Hobby Paint alternative to Street Hemi Orange Engine paint?

Hi,

Does anyone know of a hobby paint(Testors, Tamiya...) alternative to Street Hemi Orange engine paint?

I need to paint a Chrysler 440 and would rather use a hobby paint(preferably acrylic) to paint the block.

Is Testors Model Master International Orange a good match?

I've painted a few with International Orange...to me it's a "close enough" match. I've also heard people using the Testors Rattle-Can Hemi Orange lacquer. It's metallic, but apparently it's not that noticeable if you don't clear it.

Model Master offers Hemi Orange in their Custom Lacquer line. I think it may give you the color you're looking for.

I've painted Mopar engines with common Testor "little bottle" orange. Might not be 100% accurate but I'm not building for contests.

I just use duplicolor Hemi orange. I actually use duplicolor for all my engine paints

And mopar performace for the earlier Race hemi orange builds.( its lighter orange )

 

spray either one over a good primer and never had a problem in nearly 10 years

I use either the Testors international orange or Duplicolor chevy orange. As Snake and Colby said, its close enough for a shelf model. I do wonder why Testors doesn't sell Hemi orange considering the number of Mopar models with Hemis, 440's, 383's, and 340's. They do have Chrysler blue and red, Ford blue, and I believe Oldsmobile blue, why not Hemi orange?

They also have Ford Red and Pontiac Blue.

The Olds Engine Blue is my favorite go-to for many '60s medium metallic blues, such as Chevy Marina Blue. Great stuff to work with! The Pontiac Engine Blue is a great generic light metallic blue.

I bet an enterprising aftermarket company could sell custom mixed engine paints for models and make tens of dollars. They might even break even if they got some distribution deals with some of the internet dealers.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I've used the "real" engine paints on model engines. They work fine over a primer, but always seem to look too thick and too glossy to me, even when I apply them carefully in several mist coats, not a wet coat. Still, the rattlecan convenience is very attractive.

Don't tell anybody, but I use MM "Chevy Engine Red". I know it's sacrilege, but it matches the air cleaner decals almost perfectly.

I also wonder why Testors  never  made Hemi orange bottle paint but you can get real Hemi engine paint from Scale finishes .

I to use International Orange for my Mopars  just remember on six pack Hemi oval air cleaners are a slightly different orange .

Testors Hugger Orange looks pretty close to me.

I'm doing a Datsun pickup in it right now.

Just as an FYI, Testors hemi orange is for exterior body color. NOT engine color ( and yes they are very different )
