curt raitz Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I used to work with Milt's brother Gerry about a 100 years ago. Ken Epsum had me build a bunch of models of vintage Trans Am cars about that time. I wanted to build a model of the Camaro Milt raced for Roy Woods aka "American Racing Associates". It is the same Camaro Mark Donhue raced in 1969 for Roger Penske. Milt's Camaro did quite well during the 1970 SCCA Trans Am Season. He finished 6th overall in the championship, winning the Donnybrooke race after tangling with George Folmer's Mustang. Finding photos of Milt's Camaro was challenging, did find a couple of Black and Whites of his car and a few color photos of Roy Woods Camaro. Sadly Milt passed away a few years ago. It seems lately I'm building a lot more tribute models, but with the main theme of next years NNL West being the "50th Anniversary of the SCCA Trans Am Series", I decided to build a model of Milt's Camaro. The base kit is the 1/24th Monogram Camaro Z28. Some extra parts to help, tires from Norm @ Replicas & Miniatures. Wheels from Forever Resins (eBay)
curt raitz Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 Got a few progress photos. The nice thing about this kit is it comes with a competition interior. The center console did have to be ground down. I back filled it with JB Weld and ground away at it once the JB Weld had set. Also scratch-built a roll cage using Mark Donohue's '69 Camaro as a guide.
Bernard Kron Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Nice subject. I always liked the clean simplicity of this era of cars. Truly "no stories" race cars that just looked like they would get the job done.I'm looking forward to seeing this take shape. I noticed the markings on the styrene rod to keep track of the orientation of the "fishmouths" on the ends. A trick I will remember. Now if I can just master making accurate bends in styrene rod...
Mike77 Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Nice project, but I think you posted it in the wrong section...unless you can mount a fifth wheel on the trunk lid.
Superpeterbilt Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Awesome work, but this is truck section.
curt raitz Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 (edited) Yeah, I figured out I put it in the wrong Thread after I first loaded it. Didn't know "Big Rigs" had it's own Workbench thread...just entered it in the first Workbench thread I saw I messaged HarryP to move it to the regular Workbench thread I work with "Big Rigs" all day...didn't separate work from pleasure... So that's a "no" on the fifth wheel thing?

Now if I can just master making accurate bends in styrene rod... thanx buddy Yeah I figured out one day how to mark the rods so i could have my "fish mouths" line up. just slid the side of a pencil down the rod...presto! and don't ask how I got this topic listed in the Big Rig Workbench thread, just talented I guess
curt raitz Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 So that's a "no" on the fifth wheel thing? I think a fifth wheel would slow down his camaro a wee bit, not that it wouldn't have the horsepower to handle it
swede70 Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Neat topic - nice work on the roll cage. I hope to see further progress. Mike K.
RancheroSteve Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 This is going to be very cool! I saw Milt win the Trans Am race at Lime Rock in '73 in a Porsche Carrera.
curt raitz Posted October 27, 2015 Author Posted October 27, 2015 (edited) Thank you HarryP for putting this thread under the correct topic. Got a little more done... Removed the stock fuel tank and replaced with a racing type fuel cell. Built a couple of exhaust headers from solder and aluminum tubing. also picked up a pre-drilled distributor from Replicas & miniatures. Interior, rollcage and firewall painted. Body painted. Used Tamiya TS-16 Yellow...seemed to be the closest I could find to the few color photos of the car that exist. Made a set of decals for the car. More to come, thanx for lookin' Edited October 27, 2015 by curt raitz
W-409 Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Looking very good so far! I like how that interior is coming together, it looks excellent so far. I'm just wondering why are you using that Monogram kit as the body is not really accurate on that (And even I can see that it's not correct !)? Is there a special reason for using that kit...? But I'm sure it will look good in any case once it's done. Keep it coming.
swede70 Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 (edited) If it helps, know that Fred Cady Design did a set for the ARA Can-Am (hence not 'Trans-Am') racer (think '70 and '71) that might yield some markings, whereas know too that the Camaro Research Group Trans Am subpage has a very good RWR/ARA thread that you've likely consulted already. Furthermore, it is my understanding that they used engine prepared by Al Bartz, hence colors used and the distinct oil fill cap might come into focus for pursuing information online so-identified. I'll try to plug in what I can below:Roy Wood's Racing/American Racing Associates threadGood luck...Mike K. Edited October 27, 2015 by swede70
slusher Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) Looking forward to more Curt. Edited October 28, 2015 by slusher

Thanx Well it was easy to use this kit...I've had it for 20+ years, it comes with a "gutted" interior and doesn't look too bad as "race car". It may not be perfect, but to quote John Teresi "it's good enough for the girls I run with!"

curt raitz Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 Thanx for the positive comments, picked up a set of Firestone "gold ring" tire decals from IndyCals. Tires/Wheels are finished. Front grill with light covers ready and engine close to being dropped in place. Made my own TransAm seat and resin cast a copy of it.
ProStreetOnTheStrip Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 One question, why did you mount the fuel cell with the filler underneath the car? that would be hard to fill! lol
curt raitz Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 One question, why did you mount the fuel cell with the filler underneath the car? that would be hard to fill! lol details, details...slipped right by me, thanxwill be fixing asap
curt raitz Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 Finished the interior, chassis, plumbed the engine a little bit more, put the decals, glass, and bare-metal foil on the body. almost ready to put it all together.
John Teresi Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Curt.........body ,paint and decals look great!!!!!
Bernard Kron Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I am totally digging this no-B.S. approach to modeling this no-B.S. racing car. And that's no B.S.!
