There was story on the radio that a drone was hovering over a maximum security gaol today at goulburn in australia . The government is going to pass a new law that will make flying over a gaol illegal , duno how they gona inforce that when the whole gaol system is in tatters !

What is a Gaol, a prison?  We have had issues with that here, they have been using them to sneak contraban into the prisons here.

yeah mate a gaol is an aussie way of saying prison

You knew it was gonna happen!  People just cannot behave.

Some idiot almost ran a drone into a float in the Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City this year. They say airline pilots are reporting 100s of sightings a month,

Yup, in some ways, I blame the "More Money than Brains" portion of society, always seems like those are the types that cause excess insurance costs, additional legislation, and the like via their stupidity.  Since any R/C aircraft will fall under these rules (as well as some R/C trucks :p ) I wonder if that $5.00 is per airframe, or will cover the whole fleet?  I know guys who's basements and/or garages probably look like scale Smithsonians!

... They say airline pilots are reporting 100s of sightings a month,

I'm assuming these are low altitude sightings...landing and takeoff time...so when the inevitable happens and an airliner sucks one into an engine and crashes because of it, maybe we'll see some smartening-up.

The whole postulated post-war scenario of LOTS of people flying private aircraft never came to pass because most people simply can't do it safely, for whatever reasons (granted, it takes money to get a pilot's license, but it also takes training, self-discipline, and a functioning brain)...so now we have legions of clowns flying their little toys in restricted airspace and they have nothing to lose but the cost of the toy.

Registration is a good first step, but some mandatory education to go along with it is really necessary, and some teeth in a law that assigns financial responsibility to anyone causing damage, injury or death might be good too.

I'm certainly NOT a fan of more laws, but until it's possible to pass and enforce a blanket law that makes stupidity a criminal offense, it's going to be necessary to allow the lowest-common-denominators to force more restrictive rules on those who operate their RPVs with some common sense.

As usual, the morons spoil it for the rest.

What I don't understand is law enforcement talks about how drones interfere with fire fighting in California by causing the grounding of water drop planes.

I have a solution in my living room for a drone within eyesight.......called a shot gun!! They act as if drones are indestructible.....  when they are pretty fragile.

Just a few pellets from a shot gun shell brings them down.  Agreed hard to do in an area with lots of people.......but I will never understand why drones are looked at as bullet proof.

Dave,

The problem lies in the forces of gravity and local firearms laws. What goes up, must come down. While #7 1/2 shot won't matter much, if at all, a dead drone crashing down could cause "issues".

Combine that with your usual no "discharging of firearms" statutes, folks should think twice.

I for one, would prefer a garden hose................

Or a fire hose!!!!  But the issue is acting as if these drones are indefensible!!! When I watch KTLA and they are covering a fire in the rural mountains.....and a drone has caused a halt in air drops...... I could take care of it in minutes.....So IMHO a cop should be allowed and compelled to take out the drone in situations like this.......seems to be on the edge of sublime to me......

How many of those drones belong to the public, or to the news media? And why can't the pilots just drop their loads right on top of the drones and take them out?

Im sure they would if it were that simple. Damage from striking said drone is more llikely.

That's what I was thinking...don't want to hit one w/ a plane or suck one into an engine..

Yep, it seems that some airliners have lost engines due to just ingesting birds, let alone these drones. I have a friend that loves to fly his, but he goes to public parks that are far away from airports.

Turns out the Pilot is supposed to register with the  FAA, not the airframes, and the registration will be good for 3 years, so $5 for 3 years of legal flight with any plane in your fleet isn't bad.  Don't think I could do that in my home county, they require full AMA membership to have the privalege to buy a permit fly in a county owned field.

What's been bugging me - mass production of cheap quad-copters, and their marketing to every yahoo who has the wits to play a kazoo. Their sale from vendors who do not support the buyers with spare parts. And the mass media glomming onto the word "drone" to describe what are, in fact, quad-copters.

And no, I don't work at a hobby shop, but I hang out at the local one whenever possible. And I own a tiny quad-copter my wife bought for me, but I never fly it.

^^Yes. Finally someone said it. Quad copter are quite different than drones. Quad copter are the problem. Every 5 to 85 year old can go to the corner 7-11 and buy one for 25 bucks. The drones, those are a different story. The Hobby People ad came this week with the Christmas sales. There are a few drones on sale for 800 to 1500 dollars. I'm willin to guess the copters are the problem. I'm pretty sure the 25 dollar copters, way out number the 1000 dollar drone. But then again, what do I know.

The FAA rules are calling for registration of remotely-piloted-aircraft weighing between .55 pound (that's about 1/2 of one pound) and 50 pounds. I think you'll find most of the tiny quad-copters weigh less than .55 pound, and really can't possibly cause anyone any problem. But if you hit a 50 pound flying vehicle with an airplane in flight, you're going to know it, and it could down the airplane.

These aircraft hit birds. probably in the 10-15 pound range.

Funny thing... I was at an engineering conference last week and the main door prizes were in the $1000 range... a $1000 gift card,  an Apple basket of toys and a drone!
