1972coronet Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Does that issue have the T-N-T 440 air cleaner / pie tin ? I can't remember if that was originally included in the Jo-Han kit , or if some-one's making resin "pops" ...
Dann Tier Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 How about some input guys. I'm planning on the "Spanish Red" for the body. What does everyone think about a white top? Yes, or no. I'm not a vinyl top guy, & most of the '66 Chryslers that I'm seeing with contrasting tops are vinyl, although I am seeing some with painted tops as well. I was originally leaning towards doing a white top, but am starting to re-think that option. Steve How'bout a Mod Top?! -Just kidding! -Always love seeing your work. cant wait to see this one too!

StevenGuthmiller Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 Got a little color on the '66 tonight. 4 coats of Duplicolor primer, 2 coats of Duplicolor "Bordeaux Red" as a base & one coat of MCW "Spanish Red". I'll foil the small chrome parts like door locks & small scripts & then one more coat of Spanish Red. Then I'll be ready for clear coats. I think I like this color. Steve
om617 Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Really pretty shade of red,is going to look sweet with clear on it. I thought spanish red was like Ferrari red, assumptions are useless.

Dann Tier Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Looking VERY cool!!, What color are you using for the interior?
StevenGuthmiller Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 Thanks guys!I'm usually not real big on these darker metallic reds, but during the research process, this was the color that stuck out to me on the '66 300. Looking VERY cool!!, What color are you using for the interior? The interior will be black & white Dann. Steve

peekay Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I just remembered that Juha Airio from Finland once did a magazine article where he did the same car in the same colour. I'm 100% sure yours will be just as beautiful.
Mopar - D Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Steve just found your post and I'm also a fan of the 300's. Your colors are really going to make the 66 look sharpe. Looking forward to seeing more.
bisc63 Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 That is a nice dark red. If I were doing one for myself, it'd be triple red: red vinyl top, red leather interior, and red paint. Looking forward to yours for now!

Looking forward to yours for now! Thanks Rusty! I started doing clear coats today & I'm a little disappointed. For some reason the clear has changed the color a bit. I know that clear coats have a tendency to "brighten" the colors a bit, but in this case I'm not crazy about the results. The color started out as more of a "russet" red, but after clear coating it's looking much more "candy" red. It doesn't look bad, just not the shade I was hoping for. Oh well, onward! Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 I had one of those "life flashing before my eyes" moments last night. I finished up polishing over the weekend, & got a start on the foiling process. At one point my dried up fingers lost grip on the shiny paint & to the floor she went! Luckily I have a large area rug in my shop, so the "shatter" that would have happened on my cement basement floor was averted. I thought I heard a small crack when it hit but I quickly picked it up an inspected it. I could find no damage on initial inspection, so I went back to foiling. As I was finishing up for the night & was giving the body a light rub down to eliminate finger prints & the like, I could hear a faint plastic on plastic grinding as I was polishing the top. To my chagrin, I found that the passenger side A-pillar had snapped! After I got over the initial anguish & the sinking feeling in my chest, I realized that it wasn't too bad. Or let's say, it could have been much worse. The break is clean with no paint chipping so I quickly pulled out the "Zap" & glued it back together. Even more disturbing was when I began to contemplate some reinforcement on the pillar & pulled out the glass to decide how much space I had to work with, I discovered that my windshield had a bunch of fine "stress cracks" on one corner that I hadn't noticed before. Needless to say, '66 Chrysler windshields do not grow on trees, so I'll have to learn to live with it. I guess I averted a real catastrophe & in the end the build can continue, but I thought it would be good therapy to share my harrowing experience! Steve

Swifster Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Steve, I just found this thread. I love the 300's. My second car was a '67 300 in the red with a white interior and a white vinyl top. I loved that car. Will be watching to how this comes out.

My first car was a '67 Chrysler 300, red with a black interior & black vinyl top! I bought it at a junk yard for $200.00 & then fixed it up during my junior & senior years in high school. I have a Johan '67 that I'll be building in the future that will be a replica. Steve
charlie8575 Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Making a vacuum-former is pretty easy.Get a project box from an electrical supplier (or, if you still have a Radio Shack nearby, they can order you one.) Glue everything together with silicone. Don't block the perforated top. Put a shop-vac in the other side of the box and silicone around it to promote a tight seal.Silicone pieces of balsa together and then a piece of thin plastic sheet from the hobby shop onto the wooden frame.Set your oven to as low as it'll go and with the door open, set the plastic on frame onto the top rack. Turn on your vacuum and place the old glass unit on it. When the plastic bows, remove it immediately and place it over the project box and master- work fast. Let vacuum do its magic.Set it aside for about half an hour to cool. If you're not happy, re-heat and try again.Charlie Larkin
