unclescott58 Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Not really so much "chain" restaurants, but some other good restaurants. There is a family in town by the name of "Zubay" that own about a dozen different restaurants ranging from 3 great burger joints called "Newts", to a bistro type place called "The Redwood room" & on the higher end, a steak house called "300 First" & our favorite, a seafood restaurant called "City Cafe". They all have excellent food & the Zubay's all but own the stand alone restaurant business in Rochester. The next time you're in Rochester, Check one of them out.Especially if you're looking for a great burger. Newts is terrific!!But plan on waiting to be seated at any of them on a Saturday night. They're all crazy busy! Steve Until about 10 years ago you guys still had a Shakeys Pizza in Rochester. Loved Shakeys Pizza. Grew up with one in my home town of Columbia Heights, a suburb of Minneapolis. But, it closed down in about 1980. In the 90's and early 2000's friends and I would make special trips from time to time, down to Rochester just to eat Shakeys Pizza. It may not have been the greatest pizza in the world. But, it was unique and we liked it. I miss Shakeys.
unclescott58 Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 We have Culvers here as well. No White Castles. I used to live in Chicago years ago and liked going to White Castles early in the morning. To be honest when I moved from Illinois to California ( to Arizona years later ) I was disappointed in the food and though Chicago food was much better. Pizza, hot dogs, beef sandwiches and beef and sausage combo sandwiches. Now I'm hungry !Unfair! You've got In and Out Burgers and Culvers too? Life is just not fair. We do have White Castles here in the Twin Cities at least. But, as much I like White Castle sliders, I'd rather have In and Out burgers. Good food and great t-shirts. In and Out is one of the best.
cobraman Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Many years ago I worked near 63 rd. and Pulaski in Chicago. A couple blocks down on Pulaski was the best place for a great hot dog. I am sure the place is long gone and the name escapes me but it was so good.
Bill J Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 In Arizona we have In and Out, Culver's, Five Guys and Steak and Shake. I prefer Five Guys over the others. I have a Culver's within a mile of my house but quit going there. I went a lot when they first opened but the price would go up each trip, for the same burger. I do not like mayonnaise or any facsimile on a hamburger and trying every trip to In and Out to have their salad dressing left off, they always smear it on anyway. I have not tried Steak and Shake, 15 or more miles away. I do like Five Guys, they put whatever you ask for on a freshly made burger and their meat is good. The fries are good to me but I can't eat that many, so seldom order any. I like White Castle but they are not in this area, unfortunately. Harold and Kumar cannot be wrong!

And your right Bill, they are very good. I guess we don't have it so bad after all.
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 I've been hoping for "Chic-fil-A in Rochester.I ate there a few times on trips down south.Best chicken sandwich on the planet, hands down!!

cobraman Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 We also have Smash Burger which is pretty good.
Bill J Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 We have plenty of choices here in the Phoenix area. The one place that I like most to eat in the world is only in Missouri,, Lambert's Café. If anyone has ever eaten there you'll know what I mean. They throw fresh rolls to you all the time and serve more than you could ever eat, with free seconds, food heaven!
ChrisBcritter Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Having spent 32 years in southern CA, I really miss El Pollo Loco more than In-N-Out Burger (burgers good, fries not much different from anyone else's). Even better were all the little mom-and-pop Mexican places we went to in Lincoln Heights (especially Los Tres Cochinitos on North Main).
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Even in Rochester Minnesota there are Mexican & Chinese restaurants on almost every corner! In a city of about 100,000 I'll bet there are 30 of them combined. Some good, some just fast. One of the Mexican places here that stands out is a taco truck called "Lucy's Tacos".Very authentic, cheap & quick! The best of all worlds. Steve
GLMFAA1 Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Just to tease you with some eastern USA culinary roadside delights, not drive-ins, but another lost part of Americanahttp://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2lhr8wIt's a little long, but will wet your appetite.greg

Philabertos, Pollobertos, Uncle Bertos, Robertos, Bobertos, El Bertos, ad nauseous.

My point was, Minnesota is a long way from the border, yet we have more Mexican restaurants than you can shake a stick at! Steve

Ace-Garageguy Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 (edited) Two of my old, long-gone favorites here were Lum's "world famous steamed in beer" hot dogs, and Ollie's Trolley...with the "don't need nuthin'" best burger in town, and wonderfully seasoned fries.Ain't progress grand? Shardik Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Great video; loved seeing all those late '40s cars. In Greeley, CO, there is a drive in burger joint called JB's. It has the same feel as this and, I suspect, hearkens from nearly the same era. Not to mention that on Saturday nights you'll see many of the same cars as shown here.
1930fordpickup Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Toledo OH was for years the leader in Restaurants per capita in the USA. We were also a test market for different options on a menu. Most have been through here at some point. I myself like a good bar burger and Burgers serve the best. One that taste good enough than you do not need a pile of stuff on it for taste. Elmers in downtown Toledo made some fantastic burgers but he retired and closed about 20 years ago. I think the Family owned restaurants have the best food for your money. The closest good drive up place around here is in Monroe MI , right on the River.
Nova-ss Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 wow...loved it.a little before my time..but not much..the cars..back when cars had character and class..and burgers..20 cents!!!...the good ole days....Chris
unclescott58 Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 It don't get no better than this : https://vimeo.com/110260174 Fun to watch. Again and again.
