Oldmodelmaker Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 There is a fruit booth on Interstate 15 south just before Barstow as your coming in.
1972coronet Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Who is Cathy McGowan?Presenter for the British T.V. programme Ready ! Steady ! Go ! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy_McGowan_(presenter)That lyric is from Generation X's (Billy Idol's first band) Ready , Steady , Go !
1972coronet Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Back in 2009 , the will-remain-nameless auto parts store I work for "accidentally" received a case of "49 State" carburetor cleaner , and a case of "49 State" brake cleaner . I swooped those 2 cases up so fast ! Couldn't buy 'em fast enough ! Ha ha ha . Next day an email was sent out ; its message was to the effect of : ATTN : Southern California Stores : a mistake was made at the warehouses and "banned" cleaners [ part numbers 'x' and 'y' ] were sent to the following stores ____________________ . Please remove them from your inventory and send them back to the [ distribution centre ] ASAP ."Too late !! Ha ha ha !!
Crazy Ed Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 (edited) I'm waiting for the Ultimate Prop 65 Warning Label. It'll be on Birth Certificates, and it'll state "Live Birth is known to Always result in Death". Edited March 10, 2016 by Crazy Ed
Pete J. Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I don't know if they still exist, but they used to have booths at the entrance to the state to make sure you didn't carry fruit in or out. Pretty soon there will be guards there checking for things like thinner and paint. Couldn't pay me enough to move there. Russ For those who live here, no explanation is necessary. For those who don't, no explanation is sufficient.
Rodent Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 For those who live here, no explanation is necessary. For those who don't, no explanation is sufficient. Yeah. Pretty much true about the explanation. I will attempt to explain the fruit thing though. It's not the fruit, live plants, or bouquet of flowers that they care about. It is the little critters that may be hitchhiking along with them that we don't want here. Agriculture is too important here to introduce yet another non-native pest to destroy citrus, almonds, grape vines, etc. I once had a chat at a SoCal hotel with a chap from Vancouver. As he was walking down the ramp in the (international) airport, an officer barked at him to stop. He finally figured out that the apple he was eating was the problem and the officer was pointing for him to put it in the trash. Guy was internally panicking because he had a small quantity of another "agricultural product" in his pocket.
Oldmodelmaker Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I don't know about other states but there is even the Prop 65 warning label on cars bought new. And it's crazy how many people never take them off the window after they bought them. I see hundreds of people driving around with those stickers on the drivers window. Really?!
aurfalien Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 (edited) You forgot to mention mudslides. They make house moving easier. You have to have rain and fires for that. Not much of either as of late. Edited March 10, 2016 by aurfalien
PeeBee Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 What it is it about the consumption of lacquer thinner and 2x4s that appeals to pregnant women? Pickles with ice cream and that kind of stuff is one thing, but paint thinner and wood is a new one on me...
Pete J. Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Dave, I still have two cans of pre-VOC lacquer thinner. One is down to less than a quart and is the old DuPont stuff. I guard it and use it sparingly just because. The other is a can of HOK that is unopened. These have to last me the rest of my life. I still cringe at the thought of the five gallon can of the good DuPont stuff I blew through the airbrush as cleaner. Here is the label from the DuPont can if it helps at all. I am a little surprised that the first ingredient is alcohol.
Lownslow Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Considering where you are take a trip to National City and find a paint supply if youre good at it you can get them to sell you a 5 gallon of the non compliant stuff
Art Anderson Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Hmmm, I wonder what aircraft restorers who are re-covering a vintage, historic fabric covered airplane use in California? Last I looked, good old-fashioned "dope" is a preferred material for shrinking linen, even nylon or rayon covering--and that stuff is thinned with--you guessed it,ACETONE based dope thinner!Art

I despise those stupid stickers !!! It's like those infamous "DO NOT REMOVE !" tags on cushions ...... but much more irritating . The best is when some-one adds tint film over that dumb sticker !! When-ever I get hold of a new vehicle (typically a work vehicle) that sticker is the first thing to hit the trash .
fumi Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 There's a CA proposition that required labeling everything that might cause cancer of birth defects. Most everything except food carries that "Prop. 65" warning. Last time we visit LA all restaurant menus warned us tuna is known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.
russosborne Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 This is an attempt at humor. PROP 66 - Living in the state of California has been known to cause brain damage. Especially to those who run things. Get away from there as soon as possible. Russ

This is, of course, ridiculous. Acetone is every bit a VOC. But, angering half the state and hundreds of thousands of nail salons is not something even a bureaucracy that implacable could withstand.
1972coronet Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 (edited) C.A.R.B. (an ironic acronym for sure) is an antiquated agency ; and its chief architect is a hypocrite of the imperial order (Mary Nichols) . Where was C.A.R.B. when Porter Ranch was in turmoil ?? Where was The Great Bald Wizard (Jerry Brown) ?? Oh , that's right -- his sister just so happens to be an integral part of Sempre Energy (read: So Cal Gas Company !!) , thereby making her untouchable .C.A.R.B , S.C.A.Q.M.D. , and the other fledgling air resources board districts , all need to be disbanded and "reimagined" . Period . Edited March 11, 2016 by 1972coronet
Oldmodelmaker Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 (edited) Acetone is considered a "low-reactive" organic compound and is exempted by the US EPA. Even by CARB. Edited March 11, 2016 by Oldmodelmaker
Pete J. Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Acetone is considered a "low-reactive" organic compound and is exempted by the US EPA. Even by CARB.Ok, so alcohol and acetone with a little MEK thrown in is lacquer thinner. Why is that ban? I don't get it.
Oldmodelmaker Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 The vapor pressure for MEK is 91 mm/hg@25deg C. When that is added into the mix, it pushes the VOC limit above 25 g/L which is the limit for paint thinner.
robertw Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 I've always assumed that some day the greenie crowd will get lacquer thinner banned so always keep several years worth of the stuff stored in an outside shed. As modellers we don't use a lot of the stuff in a year so I figure I've got enough to last me the rest of my modelling life.

I am a little surprised that the first ingredient is alcohol. No wonder I have COPD ! I know I was NEVER careful with these Thinners as I painted cars for Earl Schieb and later I owned a Silk screen shop where I never even bothered with even a Paper respirator. I believe I can get the thinners you still need via a Dupont distributor I know . If anyone needs my office phone or address , just P-M me
Quick GMC Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 I was told that Acetone is an unregulated solvent and is the primary part of lacquer thinners in CA. I had to go WAY out of my way to find a non-acetone, slow thinner in CA and it cost me $40 for a gallon. The Klean Strip brand lacquer thinner from Home Depot is pretty potent, if that's not working for you, then you have other problems.
