LVZ2881 Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Anyone built this?if so, how was it, and have any built pics?
JustJake Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) I haven't built mine as of yet, but I had a while back removed the molded in hood, and cleaned up a little of the flash on front grill/bumper, still some flash on rear bumper and dash. I test fitted a chassis from the most recent lindberg '66 chevelle, fits very good, a little snug, would need just the tiniest amount of adjusting. The front of the underside of the hood would need some attention if displayed open and not pictured are the two hood scoops that are seperate small resin castings, Hope this helps. Snake45 Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 When this was announced, I was pretty excited, because I always wanted a model of this car, and their prices aren't bad at all. When SC posted pics of the parts, I took a good look at them and decided some of the details were a little funky/crude and it would take too much time (and possibly exceed my skill level) to rework things to my standards (which are actually pretty low). (I once bought somebody's resin '65 4-4-2, which was the same way but about 10 or 20 times worse. I eventually traded if off for almost what I had into it.) It's possible that the pics on SC's site are of early/prototype parts and they've improved things by now. Also, they evidently started with an original AMT '66, which has a wonky body line on the left side (the right side is okay) that needs correcting. Fortunately this isn't difficult to do, you just need to notice that it needs to be done. I think this thread on my '66 rebuild shows the problem and solution:
sfhess Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 The proprietor of Speed City goes to great lengths to make sure the products he creates are correct. I have one of these bodies and it looks fantastic. Look at his website and see what he has done to make a correct altered-wheelbase 65 GTO hardtop. We are hoping he makes a stock body 65 GTO based on what he has done.
LVZ2881 Posted April 14, 2016 Author Posted April 14, 2016 Thanks for the info. I think I will pull the trigger on this
Snake45 Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Thanks for the info. I think I will pull the trigger on this Good luck and post lots of pics when you build. I'm very interested in seeing what one looks like finished!
JustJake Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Sorry I had a doctors appointment, How about some more pictures?
LVZ2881 Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 I have mine on order now. Jake, have you figured out which kit your using for a donor?and what about an engine. I haven't done any research yet to see what it should have.
Modlguy Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Saw it at NNL East and decided I wanted it. But I also decided to spend my available cash at vendors that don't have a website. When I got home I ordered it off of SC's site. Engine would be the G/S 400 with an air pump on top that can be sourced from the '68 Riv kit.
JustJake Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 (edited) LVZ2881, Sorry been busy, for most of the chassis etc.. I am going to use '66 Lindberg chevelle, engine is coming from the re pop of the '66 Buick modified stocker, It's a 425 ci, i believe, wheels and tires will be from PPP. my inspiration for my build is J D McDuffie's .... Edited April 18, 2016 by JustJake correcting super stocker to modified stocker
LVZ2881 Posted April 23, 2016 Author Posted April 23, 2016 Thanks again for all the info!!I ordered the kit. I'll pick up a Lindberg Chevelle and AMT Riv for the engine
Snake45 Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Engine from the AMT '66 Skylark modified stocker, or AMT '66 Riviera (or the '65 Riv or the '66 Wildcat), would be wrong for a '67, the first year of Buick's "new" engine. Right engine would be found in the AMT '69 Riviera, which fortunately isn't too hard to find.
MrBuick Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Just placed the order for my Skylark...got a '65 Chevelle chassis and interior bucket from eBay for $6. Now I just need to source an engine, and decide what I want to do for wheels. Stock Buick Rally's, maybe some Crager Keystone's or Super Sports, what do you think?
High octane Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I have bought parts from Speed City Resin and they look great. We also have a club member who highly recommends Speed City Resin as well. The only thing keepin' me from buyin' resin kits from them is the same as Modelhaus, I have enough plastic & resin to build already.

Factory stock or "Day Two" or what? Buick offered Chevy Rally Wheels with '67-style caps (with Buick emblems, of course) on the '67 GS340s. Not sure if they were available on GS400 or not, but that would be another option. The ones I've seen were painted red to match the stripes and trim on the 340.

Well, I wouldn't mind doing the stock Rally's but I don't know if I really want to unless I can find some Buick decals for the center cap. As of now I'm thinking of doing something like this.
charlie8575 Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 No interior? The '66-'67 interior are very different. I would suggest using one of the platform-style recent-issue A-body interiors, and custom-fabricating the door panels. The '66 dash is close enough. The seats can be puttied and scribed for correct upholstery patterns. Engine: the '69 Riv will provide the correct engine for a 400. I'd have to double-check if the TH400 was available, or if it was the Super Turbine 300, as with the smaller engines. There's no 300/340/350 Buick available that I can think of, although, if you wanted to, you could probably cobble up something very close with a Jo-Han Buick 215, which shared a lot of its design with the small-block Buicks, and, from what I've seen, are about the same size externally. Want to do something totally different? Dig up an MPC Jeepster Commando and make a standard V6 Skylark coupe. Yes, you could get buckets in it.Charlie Larkin
