bbowser Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Is the largest steam locomotive ever built any match for a string of modern diesel-electrics? No, but if you've never seen a big steam engine go charging past you at full tilt, you just don't know the real definition of "machine". That's what I'm talking about! No match, no contest, either way. I think "the hobby" will be fine. In the past, kids built models of buckboards and Conestoga wagons, we are all about Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. In the future it'll be spaceships, solar stations, and monorails.

But I've built a few space stations. And I've never seen a model of a monorail. But that sounds cool too. I guess I'm ready for the future of modeling.
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 ...And I've never seen a model of a monorail... They're out there. http://www.monorails.org/tMspages/Models.html
Harry P. Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 In the past, kids built models of buckboards and Conestoga wagons... In the past? Heck, I still do!
unclescott58 Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 They're out there. http://www.monorails.org/tMspages/Models.html Very cool! Just added a bookmark to the page to go back and take a closer look. I especially like the looks of the Disney monorails, like the one above.
Rob Hall Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Monorails are cool. Remember the monorail episode of The Simpsons?
bbowser Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 In the past? Heck, I still do! I thought that might get a response from you Harry . I tried a couple of those balsa wood kits back in the '60s when I was still a kid but never finished one. Those are awesome BTW.
Harry P. Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Actually they're basswood and very thin plywood, not balsa.
bismarck Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 (edited) I'm a "younger guy" as I'm coming up on my 29th birthday... This forum is definitely really welcoming and you guys seem to put up well with my Japanese builds (even though I deleted my under glass posts because I was cluttering the server with my direct picture posts - working on this issue now that I have a host site)... But you guys seem to be nice about my habit of slamming cars with big wheels and "stretched" tires and I think while you're right that 80-90 percent of this hobby is made up of the older dudes (and some gals)...there are quite of few younger peeps out there. I have an instagram just for building my models (for those who don't know it's an application on your phone that takes social media to posting and sharing pictures ONLY) -> and there are plenty of younger kids on there pushing amazing models and great creativity, they're just too young for the whole "forums" and "swap meets" lifestyle because they didn't grow into it. There is nothing wrong with tuners that i see. I like some of the Japanese tuners. They look pretty cool. Just about the only car style i can't really find anything to like about is the "Donk". I hope that fad goes away quietly..... I love all the older cars, but i can still appreciate a well build modern one too. Edited April 13, 2016 by bismarck
Belugawrx Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Wow!! , I find that extremely, beautifully well done, Harry !?! That is gorgeous... Anyway, back to topic,...what was it,..Oh yeah,... We're getting old

Lizard Racing Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 Gee guys, I didn't mean to kick over a hornet's nest.I certainly don't say that anything is good or bad, just because it's old. I'm a museum piece myself. We need to encourage the younger generation(s) to at least try our hobby to see how challenging and rewarding it is. My grandson is entering his first local contest with his first model this Saturday. My other grandson builds models from the thrift store (I can't seem to find any at mine). Our hobby may change some with passing generations, as most things do. But if we keep the flame of enthusiasm alive, we will be OK.
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Things run in cycles. What fell out of coolness can easily become cool and hip and happening again. Just look at the resurgence in vinyl record sales and who's buying them. It's not mostly locked-in-the-past () old audiophiles like me anymore... Why millennials are buying more vinyl records http://www.cnbc.com/2015/11/06/why-millennials-are-buying-more-vinyl-records.html
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) ... I don't know what solar stations are? ... Very interesting what comes up when you google "solar station". I could sure live happily in this world... Edited April 14, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
keyser Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Very interesting what comes up when you google "solar station". I could sure live happily in this world... That's because there's no lawn, Bill
russosborne Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) guy on kijiji has one for sale for $40 Any idea on what scale this is? It's interesting for sure. I wouldn't mind building it. But being an old f@#t I don't know that site it is on that you are talking about. Russ Edited April 14, 2016 by russosborne
russosborne Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Oh, and as far as a site where criticism isn't allowed, look at our own On the Workbench."Rules for On The WorkbenchFor those viewing others who are presenting their works in progress in this section of the forum, please keep your criticisms, sarcasms, and other comments to yourself, unless the builder/poster has specifically asked for such replies."Guess it isn't only the youth who don't like criticism.Russ

russosborne Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Thanks! Will have to pass on it for now, after last weekend I can't spend any more on models for a bit.But it is something I will definitely be looking into later on. My wife would like it, her dad built model trains, both static and electric.Russ
