeah, but I don't really want to be cluttering up my desktop with loads of downloaded images, and more importantly, doing that means that all the images are being stored and served on the modelcarsmag forum server, using up storage and increasing the bandwidth needed (and the cost). Given that we all use some kind of image hosting service for our own pics, and the others are already on a server somewhere else where we have found them, it's an incredibly inefficient way of doing it. Me, I'd have put fixing "Insert image from URL" the absolute #1 priority; and I wouldn't have released an "upgrade" with it broken, either...bestest,M.
Greg Myers Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) yep this has been nothing but a nightmare since the "upgrade" . A picture's worth a thousand words, sorry, I can't post one. Edited September 15, 2015 by Greg Myers
afx Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Copy the image from your computer, internet or photo hosting site. I do this by right clicking on the image and select "copy". Then paste the image in the body of your post. Again I use the right click method and select "paste" Ta Da!
Matt Bacon Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) Nope, that doesn't work either... ;-( bestest, M. Edited September 15, 2015 by Matt Bacon
Matt Bacon Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) I've been trying typing those BBCode tags and not been able to get it to work reliably. Tags typed in around URL from "Copy Image Address" and "Paste" does this: 18_main_f.jpg Tags typed in around "Copy" and then "Paste and match style" OK... it looks like just "Paste" doesn't work, but "Paste and Match Style" stops it automatically becoming a link... How stupid is that...? bestest, M. Edited September 15, 2015 by Matt Bacon
Foxer Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 I really don't understand all these problems with posting photos. Maybe it's all these "easy" methods people are using rather than just copy/paste that has been with us since the DOS days. I haven't had a problem posting photos since I joined 6 years ago with any of the board software. Of course, I don't use Internet Explorer first of all. And use a FREE Photobucket account to put all photos on. Then it's just a COPY/PASTE of the needed IMG code direct from there to here. How could this be any simpler. Yes, I'm sure you'll all tell me a simpler way, but mine ALWAYS works ANYWHERE, this board or any other. oh well .. have fun
Matt Bacon Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) Copy/paste of BBCode Forum link from SmugMug hosting site: Great, but no control over sizes, just small, medium or large thumbnails., So no more 1000 pixel wide crisp pictures... bestest, M. Quick GMC Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 I've been ignored 4 times in a row so far, but I'll try again. Use Imgur.com. You can preset resolution before you upload, so they automatically resize as they are uploading, you can quick dump photos that you want to use 1 time without logging in, you can make albums, you can do anything you want. They have links for forums, email, etc. It's a simplified hosting site.
dodgefever Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) I don't see the problem, but then I always do it manually: type "[ img ]", paste URL, then type "[ img ]" (without spaces). Edited September 15, 2015 by dodgefever
Casey Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) Works fine using that url you posted, Matt. Not all image links can be hotlinked (i.e. copied from another site then reposted elsewhwere), so keep that in mind, too. Edited September 15, 2015 by Casey
Casey Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) First image below is posted using the BBC Large Code link from your album under Embeddable Links --> Forums: Click to copy The image below is the same link, only I removed the extra stuff which make the link go back to your album when someone clicks on the image. Shorten to the img on both ends, and done: Edited September 15, 2015 by Casey
Matt Bacon Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) Sooo.... It seems extremely temperamental about what copied URLs work. The upper picture is me grabbing the "original" from the "Direct Photo Links" on Smugmug, and typing the (IMG) tags around it. Which works for Smugmug, it seems. It does not work consistently for all other copy/pasted URLs (or even most of them). The lower picture is me doing what Casey suggested and using a pruned BBCode "Embedded - Forums" link from Smugmug on the large size. So, it looks like there's a workable solution for my own hosted photos at least: use the Smugmug "Direct - Original" link, and type the (IMG) tags around it. Still seems to be a lottery on pictures found around the web, though... especially since PhotoBucket doesn't seem to let you copy a link or download a picture without logging in to your own ID (which I don't have since I use SmugMug. As for using Imgur... well, I don't see why I should need to switch photo hosting services just to be able to post a picture on a specific forum.... ;-P Thanks so much for all the help, everyone! bestest, M. Casey Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 So, it looks like there's a workable solution for my own hosted photos at least: use the Smugmug "Direct - Original" link, and type the (IMG) tags around it.Why not just use the code for forums/boards that your image hoster provides, then copy it and paste it here? That's exactly what I did above, and exactly how you are supposed to use those particular links. There's nothing difficult nor tempermental about posting image links that way, and again, while ALL image links you find on the web are not guaranteed to be hotlink-able, most are.I'm an agreement with Mike's comment above. SmugMug, imagur, Photobucket, fotki-- all work properly for posting images here. Because, PEBKAC.
Matt Bacon Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 Why not just use the code for forums/boards that your image hoster provides, then copy it and paste it here?Because the embeddable forum links only come in three sizes: the bottom picture above is the largest one. I prefer to optimise my build and in progress pictures to 1000 pixels wide and 120K JPEGs in Photoshop as the best compromise between showing detail and keeping the page loading times reasonable. That's the upper image in my post above. There's no way to use the Smugmug embedded link to post a 1000 pixel wide picture, hence using the "Direct" links...bestest,M.
RAT-T Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 CAN I POST DIRECTLY FROM MY COMPUTER, IT SAYS IMAGE TYPE JPEG
Jon Haigwood Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) I find if I use the line marked "img" on PB it seems to work for me. On other sites I use the one marked "direct" but on here II just get a link posted and not the pic. Edited September 15, 2015 by Jon Haigwood
Casey Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 CAN I POST DIRECTLY FROM MY COMPUTER, IT SAYS IMAGE TYPE JPEG Yes, using the attachment feature, like so:
Casey Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 All I want is to be able to insert a picture hosted on the web, with a URL, embedded into a thread. I can't copy and paste pictures, drag files or even hand type the BBcode tags around a cut and pasted URL. Nothing I try works. Multiple people have posted images showing it is possible and it's works here on the forum. Because the embeddable forum links PROVIDED BY SMUGMUG only come in three sizes: the bottom picture above is the largest one. I prefer to optimise my build and in progress pictures to 1000 pixels wide and 120K JPEGs in Photoshop as the best compromise between showing detail and keeping the page loading times reasonable. That's the upper image in my post above. There's no way to use the Smugmug embedded link to post a 1000 pixel wide picture, hence using the "Direct" links... The second issue is you wanting to post the image hosted at Smugmug at 1000pixels wide, and Smugmug wouldn't allow that size image, i.e., it's "Large" image size is smaller than 1000 pixels. How is that the forum software's fault? Here's an image from my Photobucket account (posted using the IMG link) which is 1600+ pixels wide:
