iangilly Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I have both original 66&67 annual charger kits both unbuilt and 100% complete and the 66 did not have the clear hood but the slot car option. The 67 had the hood but no slot options. The street machine version that has just been rerealesed is based on the 1974 reissue that had no clear hood, or slot option. The street machine release has a mix of the 66&67 annual releases and the thunder charger from 1967.
unclescott58 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Check out Mr. Secules above posting for a link to Mr. Gulifoyle's great thread on the MPC '66 - '74 Chargers. It's well worth taking a second look at, and gives a great history to the origins of kit presently being reissued.Thank you Bill for posting the link. And thank you Ian for giving us a good look at the Chargers kits of MPC history. Great job guys.
Freeman Cars Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) I think i must have gotten a 1967 in 66 box. mystery solved Edited January 10, 2016 by Freeman Cars
unclescott58 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 By the way, it is a shame this kit can not be built stock. Though I have the Revell kit, I've always kind of liked the MPC kit better. I don't know why. But, I do.
Snake45 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I think i must have gotten a 1967 in 66 box. mystery solved Could be. The '67 kit had the little turn-signal thingies on the tops of the front fenders, and the pleats in the interior running the other way. That was about the only difference in the two kits (or for that matter in the real cars).

CapSat 6 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Thanks, Scott! By the way- two notes about this reissue: 1) it's more or less the same as the '80's Street Machine release, so it has '70's-'80's style modular wheels as well as a nice optional blower set up. They only added the American Racing wheels so that the contents would be the more or less the same as the '70's issue. 2) while it can't be built stock out of the box, all it would really take are: stock intake, carbs, and air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, exhaust pipes and wheels. Good period replacements can be found in any recent MPC '69 Charger (500 or Daytona), and better replacements could be pretty easily adapted from either AMT's '68 Road Runner / '69 GTX or Revell's '67 GTX/ Coronet/ Charger kits. If you want the hubcap style wheels, try Modelhaus has them, along with a '66 interior, if that's what you want.Back in the late '80's, I built one of the street machines stock, using the intake, exhaust & headers from the Charger 500, and the wheels from a Jo Han '69 Road Runner (which I think are the best representation of the '67-'68 style - without trim ring- Magnum 500 wheel ever done). I'll post some pics of that moldy oldy if I can dig it out.Personally, I really feel that the MPC kit has it all over the Revell kit by way of the body details. I think the Revell kit looks funny in the grille and it has a squashed appearence in the roof. The MPC looks perfect to my eye. I'm glad to see the MPC back. My ideal build would use MPC's body set up with Revell's chassis & engine, perhaps also using Revell's interior.
CapSat 6 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Here are some pics of what's in the box. Here are a few things I noticed: 1) I believe that the last several reissues did not include stock exhausts- just the rear axle molded with the exhausts blocked off. This new one has the stock exhaust pipes. 2) it looks like the Super Stock- style headers have been included as well. I think these were missing from the last few releases. IIRC, these were used as the stock, drag, and NASCAR exhaust headers in the original '66 and '67 annuals. 3) Mickey Thompson cheater slicks have been included, with 4 MPC polyglas GT's. The MT's were in the '70's issue that used this original box art, and the Polyglas tires are the type you typically saw in the mid-'70's MPC Impala kits, as well as all of the Dukes General Lee Chargers. These tires look right on a stock style build of this car. 4) All of the speed parts from the '74 issue, as well as the parts from the '80's issue are included. This is really a nice array of vintage speed parts that could be used on many other builds: blower, side pipes, headers with separate collectors and gaskets, traction bars, etc.
stavanzer Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 Thanks for the photos, Bill!Got any pics of the Tyres abd Decal Sheet? Looks like I can get on of these when it shows up here in town.
Mr mopar Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Yes a tire photo would be nice......... I to have always like this kit , moulded in white Awesome !
unclescott58 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 So, other than wheels and headers this kit can be built basically stock? Since they give you 4 polyglas tires, besides the M/Ts, can this kit be built to ride at a somewhat stock level? In other words, not too jacked up it the rear?

In other words, not too jacked up it the rear?I think you've always been able to build the kit at a stock height. If you want a stock look without the expense of aftermarket wheel covers, I believe that common Motor Wheel Magnum 500s were optionally available in '67. Meanwhile, I'd like to know if the body still has all the annoying dimples and depressions (which require filling) of the '80s reissues?
gtx6970 Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 (edited) I believe that common Motor Wheel Magnum 500s were optionally available in '67. Correct, the 66 and 67 Base chargers had the exact same wheelcovers. Then the all chrome magnum 500 5 spoke road wheels were optional , beginning in 1967 ( they had no trim ring ) Edited January 12, 2016 by gtx6970

Snake45 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Thanks for the pix. So the body still has those fugly sink marks, though these don't look quite as bad as the '80s repop I'm working on now. Gor, those things were a mess to fill.
Mr mopar Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Looking at the tire photo ,I thought they are pad stamped ! I guess not that's a downer.
CapSat 6 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Yup- not pad stamped, but the slicks are nice, at least. I have about 100 sets of the others, nice to get something different. The sinks don't seem nearly as bad as the last 80's body (in black) that I looked over. The new decals are pretty sweet. There was a fella I read about in Mopar Collector's Guide a few years back that did up his 1:1 '67 to mimic these decals. Turned out pretty nice from what I remember.
stavanzer Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 Thanks, for the Photo's, Cap'n.. The tyres could at least have been pad-printed. I really like the M/T Cheaters, however. Wish Round2 would sell those in an 8 pack. DEcals look OK to me, but Kinda 'meh' compared to some of the other Retro Deluxe kits. Looks like this was the work of the "B" team.......Not a bad kit at all, but Round2 will want the same price for this one, as the Home Run Deora kit. This "un-eveness" in consistancy drives me Bonkers. 4 new Rims, and some period sponsor decals and a few black stripes, don't live up to the billing, at least to me. I don't mind there being 2 'levels' of retro kits. Just be straight about how much, (or how little) we are really getting when we shell out $25.00 now for 35-45 year old tooling. And price accordingly. The Deora Kit is rightly worth $25.00. The Charger, not so much. It is a good $20.00 kit. A bit of a let down as a $25.00 one.
Rob Hall Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Actually, it's $2 less than the Deora on the usual sites...
Robberbaron Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 MPC’s Great Street Machines are back! This series of muscular customs was first introduced during the 1970s and featured big motors, gleaming wheels and detail galore. Now, the first to be resurrected is the ’67 Dodge Charger... Notice that Round 2 is indicating that there will be additional reissues from "The Great Street Machines" series. The only other ones I'm seeing show up in a Google image search are the following:
Phirewriter Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I'd welcome all of these back. Had all of them when I was young. I have still have the remains, plus parts to rebuild them. I would buy these just for the decals and nostalgic box art. I'm happy to add the Charger to the Mopar shelf for now.

Anyway, who's betting on which of these will be the next reissue? Kind of interesting that all these other kits are Corvettes. I'm kind of partial to the '67 Streaker Vette - seems like it had a nice set of big and little slot mags. The intriguing thing about the '57 Corvette gasser is the set of 6-slot American Dragmasters it had, even though the rears appear to be almost cartoonishly deep. Nevertheless, there's no other currently available kit with a set of those wheels. Something tells me they probably won't be reissuing that Street Shark Vette - a bit too Covette Summer-ish.. Phirewriter Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Something tells me they probably won't be reissuing that Street Shark Vette - a bit too Covette Summer-ish..In this version it does, with a bit of work and a wheel change it can look closer to the Mako Shark it's based on. I don't remember if this version has the rather tall scoop molded to the hood. Mine is missing more than a few parts including the hood. In the early 80's blue version it's missing the hood scoop and has not very attractive turbine wheels. Would be nice if we could get this version and perhaps a restored Mako Shark.
mk11 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Are those vette wheels available anywhere else? Look like what you'd need to build a decent 'Lawman' '70 Boss 429 car. mike
